The Insiders Guide To World Of Warcraft
Grinding For Gold...
Grinding for gold is the most basic and most common form of gold farming. Since this is the most basic form of gold farming it does get a lot of attention from all sorts of players. However most players never end of grinding out the amount of gold they should. It's very easy to farm up to 250g/hour now with the Burning Crusade. The mobs drop a lot more coins, the items that drop vendor for a higher price. On top of this you will be getting greens, blues and epics that will be selling for an even larger price then before. You can sell your items for a lot more gold because the average coin drop rate itself has been increased. This means there are a lot more players out there with money to throw around.
Knowing the correct places to farm and know how to farm are key assets when it comes to playing World of Warcraft effectively. Many players make minor mistakes when it comes to farming that puts them far behind the rest of the competition.
Downtime is one of the most major mistakes players make when grinding gold. Downtime is the amount of time during grinding that you spend NOT killing other mobs. This includes running to the next mob, sitting for a drink, chatting to your friends, not chain-casting your next spell (casting the spell as soon as it's available) all of these things will drop your gold per hour rate. The most common downtime is sitting down to eat or drink. Every glass has a favorable "Grinding spec" and if you plan to farm for gold for a certain amount of time, it's well worth the money to re-spec to.
Every time you take a seat to drink or eat, you are knocking anywhere between 15-30 seconds off of your killing time. Let's say you can kill 5 mobs in a row without having to sit and drink or eat. That means, every time you kill 100 mobs you are spending 10 minutes on your butt. That's a pretty large amount of time, and most classes can't even make it 5 mobs with some of the specs.
For instance, my Mage was Fire Spec for a while until I realized I was only getting about 3 kills on average before I had to take a drink. I switched to frost, which is a premiere grinding spec and it got me up to 8 kills before I sat down. This is a great rate because I nearly cut my downtime to 2/3rd of the rate it was.
So next time you go out grinding, remember that downtime is a key penalty to the gold rate you pull in. You can easily double your gold rate over night by choosing the right spec for your character.

World of Warcraft Jewelcrafting Guide - Jewelcrafter

World of Warcraft Jewelcrafting Guide - Jewelcrafter
By James Howard
With the release of the Burning Crusade expansion pack, World of Warcraft players can now learn a new profession : Jewelcrafting will give you the ability to create necklaces with high attack power, crowns, rings with armor and defense, and other items which were beforehand only available as loot drops or rewards for quests. As a Master Jewelcrafter you will have the ability to enhance attributes in certain areas of your armor by cutting gems to socket into slots in your armour the better the jewel used the better the enhancement.
Any socketed item can have a gem installed in it by anyone, but cannot be changed apart from placing the gem into them. Sockets cannot be removed, added to or changed from any piece of gear. Once you have got a jewel from a Jewelcrafter, all you have to do to socket it is shift and right click the item you want and drop the jewel into the socket. After putting in the jewel, simply click the Socket Gems button to make the new item. You can swap an old jewel with a new one but in doing so you will destroy the old jewel.
Like most other skills, you will need to pair up your profession with a second skill. In the case of it you will need your second skill to be Mining as this will enable you as a Jewelcrafter to get hold of the raw materials you need more easily. With the materials, like metal ore, they can make jewelry to sell. At low levels, they are simple things like Copper Rings, but other things will become quickly available. To start off with you will have to get hold of a Jeweler's Kit, you can get this for 8s at a vendor. Making things available to your Jewelcrafting character will enhance their skills. Making the items that are in your catalogue in green text yield experience at a low rate so it might take more than two items to get a skill point whereas making items that are in yellow or orange will credit you with a point per item as well as earning more experience. The most common strategy is to find an item which uses a small amount of easily available materials and grind up skills by making lots of it. In this way, you will be able to hoard component items such as Delicate Bronze Settings and Copper Wire for later while increasing your skill. Until the higher levels, Jewelcrafting is mainly about making small trinkets and jewelry.
When you reach skill level 20, you will be able to learn Prospecting from your trainer. When you have learnt this skill you will be able to extract gems from the ore you mine. This is a great bonus over other Miners who don't have this skill and will increase the chance of getting gems for your own jewelry. If you don't decide on mining as your second profession you can still prospect ore, although you must have a Jewelcrafting skill at least the same as the minimum skill level for mining the ore you are after to prospect it.

This is not one of those books.
I just got my copy today, and my initial impression was how impressed I was by the thoroughness of it. This is a reference that will be of use for people of all skill and experience levels. The opening chapters provide a great introduction to Lua itself, then Lua in the context of WoW, and then hold your hand through creating your first addon, before diving into more complex concepts such as programmatic UI creation and state headers.
I'm the author of a number of high-profile WoW addons, including Omen and Chatter, and I can honestly say that this is a book that I'll actually use - and I don't use many references. Gentle enough for the new programmer, but meaty enough for the experienced. This is one that will be of genuine use to anyone interested in modding WoW, or understanding the WoW mod UI system. This is a genuine, stick-it-on-your-desk, mark-it-up-and-dog-ear-the-pages reference that you'll use for as long as you're developing addons.
Of note, this is actually a reference that may be of use to people embedding Lua in their own software projects. It dissects WoW's implementation of Lua, and how it ties into the user interface, and explains a lot of concepts that may be of use to people looking to use Lua in a non-WoW context. It's certainly not a reference on embedding Lua in your own application, but its explanation of WoW's implementation is a fantastic reference point.
If you have any interest at all in addon development, get this book.
