Writing a Comparison Essay

A comparison or contrast essay is just a paper based on the similarities and differences.between two objects, places or even people. At first glance a comparison essay might seem like a simple paper to write, but there is a catch!

Help I Need Topics?!

Ok maybe a few.

Sometimes it is difficult to find two topics you will want to write about. Remember when choosing your topics make sure you have some interest in them. This will definitely show in your work and keep your reader's reading. Here are just a few topics to get you going in the right direction.

-Apple's Ipod or Creative Zen music players.
-Best vacation spots.
-The best mall In your area, or even the country.
-Different decades. 1920's to 2010.
-Living on a farm or a big city.

Before You Begin Writing

Before you begin writing you will need to first pick out your topics you will compare. The only real model you need to follow when choosing your topics is to make sure they are related. Basically don't try to compare the new Toyota Camry to Las Vegas, its just not going to come out pretty. So when you finally pick out your topics it is time to start brainstorming. Before you start writing out the introduction you will need to make a list of things that are similar between your topics, you will then follow up with a list stating the differences between the two topics. After making the lists, you will then put together a simple statement that will state the overall assessment of your comparison essay. This will be your topic sentence. Your list will provide you the topics for your paragraphs.

Structuring Your Comparison Essay

So now it is time to write your essay. The structure of your comparison essay is entirely up to the connections and differences between the topics you have selected. If your paper will only consist of many small differences. Your paper would start with a introduction of the two topics you are comparing. In your first body paragraph you will discuss the first similarity on the topics. The next paragraph you will discuss the differences between the topics, this can go on and on until you have made all of your points.
