What would our charities do with $3,000?

The first step for each partner charity participating in our July 2009 $3,000 charity giveaway was to write in and tell us what they would do with $3,000.

We were REALLY excited to read the results. Our partner charities can be quiet, but when you ask them what they need, they'll tell you!

The projects these charities are working on are so effective, so efficient, so needed in our communities. Here are just a few things our charities would do with $3,000. Why not make a lens to support them? Just a few dollars a month from hundreds of lensmasters adds up fast, and could help charities complete all these projects and more.

Operation Helmet 

This donation would allow us to keep providing helmet pad upgrades to our fighting forces both in Iraq and Afghanistan, where the signature injury has become traumatic brain injury (TBI). They also make the helmet so comfortable that troops can ignore their head armor and concentrate on the deadly jobs at hand.

Epic Farms 

We are in the process of building new visitor-friendly stalls and petting/demonstration areas for our horses. In addition to finishing Phase One of our facilities, we will also need to purchase rather expensive liability insurance prior to allowing visitors on to the property.

Ferrets Unlimited 

We accept all ferrets that are surrendered to us regardless of their condition, including a recently high volume, and therefore we have large veterinary bills. Our entire staff and board are volunteers, so if we were to receive $3,000 we would send it to our vet to pay for the many vaccinations, exams, and surgeries that we send him each week.

Critter Camp 

We would use the winnings to both care for the over 240 rescued exotic pets here at critter Camp Exotic Pet Sanctuary and to help publicize our cause, as well as our proposed new "green" sanctuary building. We would possibly use some of the money to create a computerized "walk through" of the proposed facility to aid in our applying for funding for the building.

Big Cat Rescue 

If we had $3000.00 we would buy a golf cart for our summer campers. In addition to being inspirational and educational, our Big Cat Summer Camp is a big money maker for the cats. We have two paid staff members and volunteers who lead the camps, but our sanctuary is
spread out over 45 acres. A golf cart would speed up the transportation process and enable us to be able to provide better supervision and interactivity with the entire group.

This project will provide much-needed employment in Native Alaskan villages that are facing job loss and soaring heating fuel and food prices, resulting in urban migration. The Weatherization Training program will train youth still in high school how to conduct energy
efficient carpentry repairs on homes and businesses, while also providing information about Green Jobs available in Alaska in the energy and natural resource fields.

Born Free USA 

Our Sanctuary is home to more than 500 primates, most of whom have been rescued from research facilities, private possession or deplorable roadside zoos. They now live "as free as they can be" in large, multi-acre, free-range enclosures but, we are in desperate need of at least two additional "introduction" enclosures. Food for Everyone Foundation 

One hundred percent of the money would be used to produce a Gardening Training DVD that would be available to schools, churches, community groups, and families throughout the English-speaking world. The laws of plant growth will be taught simply and clearly, and principles and procedures will be made crystal clear, so that every person who watches and follows them can have their own highly productive sustainable garden. Most of the filming is already complete, but $3,000 is needed to accomplish final editing and production of the DVDs.

Hope for Henry 

Hope for Henry has a terrific program area where we throw birthday parties for kids with cancer and other life-threatening illnesses who are in the hospital on their special day. We decorate their room with their favorite kid-friendly themes (think SpongeBob, Batman, Disney princess, etc), send personalized cakes and balloons, and provide gifts and party bags for their siblings, favorite doctors or nurses or other guests. In short, we make sure that their illness doesn't get in the way of having a special celebration on a special day. An investment of $3,000 would enable us to expand this program to a new hospital partner, Children's National Medical Center, in our hometown of Washington, DC.

Dog Tags for Kids 

Our group provides dog tags at no charge for our active military parents overseas so that they have something to send home to their children. Our small group accepts no pay whatsoever being all volunteer and we have no huge administrative costs. In our case, the cost of each tag engraved and shipped costs about $.50. What that $3000 represents to us is approximately 6000 smiles for the kids left at home while mom or dad serves our country.

The Jackie Robinson Foundation 

We serve as an advocate for young people with the greatest needs, as we assist them through the granting of four-year scholarships for higher education, and more. Each Scholar receives up to $7,500 a year in direct support, plus participation in an extensive professional mentoring program. A Day of Hope

Dolphin Communication Project 

For starters, we'd stop confusing male dolphins with female dolphins. It sounds silly, but it can be rather challenging to make out the subtle markings on their underbellies that reveal their gender. We are desperately in need of a High Definition (HD) camera to replace the clunky camera currently in use in our underwater video housing. And if there's money left over, a solid-state audio recording device to record the high frequency clicks these dolphins use for echolocation. And more... As a small non-profit with limited funds, a $3,000 boost would go a very long way indeed!

BuckHawk Center Animal Rescue 

$3,000 would allow us to add multiple new dog yards to house 4-5 dogs each. This gives us the opportunity to help another local shelter in desperate need of finding a new location for many unadoptable dogs. We can remove them from cramped, temporary quarters, and allow the other shelter room to bring in more dogs that have greater adoptable appeal. Every dog wins!

Wild Animal Sanctuary 

If we received $3,000 we would use the money to continue the ongoing care of the 200 large exotic carnivores that currently live at the Sanctuary. We feed over 36,000 pounds of specially blended raw meat a month to the carnivores for $12,000. The $3,000 would cover a week of our meat bill, freeing the money for next week's bill or another expense to caring for these animals.
