WWJD: Fad or Compass For Life's Choices?

"What Would Jesus Do?" (WWJD) is a question that almost everyone is familiar with. Chances are you've seen this catchy phrase strung on lanyards, on a co-worker's coffee mug, on the bumper of the car in front of you, or even on "Bill Board's Top 200" chart (WWJD Album). What Would Jesus Do?How did these four letters become so popular, sparking a cultural revolution of sorts in the youth of America? Is this merely a fad spun by cunning retailers to sell "Christian paraphernalia," or does this question really have significance for the way we should live our lives?

What Would Jesus Do?
What Would Jesus Do? - WWJD? Fad or true compass for life's choices? The answer depends on whether you truly know Jesus. Find out today!

What DID Jesus Do?

In order to know what Jesus would do, we must know what He did do, right? Here are just five things Jesus did that we can model in our lives...
  • HUMILITY

Philippians 2:5-8 describes the extent of Jesus' humility: "Our attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus: who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient to death - even death on a cross!" God blesses those who show humility!

  • SERVICE

Matthew 20:28 says, "The Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many." Jesus is the ultimate example of a man who desired to serve others. He did tasks that were generally left to the servants, like washing feet. John 13:5 describes an event where Jesus served His disciples: "After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples' feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him." Is your life characterized by a servant's heart?

  • GLORIFY GOD

Jesus said, "Father, the time has come. Glorify your Son, that your Son may glorify you." Jesus came to earth to glorify His Father. Everything we do should be done to glorify the Father: 1 Corinthians 10:31 says, "So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God."

  • PRAYER

What a prayer life Jesus experienced! He was in constant communion with His Father and often got up early in the morning to talk with God. Mark 1:35 says, "Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed." Do you enjoy constant fellowship with God?

  • SACRIFICE

Jesus was the ultimate sacrifice! He gave His life so that we (sinful beings) can spend an eternity in heaven with Him. He provided His life - the ultimate sacrifice of His life - as a free gift to all who will believe! 1 John 2:2 says, "He [Jesus] is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world." When was the last time you sacrificed something for someone else. I'm not talking about animal sacrifices here, but the act of giving up something for God, a friend, or a complete stranger. God wants your sacrifice. Romans 12:1 says, "Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God-this is your spiritual act of worship."

How This All Came About

What Would Jesus Do?

"What Would Jesus Do?" all started with a youth group from the Calvary Reformed Church of Holland, Michigan. As members of "Generation X," (referring to the 90's) they wanted to influence their community for Christ. Inspired by the 1896 Charles Sheldon Book, "In His Steps." (which asked the same query), these youths were moved to apply this question to the daily choices that they all faced. FACT:
The term WWJD was inspired by the 1896 Charles Sheldon Book, "In His Steps."
As a tangible reminder, they had simple cloth bracelets made that used the abbreviation, WWJD. The bracelets caught the attention of friends, classmates, parents, and town's people. Soon, almost everyone was wearing one of these bracelets. As their popularity grew, the bracelets were mass-marketed, causing the retail revolution that we see today.

To the youths of Calvary Reformed Church in Michigan, "What Would Jesus Do?" had nothing to do with fad, popularity or wealth. They asked this question because their lives had been transformed by what Jesus taught and did about 2,000 years ago. They desired to influence their community by living their lives the way Christ taught. They wanted to give their faith a tangible connection to their everyday lives.

The Answer Depends on Whether We Know Jesus

What Would Jesus Do?

"Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with Me."

Before we can ask the question "What would Jesus do?" we must ask ourselves whether we know Jesus. Knowing Jesus begins with reading about His life, teachings and claims in the Bible. However, reading the Bible as literature alone only helps us to learn ABOUT Jesus. To truly KNOW Him requires a personal, spiritual relationship with Him.

Let's Make the Question Truly Relevant!

What Would Jesus Do?

Before asking, "What Would Jesus Do?" we must truly ask, "Who is Jesus?" Is Jesus merely a historical figure -- a good man, a teacher, or a prophet? Or is He God incarnate who came to earth about 2,000 years ago to die for the sins of all mankind? Jesus Himself asked His disciples this very same question. Why? Because He knew that what they believed about Him would have a significant bearing on how they would live their lives for Him (see Matthew 16:13-17). Likewise, if we believe Jesus for who He claims to be (God incarnate -- John 1:1-3) and for what He did on Earth (died for our sins -- John 3:16), then we can truly accept Him as our Lord and Savior. He will then come into our life and reveal Himself to us in Spirit, allowing us to genuinely ask the question "What would Jesus do?"

"What would Jesus do?" is an irrelevant question for many people because they don't know who Jesus is. "What would Jesus do?" is an irrelevant question for many people because they don't know who Jesus is. They wear the four letters (WWJD) on their T-shirts or wristbands without truly learning about the life and teaching of Jesus, and make life's choices based on what they - themselves -- THINK Jesus should do. The question "What would Jesus do?" is powerful and life-changing only for those who truly know Jesus and have surrendered their lives to Him. Learn about Jesus and pursue a life-changing relationship with Him that will bring everlasting joy, peace and purpose into your life!

The little catch phrase "what would Jesus do"? implies the past tense...I prefer to ask myself "what is Jesus doing"Jesus is right here folks He lives in the heart of Jeff and Jeanine and so many of the folks that see through their lenses.I'd be more concerned about when the Holy Spirit departs and you don't get to read anymore from Whit and Jeff.......Rapture.....Can you imagine 7 years of pure Hell on Earth...the latter half worse than the first.....I would strongly suggest that you read all of the words that you see in these lenses....If Jesus were here he would weep once again........would He sacrifice Himself again I don't think so...once was enough...take it or leave it it's your choice.....God didn't create robots that ask what would Jesus do ? He created you.......... what are you doing?............to steal a line from "twitter" Get your dusty musty old bible out and, read again the words of Jesus then you won't have to ask your self what would Jesus do.... Jesus is coming back
