Do you know a writer?

This list will help you find the best gifts out there for writers.

Know a writer, need some gift ideas?

This list will help you find that perfect gift and tell you what to avoid.

1. Get a gift from my cafepress store or my zazzle store
The Number One spot for cool and affordable writer's gifts.

I am a writer looking to get the word out about my book any way I can. Unfortunately when I tried to find some great gifts on the internet I came up short. Sure there were lots of fountain pens, but I am not a fancy-schmancy 75 dollar pen kind of person. I would rather have a laptop. I also found some shirt designs that were rather uninspiring. I'm not trying to put down other peoples designs here but the words: Ask me about my book printed in Times New Roman on a shirt don't excite me all that much.

That's why I decided to make some fresh, funny and affordable designs for all the writers out there with a sense of humor.

2. A laptop computer.
Most writers would much rather have one of these than ye olde fashioned inconvenient fountain pen, happy graduation, sorry I am not too creative monogrammed pen set, or upside down writing space pen. So if you have the means, I highly recommend it, laptops are so choice.

3. A ticket to a writers conference.
Give your author friend a chance attend panels, clumsily attempt to network with a depressed poet from Great Neck Long Island, enter a contest they deserve to but won't win, and to trample lesser mortals for a chance at a five minute session with a yawning, indifferent agent or editor. If this conference is somewhere exotic like Hawaii, even better.

4. A Novel.
Most writers love to read so some good fiction would always be welcome. Don't go for the depressing talk show book of the month though. Chances are they have read that along with Harry Potter 7. If you haven't read anything lately don't be afraid to ask for a recommendation.

5. A book about writing itself.
Chances are they have the Writer's market agent guide already but anything else about writing or publishing is usually more than welcome by aspiring authors.

6. A DVD.
Yes, yes I know the book was better, but DVD's are still fun to get. There are plenty of movies out there about writers and writing. Two that come to mind are Wonder Boys and Stranger than Fiction. Or you could get something fun like Schoolhouse Rock. The DVD doesn't have to be about an author it can just have good writing like Gilmore Girls. (Look for the Norman Mailer cameo.)

7. One of those pillows with armrests sticking out. If you know any writer who is nostalgic for 1985 and writes in bed this thing would be perfect. When I was 11 I rocked a pink courdoroy one. It matched my giant eraser that said For Big Mistakes.

8. A nice journal.
I personally don't recommend a college lined notebook from the dollar store, because you may come off as a one subject teensy bit cheap.

9. A gift card.
If you were just planning on copping out and getting a gift card, then how come you read this whole list? Huh?

What not to get.

1. A subscription to a writing magazine.
If they are serious about writing they already have one. If you absolutely must get them a magazine subscription go for something that will give them inspiration. Mental Floss is pretty intelligent and funny. US weekly not so much.(Not that I let that stop me from reading it. Paris Hilton=literary hero.)

2. A Book Light.
Just 'cause it's a boring cliche that is on every other great gift for writers list. When I want to read in bed I turn on a real lite, not squint under the covers with a flashlight looking at naked natives in a 1954 National Geographic.

3. Any book written by Paris Hilton, Nicole Ritchie, Ethan Hawke or Macaulay Culkin. (Sadly all of these people have written books.)

4. A typewriter.
Don't be cute and get one from an antiques store. Most writers hate the idea of having no way to delete or save. In fact there are probably a lot of writers who never even seen a typewriter before.

5. A pen.
Didn't I cover this above? pen = boring. I can go to the dollar store myself and get a pack of imitation bics.
