Everything you need to know to create an awesome tailor!

My first WoW character was a human mage, and I made her a tailor. Not only has she created much of her own high-level gear, tailors can create many highly sought after patterns for cloth-wearing characters and role playing fanatics.

Why tailoring?

Tailoring is often looked down upon as a profession because cloth is the weakest of the armors. But if you figure that mages, warlocks, and priests can wear only cloth, there's plenty of need for great cloth gear. (Some druids and paladins wear cloth gear for the spells.)

Unlike leatherworking, which requires you to also skin or purchase your leather, you don't need an additional skill to be a tailor. All of your cloth can come from mob kills or donations from kind friends.

Another benefit of knowing a great tailor is that you can easily look stylish. Why not be the tailor that outfits all the stylish people? Tailors create the prettiest and most majestic costumes for hard-core role-players, and those who just like to look good while kicking some ogre butt.

Around the holidays, tailors can get great patterns that everyone will want to buy. Set a price or ask for tips. You can even require they have their own materials. These costumes can mean big bucks, er gold, for you around the holidays.

For the mage tailor...

If you're a mage, tailoring provides many perks along the way. Once your character reaches level 57, and your tailoring reaches 300, you have the ability to create a bind on pickup item that is wearable only by mages (so it only makes sense that a mage tailor could use it).

Cool things tailors can make

There are certain items that only tailors can make, and they have to reach at least mid-level tailoring in order to learn the pattern.
  • Red Winter Clothes
This Santa outfit is a seasonal favorite, and was available during Christmas 2007. Keep an eye out for the ladies wearing these in 2008 - they're quite sexy.
  • Enchanted Mageweave Pouch
This 16-slot bag holds only enchanting supplies.
  • Colored bags and shirts
For the role-playing fanatic, tailors can make bags and shirts in different colors.
  • White Wedding Dress
You can buy the wedding dress pattern from a vendor or off the auction house, to make the role-playing fan's favorite item - the white wedding dress.

Getting special patterns

A list, coming soon!

Get World of Warcraft

If you don't have the game, you can't have the fun. And, of course, you'll want to make sure you get at least one of your characters to 55 so you can get the much anticipated Death Knight in the future expansion, Wrath of the Lich King.

Farming for linen

Linen is the first level of tailoring that you will learn.
  • Defias Hideout in Westfall (31, 32)
  • Deadmines Instance in Westfall
I only collected three stacks of linen in the time it took me to go through the Deadmines solo with a 62 mage, but if you're willing to buy it on the AH, you can sell all the junk and greens you get for cash to do so.

Selling linen for profit

Even as a low-level item, linen has the potential to fetch a pretty penny on the auction house. Linen is used in the first level of tailoring and first aid, and it's easy to go through a lot of it.

Players often neglect first aid at first, and vendor their linen. They end up buying it later as pieces, so sell it in stacks of 20 pieces, rather than in bolts.

Linen is used in several recipes for other professions, such as blacksmithing and engineering. Again, these players need the cloth, not bolts.

Linen is also used in the quests Gathering Materials (10 cloth) and The Tome of Divinity (10 cloth). This makes it worthwhile to keep it as pieces (don't make it into a bolt) and split the stack of 20 in half.

Farming for wool

  • Deadmines in Westfall
I was told to go here to farm wool, but I still ended up with more linen. It's decent if you have the time and bag space to go through. You can sell all the junk and greens you get, and buy wool on the AH.
  • Furbolgs in Ashenvale

Selling wool for profit

Wool has recently had a very high resell rate on the Auction House. Wool is used for reputation quests, tailoring, bandaging, and various other quests and professions.

Farming for silk

Silk is the third type of cloth you will use as a mage, and it's also a great item to donate (if you have extra or don't mind farming) to get reputation for Darnassus. (If you're a human, you can use the rep to get an awesome sabre cat mount!)
  • Scarlet Monastery, Tirisfal Glades
As a level 29-36 with a group, the Scarlet Monastery instance in Tirisfal Glades is a great place to farm what some call a "sick amount of silk in a short time."

Farming for mageweave

  • Deadwood Village, Felwood
After walking all over Tanaris and Feralas trying to find something better, I went back to Deadwood Village to the Deadwood Furbolgs in southern Felwood. (What is a Furbolg, anyway?) The Deadwood creatures have a decent 60-80% drop rate depending on your luck, there are dozens in the area, both alone and in pairs and trios, and they respawn very quickly. Since they do respawn quickly, be careful they don't spawn on top of you!

Selling mageweave for profit

Mageweave is used for tailoring, bandaging, and reputation quests, and it sells for one of the higher prices of the cloth drops.

Farming runecloth

  • Dire Maul (60, 45), Feralas
The 52-53 Gordok Ogres drop an average of 1+ piece of Runecloth per kill. Even if you find yourself going 4-5 kills without a drop, most of the drops I did get were 3-5 pieces, so you get a good average. The ogres are far enough apart that you should easily be able to solo without agroing others, and it's a quick way to get some great exp. My only gripe is that they aren't very quick to respawn, so I spend a lot of time running between them, but I have yet to see another player farming. The ogres don't wander much, but beware of the occasional hyena.
  • Scarlet Spellbinders (54, 23), Western Plaguelands
On Thottbot some WoWers complained of the low drop rate of a quest item, but said they did get a lot of Runecloth. The mobs respawn at a decent rate if you're not in a rush, but after killing all 7 Spellbinders I could find at the tower, I only had 3 pieces of Runecloth.
