When You Just Can't Think of a Thing to Write, Use Writing Prompts

It's called writer's block. Your mind goes blank. There's nothing worse for a writer when it happens.

What can you do? There are a lot of tricks you can employ. Take a break, do something unrelated to writing, or activate your mind by reading something.

If all else fails utilize writing prompts! They will get you writing, guaranteed.

What is Writing?

Writing is the representation of language in a textual medium through the use of a set of signs or symbols (known as a writing system). It is distinguished from illustration, such as cave drawing and painting, and the recording of language via a non-textual medium such as magnetic tape audio.

In Eurasia writing began as a consequence of the burgeoning needs of accounting. Around the 4th millennium BC, the complexity of trade and administration outgrew the power of memory, and writing became a more dependable method of recording and presenting transactions in a permanent form (Robinson, 2003, p. 36). In Mesoamerica writing may have evolved through calendrics and a political necessity for recording historical events.

How to Use Writing Prompts

Writing Prompts Pump Your Creative Juices!

So, you want to know how to use writing prompts? I cannot put it more simply than just write. Writing prompts will give you a queue to get you going, put an idea in your head. However, it's up to you to put those words on the paper, or computer screen.

There are other things you can do other than use static writing prompts to get your creative juices in gear.

Freewrite

Freewriting is method of writing where you just put ideas, words, and phrases on paper and link them somehow. This prompt is usually used to get you going. Once the flow is there you should muck out a writing topic from your efforts.

Brainstorm

Brainstorming is a method usually used by groups to generate topic. However, an individual can brainstorm on their own.

Brainstorming is a lot like freewriting. However, the ideas do not have to link or have any relation to one another.

When all else fails, write a review! Reviews are easy to write as they are the opinions you generate when you see, read, or use something. You never know, writing a review may make a great writing prompt!
