Being Self-Employed

Ok, Here's the question. Is being self-employed all that it's cracked up to be? Ask anyone what they think about people who are self employed and I will guarantee you that the first response will be that they are all "rich". Yup, it's true, every self employed person is rich or suppose to be, baloney! Now, ask that same question of a dozen self-employed entrepreneurs and I bet you that you will hear twelve different responses.

Before working for the "man", I was self-employed on the East Coast having owned 4 small businesses; not all at the same time, thank the Lord. Being self-employed has it's pros and cons, ups and downs, good days and bad days etc. I was responsible for making sure that my employees made an income. I was responsible for my making and income and providing myself with Health Insurance and vacations. There was no one there when I was sick to answer the phone to tell them that I was taking a sick day as I had no sick days! I had no paid vacations as when I was lucky enough to take one, it was my own paid vacation and if i shut my business down to take the vacation it was also a loss of income for that period. When days were good I was usually able to thank my employees but when we had those bad days, I usually had no one to blame but myself as I was, the Captain of the ship!

My desk drawer had bottles of tums, Tylenol for headache #325 (self-employed headache) and a lot of other stuff to ease the pain. There was no such things as a 40hr work week and when police called at 2am to tell me that the business alarm was going off, there was no one else to call to have them get dressed, clear a snow path to the car to meet the police at the business door. I could go on and on and on, but you get the picture! There is so so much that one has to endure being self employed, HOWEVER, let me say this to you; that after working for the man for the past three years and putting up will all the everyday garbage and having to bite my lip ten times a day in fear I might say something wrong and upset the "man", I would give it all up to be back self-employed again. So, if you are self-employed and you are experiencing all of the above, thank yourself for the good days, thank yourself when you make accomplishments, thank yourself for having the type of employee that you would be and keep one thing in mind from one who has been there; the grass isn't always greener in the other yard!

The author Bruce Gordon has been self employed for the past 37 years, having owned four small business ranging from retail, service, restaurant business.

Self Employed Support Network

A business support professional is someone who works on a contract-basis with other self-employed people to help them successfully run their business. These business support professionals are also business owners themselves. They create a network of people who help each other get business, keep business, find business and run a business. The greater the size and expertise of a small business owner's network, the more success they will have in business. No one does it alone

What categories of jobs am I talking about when I refer to a small business support professional? Anyone who has the skills, talent, and personality traits in a variety of jobs can be a successful support professional. Examples include but are not limited to:

Receptionists
Administrative Assistants
Executive Assistants
Data Entry Clerks
Project Assistants
Bookkeepers
Professional Organizers
Graphic Designers
Freelance Writers
Creatives
Accountants
Web Designers
Coaches
Researchers
Marketing Professionals

Simply put - a support professional is anyone who provides top-notch assistance or a necessary service to other people who are self-employed. Many people who are self-employed find themselves creating a network of people they can call on when a new contract starts, when they need office assistance, or when they need marketing advice. This network of people creates a dynamic business environment yet allows the small business owner to avoid hiring full-time employees.

If you're self-employed, think about who is in your network. Consider expanding it to include more experts who can help you do what you best - but do it more efficiently and effectively. If you're thinking about becoming self-employed, now is the time to start building your own network of business support professionals. The ability to call on your network equals success.
