Creating quality articles for both web and print publications is probably the most lucrative of all writing occupations which is why writing for magazines continues to be one of the most popular forms of creative writing.

Unlike many other forms of writing, book publishing, for instance, it is quite easy to break into the magazine writing market and with a little determination, build a worthwhile career.

There are literally hundreds and hundreds of publications both on the web and in print hungry for quality content which is all ready being supplied by freelance writers so why not help your self to a share?

ARTICLE SUBMISSIONS

Preparing Article Submissions

Before you start dashing off your first missive, you should be familiar with the accepted way of offering article submissions to editors. Preparing articles for magazine submission is quite a lengthy topic and varies from situation to situation and really deserves an article in its own right.

Fortunately, the whole subject of article submissions is covered in Mags & Rags To Riches, writing magazine articles which sell. This is part of The Magnificent 7 suite of creative writing ebooks.

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

Where and how to find submission guidelines

Another problem you will face is that a fair number of magazines do not accept freelance contributions which can tie up a lot of your time in fruitless research. To avoid this you need to know your target publications submission guidelines..

The web has made this easier now. Just type in the name of the publication or the type of publication followed by submission guidelines for magazine articles. With a bit of luck Google will give you direct links to their submission guidelines page.

Of course you will still have to trawl through them to find the ones that actually pay for your work. If you'd rather someone else has done the leg work for you, join one of the excellent creative writing communities which carry good databases of magazine publishersand other outlets for articles

EDITORIAL CALENDAR

Editorial Calendars are worth their weight in gold helping you to get in before the opposition!

Another very useful tool which is often available, is the Editorial Calendar. Not all magazines publish these, but most will have compiled a listing of subjects to be covered, possibly up to the next 12 issues of their publication.

Some magazines will publish this on-line, but many more do not so if you can't find anything on the web, ask! This one piece of information will greatly increase your chances of making a sale as it will enable you to pitch or submit an article months before the issue concerned is due to be printed.

This gives you an enormous advantage over other writers who will be disappointed to find that your idea has all ready been accepted. It will also find you favour with editors who will appreciate having copy in well before their deadline.
