Writing - 5 Steps To Making More Sales
Rejections are frustrating for new writers as well as seasoned professionals. Rejections are simply a part of the writing life. We all get them. We all want more acceptances, but how do we go about getting them? Read on for ideas:
1. Write your best
This may seem like an obvious piece of advice, but most of us can probably say that we don't always write our best before we submit. Maybe it's a Friday night and we want to get out the door, so we decide not to edit. If you're in a rush like that, it's better to simply leave the work until you can edit it. Otherwise you're wasting your own precious time as a writer. You have to wait for it to be rejected or accepted. If it's rejected, you will need to do the editing you didn't do before and then resubmit it. Save yourself the time and trouble and write your best before submitting any piece.
2. Write what you love
Another idea that may seem obvious, but especially writers who are starting out may be all over the place. We want to try everything and show how diverse we can be. The problem is, if you try to write too much, you end up writing little of anything. Discover what you really enjoy writing and focus on those. If you're not into poetry, there is no reason you should be writing it. You don't have to achieve success in all areas of writing. Only the areas that interest you. This includes topics you write about too. Write about topics that interest you, not ones that don't. When you try to write about things that you have no interest in, there is a much greater chance you won't finish the piece at all or, if you do, it will turn out to not be your greatest work, because honestly, you just don't care that much.
3. Pick proper markets
Picking the perfect market is exceptionally important. Picking the wrong market is another waste of your time. You could wait up to six months simply to hear, "sorry, we don't publish this kind of work." Before you submit, read the guidelines of places that interest you and if possible read a few recent copies of the magazine itself. Check your local library or ask friends if they have copies of the magazine. You may also be able to ask for free copies of the magazine. If you need to buy a few, it's well worth the investment. The better you know the market you are submitting to, the higher your chances of acceptance become.
4. Make use of rights
When you sell a piece, that doesn't always mean it's completely off the market. Always know the rights that you are selling, because you can use the unsold right to make sales to other markets. Make your pieces work twice, even three times, as hard for you.
5. Always have pieces under consideration
The only way to get acceptances is to have pieces under consideration. When rejections come in, send them right back out again. When you finish a piece, send it out. If a piece gets rejected more than a few times, try editing the piece and sending it back out again.
Don't leave work sitting on your computer with no place to go.
