A quick overview of writing
I am a professional writer with a long history of publication in newspaper, magazine, book, and online formats.
I am a professional writing teacher and have National Writing Project training.
I believe anyone can learn to be a writer, but that learning to write is hard work that never really ends. I am still learning about writing and expect I will continue to do so my whole life.
Some key areas that writers need to think about at the beginning of a writing task are their purpose and audience. I teach my students about their author's agenda and discourse community to assist with this process. This should be done before writing actually begins.
It is also important for writers to develop an individual writing process to help make their writing more effective and more efficient. Another way to help writing is to literally write in your sleep.
A key part of improving writing skill is to study your writing through writing reflection or metawriting. Before, in the midst, and at the end of a writing task you should pause to reflect on the choices you made, the struggles you faced, and the success of your strategies. Only the use of this reflection will make you a better writer.
I also share other writing tips, strategies and resources here. Come check them out, ask questions, and share your own tips, too.
