How do I find profitable products to sell on eBay?

Here's a question that the folks at Worldwide Brands as well as I, Gregg Birkner as an eBay Account Manager, get asked almost every single day.

"How do I find profitable products to sell on eBay?"

As an eBay Certified Solution Provider, Worldwide Brands hosts several workshops for eBay sellers throughout each year on product sourcing topics.

The workshops are a combination of course material with an interactive question and answer session.

For your convenience, a free eBook is now being offered that is an illustrated collection of the Worldwide Brands online workshops from 2007. At the end of each workshop, there is a link to the archived eBay workshop where you can learn from the questions of other sellers in the question and answer session.

The workshop titles included in the ebook are...

* From Hobby to Home Business

* How to Compete in a Crowded Market

* What is the difference between Liquidation,
Closeouts, and Surplus

* Understanding the Basics to Importing
Physical Products to Sell

* Building Supplier Relationships is Very
Important Especially for the Holiday Season

The lessons learned apply to all levels of selling online whether it is through auctions, stores or other sites.

Download it now by clicking HERE and begin learning how you can find profitable products to sell on eBay.

It's a great book and I'm sure you'll get a lot of value from it.

How to Use OneSource to Make Money ...

Once you're able to get products for whatever industry you want to tackle, you can make money in a number of ways:

Run hundreds of eBay auctions. Simply use the pictures and web copy the dropshippers and wholesalers provide you with to quickly create an auction. This allows you to set-up hundreds of auctions extremely fast just by copying and pasting. Then you sit back and allow the marketplace to bid up each item or you can lock in your profit by using 'buy-it-now'. Sellers are using the OneSource database right now to make thousands of dollars. This is one strategy you definitely want to put in action immediately.

Create a Yahoo Store. Yahoo is still the #1 destination online and now you can capitalize on that enormous of amount of traffic with your own Yahoo Store. You'll be able to set up different product lines without worrying about buying a huge inventory (if you use dropshippers or light-bulk wholesalers). You can see which products are working, expand on them and drop the products that are not selling. This is a great way to get an eCommerce website up and running quickly.

Instantly set-up an eBay store. eBay stores are easy to set-up and fairly inexpensive. You can easily get traffic to your store from your auctions or through pay-per-click search engines. You'll be able to fill your entire store up with items from dropshippers and wholesalers and set the exact profit margin you want to make from each item.

Set-up your own ecommerce website. Even if you don't know a thing about html programming, there's very inexpensive off-the-shelf software you can use to set up an internet website in a few hours. Then you simply use the OneSource database to find a supplier in the market you want to enter, set up an account, insert the pictures and descriptions you get from the wholesaler and you have your website ready to go.

Create an offline, true bricks-and-mortar store. Who says you have to stay on the internet? We tend to forget that with all of the noise made about the online market; most of the money spent is still offline. Now you can easily tap into the offline market with direct mail, TV and newspaper advertising and have your customers visit a real store when they are ready to purchase. You'll have all of the suppliers you need ready to stock your store with best-selling items.

Buy items at wholesale prices and trade them at their true retail price for goods and services you want. This is a great method that I don't see many people using. When you're able to buy items at such a huge discount, you hold an enormous bargaining chip in your hand. Let me give you an example: Say you want to go on vacation in Hawaii for a week and you found a great house to rent for one thousand dollars for the week. Instead of paying cash for it, you give the owner of the house one thousand dollars in credit to spend at your website. Now let's say you own a golf website. The owner of the vacation house spends the one thousand dollars at your golf store and you get the house in Hawaii for one week. Here's the beautiful part: The items purchased at your golf website only cost you $500 because you're able to buy them wholesale. You just cut your vacation costs in half, simply by issuing a credit. This can happen over and over again. There are dozens of barter clubs you can find online where people list thousands of goods and services they are willing to trade. It's addictive once you begin doing it and I guarantee you'll never want to pay retail for anything again.

Create an affiliate program and have an army of affiliates marketing products for you. The ultimate leverage is having your own affiliate program. You have people working hard to sell your products every day and you don't have to pay any commissions out until the sale is made. In the past you probably recognize the tremendous power that an affiliate program brings you, but maybe you never had a product of your own to take advantage of it. That's no longer an issue. Now you have as many products as you want to capitalize on all of that free traffic.

What Should I Sell Online? - Ideas for Choosing Product Lines

by Chris Malta & Robin Cowie

What NOT to Sell
Everyone who starts an eBiz faces the question: What do I sell? And most everyone seems to make two classic mistakes in the beginning:

    1. They try to sell what everyone else is selling-DVDs, electronics, designer clothing. The problem they encounter is that the market is already saturated with these products and the Suppliers typically do not work in small quantity. To make any profit at all, they'd have to buy huge quantities.

    2. They try to sell what they know and love. Unfortunately, unless there is a significant demand for what they know and love, they are going to be stuck with a lot of product they can appreciate but can't move.

What's an IDEA HOTSPOT?
Lisa Suttora of WhatDoISell.com coined the term "idea hotspot" to refer to anything, any place or person that "provide[s] you with an unending source of new product ideas, of market trends, of developing niches, and product line education. It is a fertile ground for product ideas." These hotspots keep you in touch with what people are buying, what things are up-and-coming, and what things are on their way out.

If your ideas all come from one or two places, you are limiting yourself. Expand your thinking-you might consider looking at one of these "hotspots" for inspiration:

  • Newspapers. You can get an idea of what is on the minds of consumers by simply reading the lifestyle section, the business section, or looking at the advertisements the big stores are putting out.
  • Consumer Publications. There are hundreds of magazines designed around niche products, niche hobbies, and niche markets. They are a terrific resource for building niche product lines.
  • Malls/brick-and-mortar stores. Talk to the salespeople, find out what is selling. You can even source your Suppliers off the boxes. Get the manufacturer's name, call them up, and ask who their local distributor is in your area.
  • Trend-spotting websites, such as www.trendwatching.com, www.influxinsights.com, and www.trendhunter.com.
  • The entertainment industry-movies and TV drive product trends. If you know what is coming out in the movie industry, you can start sourcing related products before the trend begins. Imdb.com maintains a list of movies that are going to be released in the coming year. So if you know now that a particular movie is going to be coming out, you can start stocking up on relevant products before they become pricey-such as Batman, Superman, Curious George, and Star Wars.
Write It Down
Suttora strongly suggests carrying a product sourcing notebook, be it a PDA or hand-held notebook, to keep track of your ideas as they come. She warns, "90% of ideas that you don't write down will get lost%u2026When you're at these idea hotspots, if you see a hundred ideas for products to sell, you won't be able to remember those. You've got to write them down in your product sourcing notebook and then go back and start researching them."

Chris Malta's 4 Critical Rules for Wholesale Product Sourcing

  • Rule #1: Don't buy "Complete Internet Stores" that come pre-loaded with products to sell. The reason why is that you won't be able to get enough profit margin to make it worthwhile. You simply end up being a low-commissioned sales person for someone else's business.
  • Rule #2: Not all wholesale suppliers are willing to work with small, home-based internet business owners. Believe it or not, some suppliers don't want to work with online businesses. They like working with traditional 'bricks and mortar' companies. They just don't get the internet. You need to know this going in or you'll simply be wasting your time. We screen every single source in our database to make sure they are willing and able to work with you.

Other suppliers will work with you if you have $50,000 or $100,000 to pony up for the initial supply of goods. This simply isn't practical for most people. That's why we list companies that are willing to dropship items to individual customers or deliver to you in low quantities (known as light-bulk). This allows you to test products with little to no risk and then roll out on a large scale once you find a winner.
  • Rule #3: Don't work with middleman. This is one of the top scams I see in the wholesale sourcing market.

    Here's how it works:

The middleman goes and sets up an account with a real wholesaler and then builds a website advertising himself as the real wholesaler. This is a lie!

He's not the real wholesaler, he's simply there to charge you an extra markup on the products you buy to sell to your customers. Once you submit an order to him, he simply emails the real wholesaler and has the products delivered to you or your customer.

The manufacturer sells the product to a factory authorized wholesaler for $3.50. The wholesaler sells it to the middleman for $5.00. He sells it to you for $7.50. You sell it to your customer for $10.00.

    Why is this so bad?

Because you won't be able to compete with your competitors who deal directly with the wholesaler. You see, it should work like this...

The manufacturer sells the product to a factory authorized wholesaler for $3.50. The wholesaler sells it to you for $5.00. You sell it to your for $7.50.

This will allow you to compete with your competitors and not pay a steep 'middleman fee' that automatically prices you out of the marketplace.
  • Rule #4: The search engines are a horrible place to find real wholesale suppliers.

There are 2 major reasons why this is true. Reason #1 is that thousands of unethical middleman have littered the search engines with misleading marketing. You can do a search at any major search engine and you'll get bombarded with ads from middleman trying to line their pockets with your money. A real, honest to God wholesaler simply doesn't stand a chance against these slick marketers.

Which leads me to the second reason using search engines to find wholesalers is a losing proposition. Reason #2: Real wholesalers don't really want to be noticed on the Search engines. I know it's hard to believe, but it makes sense when you look at it from wholesalers point of view. They have large accounts with major retailers and they don't consider small, home based businesses that important to their bottom line.

Yes, they are willing to work with you if you do enough digging to find out who they are, but they are not advertising themselves online. You have to do the detective work to find them and then you have to qualify and screen them to make sure they will do business with you.

It's a tedious process if you have to go at it alone. I'll show you how to get all of this work done for you and eliminate all of the headaches associated with it.
