First we can start with dispelling some myths:
1) Working from home means more money.
=> Not in the beginning. Unless your work is immune to the recession you will find that starting a work from home job is a cost saving tactic by the employer. (Zero coffee and milk costs.)
2) You have all the time in the world to do whatever you want.
=> If there was ever a myth, it's this one. When I took up Day trading I found out that 12pm rushes towards you and before you knew it it was 4pm and every body was coming home and they want to spend time with you because they think you did nothing all day but sit around.
=> Besides employers will typically give you extra work and unrealistic deadlines just cause they think you are loafing around. Good luck getting that grocery shopping done and taking out the trash.
3) You can spend time with your family.
=> Unless you home school...you will never see your kids. Believe me that between the text messaging the video games, and Lord forbid school you will see them just as much as you did when you worked away from home. Yes it gets worse, you will be the one feeling the neglect.
4) You can run your errands.
=> Go back two points and re-read myth number 2. Errands- They get in the way of your progress.
5) You will always have the connection to your work.
=> Have you met ISPs ? They are the companies that provide you with the internet and boy do they have problems. One day they are slow (not as slow as Dial up- Thank goodness, but slow enough) and you need to work fast to meet your deadline.
=> In South Africa we have rolling blackouts and because the governement thinks that you should be at work in your cubicle like a good little boy or girl they will prioritise keeping the lights on in the industrial or commercial areas and switch of residential electricity. Good luck getting through on the phone to complain.
6) Productivity is at an all time high when you work from home.
=> Yes the first week, but your dismal finances will keep you up at night, all night and all I can say is good-luck being creative on 2 hours of sleep.
7) You can sleep late and sleep in.
=> Sleeping in is not going to make you money, it will definitely help you find your way back to the rat race very fast if you are not careful.
8) There is always something to do when you work from home.
=> Really?! Show me.
Better yet give it 3 months and then name one single thing that you can do that will not end up with you pulling at your hair in boredom.
It takes about 6 weeks to completely exhaust all the fun of staying at home. (6 weeks is being generous. Most normal people need 10 days.)
Remember, your family is at work or at school... you can't go to the movies, playing golf or playing video games until they return.
9) You will complete all the stages and alternate stages of your child's video games.
=> Actually this isn't a myth, it's true I've done it, in like 10 days.
10) You can organize your work better.
=> Have you met your ideal wife/husband yet? Spouses that have to leave the house very early in the morning will give you errands to do and will find ways to sabotage your organizational skills.
Hope these myths are not the reasons that you happen upon my lens, because they will guarantee you failure to work from home during the financial crisis. It takes commitment, harder work and iron clad business plan and implementation o make staying at home work.
I cannot stress this enough times, you need to push hard to make it work and be diligent not to get side tracked. If you loose your momentum from the first crucial 6 weeks then you will find yourself at the unemployment line, divorced and spiritually weakened.
I have made some of these mistakes and some were from observing other people with children try to make it work. The biggest challenge is Mastering Your Emotions. Get your head in the game and keep trying hard no matter what obstacles you face, never lose hope.
