US Navy in World War 2

This is a photo of the USS PCE 884 that my dad was on. This site has information about the US Navy in World War 2

I'm not an expert on this subject. It's something I was helping my dad with. Recently, he passed away and I am going to do what I can to continue with this project.

If you have information that would add to this subject, I would very much appreciate your contributions.

If you see something on this lens that is an error, please let me know.

Warmest regards,

Pat

Caught in Typhoon

"Although tattered in the course of one of the worse typhoons in the Navy's history, the Stars and Stripes of the Patrol Craft Escort, 884 are raised by these three sailors, one of whom is an Alabamian, James W. Reeves, left of Empire. The other seamen are James A. Thompson, Center, of Aberdeen, Miss., and the other is Thomas E. McNulty of San Francisco. The craft was caught off Okinowa and tossed around furiously but rode out the storm without casualty." (From the Birmingham News, Birmingham, Alabama)

Pacific Convoy from 12,000 Feet by Griffith Baily Coale #21

Thru Artist's Eyes

See more images like the one above by clicking the link below.

Seeing that historic events were unfolding in the rising tension of the "undeclared war" of the North Atlantic, New York muralist Griffith Baily Coale convinced Admiral C.W. Nimitz to send Navy artists into action to record military activities in ways that cameras and the written word could not. The Navy Combat Artist Program was approved and in August 1941 Coale became the Navy's first combat artist on active duty.

Eventually the Navy sent eight artists to serve in combat areas and record their impressions of the action. This small number produced over 1,300 drawings, watercolors, and paintings, which were used to illustrate books and magazines, and toured the country in exhibitions designed to inform and raise public morale. They documented a variety of actions in the European and Pacific theaters, including the Normandy invasion, campaigns in North Africa, and the invasion of Okinawa. Their art captures the experiences of war and the men and women who fought in it.
World War II Navy Art: A Vision of History
During World War II, the Navy implemented a combat art program of Navy personnel who were also artists. They were sent to serve in combat zones and to portray their experiences in art form.

You've created an awesome lens! Congratulations and thanks for the hard work. My Dad was in the Navy on an LST (Landing Ship-Tank) Pacific Theater for the duration of WWII. It was his travels during that time that eventually--25 years after the war--brought us to live on the Western Pacific Island of Guam. Living on Guam got me interested in Marine Biology (most of my lenses involve some kind of biology--including oceanic stuff) and Submarines. I now live near San Francisco--so it was a treat to see the USS Pampanito, a WWII Submarine and the USS Jeremiah O'Brian (a WWII Liberty Ship) at Pier 35 there. You've inspired me to write up something on my Dad's adventures in the Pacific (he was in a big Typhoon in the Pacific as well). Thanks so much for your inspiration!

Hello,

What a wonderful gift to carry on this lens. It must be very special to you! I actually am working on one about my father, he was a veteran of World War II and I've typed up his journal and some of his stories to share. I think it is so important to carry on the stories that they leave behind. Their lives so very important, we wouldn't be here today if it wasn't for America's veterans...God Bless them All!

One way to study, or honor naval history is through what is called Naval postal history.

I have both a web site and an eBay store where I sell hundreds of "Ship Covers" often as family memento's of someones past service.

Others collect fleets, hull types, and events such as the ships at Pearl.
