Writing a Journal

Writing a Journal is One of My Favorite Hobbies
I went through a period of intense personal growth, self-reflection and healing about ten years ago. Because I love writing, and because I'm very introspective, I chose a journal as my tool. It became my constant companion for pondering, processing and purging. I poured my heart and soul into my journal. In the process, I worked through many things to the point of a huge awakening. It wasn't just a journal though! I filled about 35 journals during my period of intense writing! I also wrote in many different ways. Sometimes I recorded quotes that were meaningful to me. Sometimes I wrote freely, just letting out all my thoughts. Sometimes I "spewed" and vented. Mostly I wrote poetry. I also wrote about other people, or things in nature (as you'll see below).
Now, writing a journal isn't like breathing. But it's still important to me . . . a hobby, really. I write now when I'm inspired, when I find an awesome quote that I want to record, when I record what I'm grateful for each night, or when I'm reflecting on the deep things of life.
I created this page to share a bit about writing a journal in general . . . and to share some of my journal entries. Enjoy!

Reasons for Writing a Journal
Writing a Journal Can Serve Many Purposes

The journal in the picture is a dream journal. That's one purpose of writing a journal - - to record things like dreams or prayers or quotes or things you're thankful for in order to remember them. Other purposes might be:
What other purposes can you think of for writing a journal? Let me know below.
Ways to Write a Journal
Writing a Journal Can Be Done in a Variety of Ways

There are so many ways to write in a journal! Some people journal in a very basic way by writing in a plain notebook. Some people create beautiful artwork as their expressions (there are some links later on the page to some sites about this). Others record dreams or prayers.
How do you journal? Let me know in the poll following this section.
I've written in journals in different ways. My favorites are writing to ponder things, or writing poetry.
Here's something I wrote as I pondered A New Earth by Eckhart Tolle and reflected on his writings about Beingness. If you've read the book, this will make sense. If you haven't, it may or may not make sense. But it still gives you an example of my thought processes in my writing.
We Call it Bird
We call it "bird."
But it's essence. It's life.
It's an expression or creation of Life.
It's life in a particular form.
We call that form "bird."
With "bird" we associate things like wings, flight, chirping, flying into windows, stupid, dirty, feathers, beaks, poop, worms, trees, nests.
This becomes its identity.
Yet, the beingness or essence that is the "bird" is rarely known.
Our connection with that essence is rarely experienced.
So we don't "see" it and love it and treasure it and be with it.
It's the same with our fellow human beings.
We call it "human."
But it's essence. It's life.
It's an expression or creation of Life.
It's life in a particular form.
We call that form "human."
More specifically, we may call that form "woman," "wife," "mother," "friend," "sister," "Julie." We may associate brown hair, pretty, calm, stubborn, the house down the street, Ukrainian, Canadian, Buddhist, cancer-survivor, teacher, narrow-minded, intelligent . . . or any other characteristic . . . with "Julie."
This becomes who "Julie" is.
Yet, the beingness or essence that truly is "Julie" is rarely known. Our connection with that essence is rarely experienced. So we don't "see" it or love it or treasure it or be with the "is-ness" that is "Julie."
We judge.
We like or dislike.
We associate or dismiss.
We mistreat.
We ignore.
We go about our own business, unaware of "Julie's" beingness . . . and unaware of our own.
We're:
We're rarely just being. Rarely just being with God/Source/Spirit, creation, others, ourselves. Rarely just being who we really are . . .
. . . loving
. . . at peace
. . . in each moment

This is a prose poem I wrote based on a friend's experience of abuse:
The Secret
No, not again.
She's too weak, too weary to fight.
He looms over her like an immense shadow.
Terror,
Hatred,
Wonder of what she did to deserve it.
In her mind she curls up into a sobbing ball and rocks herself into comfort.
PAIN!
Ripping pain!
Reality surfaces.
No!
She lashes out!
Somehow, she finds the strength to resist.
Hitting,
Screaming,
Flailing wildly,
She breaks free and runs.
Aching,
Screaming inside,
Feeling dirty, ashamed, used, unloved.
Into a heap she falls,
Desperate to cleanse the filth from her body,
Desperate for it all to end.
Alone.
But now she has hope.
Her torment is known.
She can heal,
heard . . .
loved . . .
safe . . .

I wrote this prose poem after driving through a stretch of the most incredible ice falls I've seen:
Icy Voices
Thunderous, rushing falls
Stopped in cold, aqua stillness,
Suspended on the lifeless mountainside,
Resting amid layered blankets of snow.
Trickling streams, intricately woven
Paused in mid-motion,
Frozen in time,
Pointing the way to where they once flowed.
Crystal clear, graceful motion
Now a majestically preserved memory -
Silenced but still speaking . . .
Telling the tale of a time past,
Whispering of a new life to come.

What's Your Favorite Method of Writing a Journal?
Writing in an Eco-Friendly Journal
Writing in a "Green" Journal is Really Important to Me

It didn't used to matter what I wrote in as long as it was pretty! I love journals that have gorgeous artwork on the cover, pretty paper inside, and quotes written in fancy writing!
But . . .
Over time, I've become more conscious of the environment and how I can help to care for it. So, I choose green, or eco-friendly, journals now. Sometimes I write on Elephant Poo Poo Paper. Most of the time I just write in basic, plain journals made of recycled materials. But there are some really pretty tree-free journals and other eco-friendly journals, so it doesn't just have to be about boring stuff! You can see some of them below.

- I've started many journals over the years - usually at a point of wanting to vent and express myself freely, though I don't "finish" the pages. I'm always attracted to new journals with their crisp pages or inspiring quotes. Great selection on journals. Your poetry is beautiful and powerful - thank you for sharing it with us.

- Wow, this is such a wonderful share and a wonderful lens.
Yes, I journal. It's been the most important part of my therapy for PTSD. My journal doesn't judge me, it listens patiently until I'm ready to listen to myself.
