The Wormling Book 1: The Book of the King - Great Book for Young Readers

A facinating book for young readers who have mastered eary chapter books and are ready for a challenge. Written by Jerry B. Jenkins and Chris Fabry, this exciting story of Owen Reeder is an exciting start to the 5 book Wormling series.

From the back of the book:"Nothing Special is the best way to describe Owen Reeder - at least that's what he's been told all his lfe. When a stranger visits his father's bookstore, Owen's ordinary life spirals out of control and right into a world he didn't even know existed."

The Wormling Series: Book 1 The Book of the King

by Jerry Jenkins and Chris Fabry

What a page turner the Book of the King is. I bought it as a Christmas present for my 8 year old son who loves fantasy stories and Dragons. So far his favorite book has been Dragon Rider by Cornelia Funke. I had intended that he read it to himself but I started reading it to him and then couldn't stop. I read out loud, something I don't particularly enjoy, for 2 hours or more each night until we were finished. One night I read over 10 chapters, neither of us could sleep until we found out what happened next.

The chapters are short about 4-8 pages long. Each is packed full of action and suspense. The main character Owen Reeder would be the pathetic looser kid in your high school, the nerdy invisiable type. However, the minute you meet Owen between the books pages you like him, by the end of the story you are rooting for him.

It's not an early chapter book, my son reads Harry Potter and this would fit along the same reading ability and interest.

Wait a minute... didn't Jerry Jenkins write the Left Behind Series based on his interpretation of the Rapture and the Book of Revelation? Yes he did write the series and along with Chris Fabry they wrote Left Behind for Kids. Not sure I want my son to read that series, he already gets himself tied in knots worrying about the future.

The Plot of The Book of the King

Book One of the Wormling Series

If Owen Reeder were in your high school you would not have noticed him. He would be considered not very interesting and certainly not a popular boy. He is the type of boy bullies would flock to and he would be considered a loner.

As soon as you meet Owen Reeder between the pages of the Book of the King you instantly like him, he is kind and running away from the school bully. By the end of the book you are rooting for Owen and holding your breath as the bullies keep getting bigger.

The antagonist in the story was a nice surprise, it is a dragon. My son loves stories with dragons in them and I didn't know there was one in it when I bought it. This only added to his interest in the story. The dragon in this story is the apitomy of all evil and wants nothing more then to consume Owen with his firey breath.

Owen slowly learns about the evil surrounding him and if I say anymore I'll only give away some of the surprising twists and turns in the book.

Each Chapter is filled with suspense and you can't wait to read the next chapter to find out how each situation Owen finds himself in turns out.

The ending is abrupt to say the least, since we didn't have the next book in the series, The Changling, we were left hanging. I promptly ordered the next 2 books from Amazon.ca, both of us are waiting with anticipation for them to arrive.
