What is Precycling?

Precycle before you recycle!

Precycling is trying to reduce waste by "pre-thinking" our purchases. While recycling is, of course, a positive thing, it still requires energy to transport the materials, melt them down and then re-manufacture items. Precycling tries to avoid the amount of stuff that gets chucked into landfills AND the recycling bin to begin with. Here are some tips:

Buy in bulk. Avoid individually wrapped items.

Buy items that come in recyclable packaging
instead of non-recyclable.

Avoid junk mail.

Use a computer instead of "real" magazines and newspapers.

Bring your own utensils with you instead of using plastic ones.

Use cloth handkerchiefs and napkins.

And of course, reduce and reuse as much as you can, first!

What About Paper Gift Bags Given to Me?

My Wrapsacks super-secret frugal tip!

I have several Wrapsacks that I use to give gifts just within my family, to my children and husband. I have used and reused these bags for years now! But with four children, as you might imagine, we receive many lovely paper gift bags. I use a few of these for my family, but most of them I keep for "regifting" - when we have a gift to give to someone outside the family. If my stack of paper gift bags gets too big, I bundle them up for donation to the local Goodwill store, to benefit not just the charity but those who need to shop there.
