The Weathy Jones Family of Savannah
Noble Jones was one of Georgia's first settlers, having come over in 1733 with General Oglethorpe. It was his industry and hard work which build an empire for the Jones' family. The first last will and testaments of this family numbered as many as 50 pages in the Chatham County records, detailing and inventorying a vast estate. Slaves were not allowed in Georgia until after 1752. The Jones' family had white indentured servants to help them build a great economy for the people of Savannah. The first colonists build brick homes, the brick being purchased from Thomas Salter who first tried his hand on Hutchinson's Island, but who afterwards, had to remove this operation to Salter's Island where there was better soil. Brick homes, brick sidewalks, huge white blossoms of magnolia trees, plentiful game and ambition carved a viable economy out of this wilderness. Homes and plantations were tailored after old English manor houses.
