Write a children's song

Ranked #25,737 in Parenting & Kids, #1,184,096 overall

You don't have to be Lennon or McCartney to get a new tune going! Especially for children's music!

Here is a quick way to write a new song for your classroom or just for fun - and you don't have to be a Mozart to get this going. Just take a traditional song with a familiar tune (like "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star") and write some new words. Often the original song will provide some lyrical ideas.

I usually try to find a song that has something to do with the topic I want to write about. I have done this with "The Crawdad Song" which is available on my A Family Songbook recording. I made the song more literal - just a fun sing-along about a fishing trip. Get a pdf. file with lyrics and chords to my version of "The Crawdad Song" for your own enjoyment.

Listen to "The Crawdad Song" mp3 with original lyrics by Chuck Cheesman.

Since Halloween is coming soon, some good examples are found in this Halloween song lense. You'll see that several of the lyrics have been placed to traditional tunes.

Now get to work!

Kid's music songwriters

artists...

Obviously, another strategy for writing is to come up with original music and lyrics. I'll hope to add more content here in the future.

Examples of artists who write some great kids' music - based on my personal favorites:

Ralph Covert
Raffi
Laura Doherty
Karen Banks-Lubicz
Woody Guthrie

My own A Family Songbook CD has some examples. I like sometimes using a 12 bar blues form for kids' songs. Two reasons: A lot of other children's artists don't use this form and also it offers some jumping off points for teaching older students about a unique American musical form.
