The Around the World Traveler

Almost everyone has aspirations on where they want to travel, or have lists of places to see before they die. Most people fall short of their goals but have several great travel experiences that they really enjoyed. Maybe they went to Hawaii for their honeymoon or backpacked around Europe during college. These fond memories are recalled again and again through photos, stories and keepsakes.

For a small subset of people, a few quality travel experiences are not enough. They want to travel EVERYWHERE and see EVERYTHING. These world travelers travel to some of the most beautiful and least visited spots on the globe. They experience things that most people can only dream about. These perpetual travelers are definitely a rare breed, but their stories and photos make them the envy of others who live vicariously through the world traveler's experiences.

What Are My Options for Traveling Around the World?

Several airlines offer an around the world plane ticket. Most specify the number of stops you may make and the amount of time you have to use the tickets. You also must keep going in the direction you chose to circumnavigate the globe - no backtracking!

You may also take an extended period of time to travel around the world, buying plane tickets or traveling overland as you go along. This is the option chosen for around the world travel by Gary Arndt.

What Should a World Traveler Pack?

Your clothing choices are important. You'll need clothing that is easy to wash in your hotel sink, and that dry quickly. You'll also need to keep an eye on the weight of everything, and consider the weather of the destinations to which you'll be travelling. Try to find clothing choices with options, like pant with zippers that zip the pants legs off to make shorts.

Bring boots for hiking, good tennis shoes, and sandals for the beach. You'll need two pair of pants/shorts, 4 t-shirts and several dressier shirts for eating at nice restaurants, etc.

Definitely bring a good quality camera! Bring a very light laptop with a wi-fi card for storing your photos and keeping in touch with "the real world". Also get waterproof bags for your camera and laptop - just in case.

Bring a water bottle for hydration, and don't forget your sunscreen. As well as your normal personal hygiene items (deodorant, soap, shampoo) consider bringing travel toilet paper if you'll be traveling to lesser developed countries. You'll never know when you'll need it, and you'll sure be happy you have it when you do!

How Much Will My Trip Around the World Cost?

It depends.

If you travel on an around the world plane ticket, first class costs around $8,000 while an economy class ticket costs around $4,000 - $7,000. Your lodging, food, and anything you buy to bring home would be in addition to your travel expenses.

If you are choosing the extended travel option where your travel fluctuates between air and land and you stay in inexpensive hostels, your trip might cost anywhere from $15,000 - $20,000 a year. If you need better accommodation than hostels, your costs would increase.

No, I could spend the rest of my life just exploring the USA.

No. I'm a homebody. If I can't go in a car, I don't want to go. There are still many places in the USA and Canada I'd like to see, but I'm also content to stay where I am.
