Wymondham College Past & Present
Opening in 1951, Wymondham College was built on the site of a WW2 USAAF 213st Statio Hospital. When Wymondham College first opened, the hospital's Nissen huts were used as classrooms and domitories.
It wasn't until the end of the 1990s when the Nissen huts were finally put out of use, being replaced by brick-built accommodation which had been continually added since the late 1950s.
The college chapel is the only only remaining Nissen hut, after the last two that had been used for storage were demolished.
Wymondham College also erected a memorial garden, on the site of the former mortuary, which previously had been used as a technical drawing classroom.
When Wymondham College opened, there were two separate schools, Grammer and Technical, each with separate heads. After an uneasy co-existance, these two schools merged in the mid 1950s.
The school held its "boarding" status until the beginning of the 1970s, when it was merged with the County Grammer School, which had been previously hosted at Wymondham College for ten years, on a originally planned, temporary basis.
Currently, a £9.6million development is underway. This development will include an AstroTurf football, floodlit football pitch, 9 new classooms, 2 science labs, as well as a dining room extension which will include a new staff room and admin block. Once the staff room and admin block have been moved, Peel House will expand and the new 6th Form centre will be added to the current boarding house.
