World Climate is a self regulating environment that now has big problems.

It will always be difficult to control emissions and enforce savings without government laws. The problem is that many world leaders are too close to the industry leaders and are subject to relentless lobbying to make it easier for companies to maximise their investment and often hide patients that would benefit the world, because it would effect those investments. Let's hope the world can agree in December a new Climate Protocol?

What is the Gaia Theory?

The Gaia hypothesis is an ecological hypothesis proposing that the biosphere and the physical components of the Earth (atmosphere, cryosphere, hydrosphere and lithosphere) are closely integrated to form a complex interacting system that maintains the climatic and biogeochemical conditions on Earth in a preferred homeostasis. Originally proposed by James Lovelock as the earth feedback hypothesis,Lovelock, James (2001), "Homage to Gaia: The Life of an Independent Scientist", (Oxford University Press) it was named the Gaia Hypothesis after the Greek supreme goddess of Earth.http://www.ecolo.org/lovelock/lovelock-online_chat-00.htm The hypothesis is frequently described as viewing the Earth as a single organism. Lovelock and other supporters of the idea now call it Gaia theory, regarding it as a scientific theory and not mere hypothesis, since they believe it has passed predictive tests.Lovelock, James (2007), "The Revenge of Gaia: Earth's Climate Crisis & The Fate of Humanity" (Basic Books)

What are the world leaders and you going to do?

I believe the world is a self-regulating programmed environment that adjusts to
normal changes. This is called the Gaia Theory, see aboue. The process is often over a long time, millions of years. But if a threat to its core program is made then the reaction can swift and violent. In a normal environment this would mean eliminating the source of the problem, which means humans.

So expect Mother Nature to continue reacting to the damage we are all doing to the environment until major changes are inevitable. Please visit my Environment pages for more information and links.

Is 500 Million is maximum number of people the world can really support?

How long? Who knows? What is likely that unless we change our wasteful way of living, control pollution, create products which last a lot longer the next generation and their children will inherit a world that is going out of control.

Limiting population, and encouraging better use of existing resources may help.

If somebody made the statement, The worlds population will be 500 million in 100 years, apart from ridicule what would happen. Northing because it is always other people's problem.

Emigrate, maybe if we can create a large cheap space transportation system

Over many years I read lots of SF books, and the world was always going to fail as the number of people increased and the raw materials started to run out. These authors could see it 40-50 years ago, why not the politicians?

Just take steel, if you continue to process the same material over hundreds of years the quality will reduce.

The world has finite resources and unless we start to do something now, maybe there will be no world for our grandchildren to inherit.

Could the world mount a mass transportation of people away from a dying, flooded world? Maybe that will have to happen if changes are not made NOW. Anyway that's my view, hope you will have your say as well.

Living with climate change

Living with climate change

Global warming is happening. Temperatures have already risen by 0.76 degrees since the industrial revolution and are projected to rise further by 1.8 - 4 degrees by the end of the century. The last time climate change happened at this pace was 125,000 years ago and led to a 4-6 metre sea level rise. Global warming at the upper end of the scale predicted by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change would have catastrophic consequences for Europe. Up to 30% of plant, animal and bird species would be wiped out and the threat of natural disasters such as landslides, floods and mudslides would increase significantly. Gaia Philosophy

Gaia philosophy (named after Gaia, Greek goddess of the Earth) is a broadly inclusive term for related concepts that living organisms on a planet will affect the nature of their environment in order to make the environment more suitable for life. This set of theories holds that all organisms on an extraterrestrial life-giving planet regulate the biosphere to the benefit of the whole. Gaia concept draws a connection between the survivability of a species (hence its evolutionary course) and its usefulness to the survival of other species.

While there were a number of precursors to Gaia theory, the first scientific form of this idea was proposed as the Gaia hypothesis by James Lovelock, a UK chemist, in 1970. The Gaia hypothesis deals with the concept of homeostasis, and claims the resident life forms of a host planet coupled with their environment have acted and act as a single, self-regulating system. This system includes the near-surface rocks, the soil, and the atmosphere. While controversial at first, various forms of this idea have become accepted to some degree by many within the scientific community (See Amsterdam declaration on Global Change). These theories are also significant in green politics.
