Build a Residual Income Business

If you are looking to build a business based on the goal of developing a residual income just be aware that there are many people who will take your dream and sell it back to you but their motives may well be selfish. The goal of residual income is worthy and worth striving for but there are many charlatans out there who will tell you this is the way to do it - or do it this way. There are companies who promote themselves based upon their income or pay plans. The truth is that none of them have a sustainable way to help you to grow a secure and sustainable income based around a workable plan. Watch the video, We've Lost The Plot Part 1 to see more.

My first bit of advice is find something that you can believe in - I knew that I couldn't sell something with any integrity that I couldn't see making a real difference to people. Yes money makes a difference but if that's all that is at stake then I'm off - money in itself does not motivate me on its own.

The Managerial Moment of Truth - by Bruce Bodaken and Robert Fritz

- this is really important

What if a technique existed that an organization's managers could learn to use, and because of that practice they would add anywhere from 25 to 40 percent more actual capacity to their organization without adding significant cost? Certainly the theory would be intriguing to any top executive or manager.

But theory it is not, according to organizational consultant and best selling author Robert Fritz and California-based Blue Shield CEO Bruce Bodaken in The Managerial Moment of Truth. Because this practice was learned and implemented by more than a thousand managers at Blue Shield, the company's revenue has risen from $3 billion to nearly $7 billion in five years. Other leading companies from a variety of industries are using the same technique with great success.

The critical technique the authors call the Managerial Moment of Truth (MMOT) is based on this premise: Truth is one of the most important competitive advantages there is in building a business. The actual Moment of Truth consists of two distinct events. The first is the awareness that there is a difference between what was expected and what was delivered. The second is the decision made about what to do with that information.

The MMOT is a concrete methodology that will teach managers how to recognize and deal with reality. Without perceiving reality, it is next to impossible to succeed because, invariably, decisions are made in a vacuum. Unless reality is penetrated, very little significant improvement can occur. The authors explain: "Truth telling too often has come to mean simply sharing opinions. Trading opinions usually doesn't lead to greater understanding. What's missing is the discipline to understand the foundation of various opinions. We do that by measuring conclusions against reality."

When the forward of a book closes by saying "If you are not ready for this I recommend you set this book aside," the reader knows it is not a typical business tome. Developing a discipline of truth-telling is challenging because, as the authors put it, "reality is an acquired taste."

The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People

This book by Steven Covey is one of the books that I keep referring to and have read many times either in chunks for referenceor in its entirety.
  1. Be Proactive. This element is all about our own personal response to what is happening around us. Every choice we make should be made based upon our values and vision.
  2. Begin with the end in mind. Before starting anything try to consider what the end result might look or feel like. Where do you want to end up? What does it represent?
  3. Put First Things First. This is all about prioritising based upon the first two habits. Deciding what to do and when to do it is what it is all about. How do you decide to do something?
  4. Think Win/Win. This is often talked about but in my experience in business rarely practised effectively. This habit is all about seeking mutual benefit. If you are dealing with a customer what solution benefits you both? There are many examples but this is one of the hardest concepts to grasp - but one of the most beneficial.
  5. Seek First To Understand, Then to be understood. This habit hinges around learning to listen to others. It is the art of conversation. learn to really listen and don't be afraid to ask questions if you don't understand.
  6. Synergise. two bits of wood glued together can hold vastly more weight than either separately - that is synergy. Apply this in your relationships and you'll not go far wrong.
  7. Sharpen the Saw. This might also be called exercise, continuous improvement, renewal of the body, spirit and soul. A blunt saw is hard work - sharpen the saw and things go much quicker.
