Dance Like No One's Watching
Live without caring what others think of you.
Okay, so the saying is a little cheesey but that doesn't mean it isn't true. You really should live your life according to how you want to live - what is right, what is wrong, what is fun, what is not - and don't care what others think.I spent a major part of my younger years making decisions based on how I thought I would look to other people. During my early teen years that's all I did. That's why I played football even though at the time I was only five foot nothin', a hundred and nothin'. I was Rudy without the heart. And I got murdered every day in practice. I wonder what people thought of me then? That's why I wore the clothes I wore. The way I spoke, the way I acted, the things I did, they were all carefully orchestrated to try to make myself look good or seem good to others. Did I succeed? I don't know. I was too busy trying to make myself look good to stop and find out if I was succeeding. I suspect I wasn't. Because even if I was, I still wasn't winning. It's a constant struggle and one that will never end.
Luckily, when I hit about seventeen I decided I was sick of the whole "please them" mentality. I started doing my own thing. And you know what? I found myself hanging out with more people and feeling a whole lot better about myself.
So who the hell cares what others think? It's true you know, you can't please all the people all of the time. Let the filthy, lying politicians wear themselves out trying to do that. You should just do what makes you happy. Do what you believe to be the right thing. And live each day like it's your first, your last, and your only day. Sing in the street if you feel like it. Dance like a geek if you want to. (I did - see photo). Sure, some people might think you are crazy and maybe they're right. I'm crazy. But I'm also pretty damn happy most of the time. And I feel like I live life the way I was meant to live it. Remember, the end wil come someday (hopefully many, many years from now). Do you want to stop and wonder if others liked you or would you rather know that you liked yourself? I choose the latter. I hope you do too.
Writing Should Not Strike Fear in Your Soul
How to begin writing and why you should
So I love to write but I recognize that many people do not. In fact, most people would prefer to watch television or IM or talk on the phone or whatever. Truth is, I've spent plenty of time trying to so those sorts of things myself. But it makes me miserable. I can't stand to go long periods of time without writing something, anything.Okay, so I may be a bit freakish in that regard. But recent studies have shown that people who write are generally more in touch with themselves than those who do not write. So what? Well, being in touch with yourself is the first step toward happiness.
So go ahead, sit down and write a paragraph. Maybe even start a journal. What will you write about? Anything. Everything. Why is is raining today? Why didn't Jimmy call me back last night? Why in God's name did Brad Pitt leave Jennifer Aniston for sloppy seconds from Billy Bob Thornton? Granted, it is Angelina but still... Okay, I digress. Time to end this. Sorry if I bored you. But go ahead. Try and write. Just write like you talk. Write like you yell. Write however you want. There is no wrong way you know. (There's a really bad joke to be inserted here but I'll resist.)
