World of Warcraft - Innocent Online Game - Or Addictive Nightmare?

Dr. Maressa Hecht Orzack, a clinical psychologist at McLean Hospital in Massachusetts, has come forward to claim that up to 40 percent of World of Warcraft players are addicted to the game.  Can someone really be addicted to a video game?  Where do you draw the line?  When does the fantasy world of online role playing bleed in to your daily life?

Do you know anyone (or yourself) who has ever broken plans because of WoW?  Do you know people who ignore their friends and family?  How is online gaming any different than say watching TV?

While this Squidoo Lens can't cover the complexities associated with addiction, it is a serious question.  What do you do if someone you love is forsaking their day to day life for a game?  When do you draw the line?

Yes, they are evil and serve no purpose in society except to waste time and ruin lives.

HolyCrusader says:

Yes, and the people running the companies should be hung, drawn and quartered.

jas says:

should be banned, its dangerous!

Wiser says:

Yes, they are evil and serve no purpose in society except to waste time and ruin lives.

Exactly.

Kik says:

Well, I dunno about banned, but they should put a limit as to how much time you can spend on it every day/week.

My boyfriend has always played wow, but now since last year it has just escalated, and I seem to always take second place to any goings on in the game, be it raids or rated battlegrounds and such. And it's beginning to reach its limit for me, I don't know that I can keep living like this. I've talked to him about it before, but it's like he forgets it overnight, it's seriously an addiction. He seems to take his personal relationships ingame more seriously than his relationship with me. I am frustrated, sad, and very very disappointed, but the way it is going right now, we're not gonna last.

I have played the game too, so it's not like I hate the game itself. But I was a rather casual gamer and I no longer play it. Also I never let it dictate my day or take priority over my real life relationships.

bob says:

YES OMG THEY ARE GAY

Just a guy says:

My wife plays 40+ hours a week. I hate WOW. I am scared to ask her to choose between it and me because I think that she will actually take the stupid game. She doesn't work because of WOW
She is a very smart lady who now I have very little in common with except our children because she only ever thinks of World of Warcraft. I am very sad and angry and not really sure what to do.

Pete says:

My 16 year old became addicted to WOW to such an extent that he played 24/7 except for sleep and school and this went on for two years. My wife and I divorced over this issue because it got so bad that I grabbed him, swore at him and threatened him (I told him I didn't mean it) but my wife left with him and protected him so he could continue his addiction. He came back home after three months and my wife didn't. I struggle in trying to grow him up but we are in a better place now and he doesn't see his mother much as he said " she raised him wrong". I couldn't agree more. Kids need limits and I was the only one who tried to do that with him.

I Couldnt Even Focused On my Studies Or Bond With my parent Because of WoW especially Dota...... Urghhh.....I hope This WoW ( Garena Especially would be banned for only A YEAR for it is the main server where people around the world connect via- this software. sultab says:

keep everything but ban WOW

Heck no! Ever heard of personal responsibilty? The government shouldn't ban games because some people can't handle it.

Micky D says:

All you hill billy fucks saying that it should be banned, you are dickheads. You most likely live in a liberal country and rage about communism and other shit. Shut up. Let people learn self control for themselves. If they can't stop playing a game to do shit, society doesn't want them or need them outside.

josh says:

i agree with Necromus put the warnings about addiction on it i think that would do good. :)

LJNIC says:

no i don't think so i used to play WoW and it was pretty fun and then i dropped out and may start again idk

Wiser says:

No offense, but the people that choose this "Heck no!" option are incredibly ignorant.
Try studying psychology and how Blizzard structures WoW and its quests before foolishly thinking, "oh it's just a personal problem, WoW is innocent". Say it's a personal problem is like NOT blaming cocaine for making people addicted, which is, I'm sorry to say, very stupid.

Bojan says:

No!

john says:

No. There are many activeties in the world that people spend lots of time on. Dont blame the activity blame the person.

Daniel says:

I play WOW almost half year and it doesnt take a primary place in my life I'm 17 years old I'm learn in school Im going to a gym 3 times a week I'm also working in ikea in customer service I have a driving lessons professional dancing course I like to go to celebrate in weekends with my friends and ofcourse and most with my girlfriend. and still I can play 2 hours a day in wow and it's quite fair enough for me, i this 2 hours I can lvl up or almost lvl up and I don't need more time to play. You can play wow and stay human it's not so hard as you think!

davidddd123 says:

no wayy, wow is keeping me away from heroine, which i was addicted to....

marko1997 says:

No way

Necromus says:

I don't think they should be banned outright but they should come with warnings of the possible side-effects just like alcohol and cigarettes. They should maybe be regulated to ensure they are not designed using psychological knowledge to get the player to do things they normally would not find fun to do (some MMORPGs do this). There should also be mandatory support groups provided for people addicted to these to access in the same way there are gambling support groups for casinos, etc.
