Discover the Beautiful, Smooth Trumpet of Wynton Marsalis

Jazz trumpeter, composer, and even author Wynton Marsalis has been wowing audiences with his style and creativity since he began performing with the New Orleans Philharmonic at the tender age of 14. At the same time, he played trumpet in a funk band, just to be able to play the trumpet in front of more people.

On this lens, I'll write about why I love Wynton Marsalis's music, how I came to love the sound of the trumpet, give album recommendations, and ask for your feedback on jazz, classical music, Mr. Marsalis, and the instruments and musical styles that you love. If you have questions, feel like I've missed something, or have your own story to share, please jump down to the guest book and type away. I look forward to hearfing from you!

Why I Love Wynton Marsalis

Or, How the Trumpet Won Me Over

As a saxaphone player many years ago (about 20, now), I enjoyed listening to Branford Marsalis, Wynton Marsalis's brother, and his jazz compositions. Somewhere along the line, I discovered that the Marsalis family was filled with musicians. Younger brothers Delfeayo Marsalis, a trombonist, and Jason Marsalis, a drummer, have carved out their own niches and the men are four of the six sons of Ellis Marsalis, a well-known jazz pianist.

In looking for recordings of Branford Marsalis, I came upon a quartet in which he performed, led by Wynton. After one listen, I knew that I had to search out more of the trupet player's work. The smooth, clear sound of his horn immediately drew me into the music. I've added below the first album I purchased, and one which I still recommend highly.

Once I started listening to Wynton Marsalis play the trumpet, I realized that jazz does not require a saxaphone to lead. The trupet sounded, if possible, even more expressive and nimble than my beloved horn. I still love the sound of a saxaphone, well-played, but the trumpet has come to symbolize the clarity of emotion that you find in well-written and passionately-performed jazz.

If you'd like a sample of your own, you can download an entire album, Here and Now, for free from Wynton Marsalis's web site, for a taste of his original style. In fact, the web site contains an amazing amount of information, including a detailed discography that includes the track listing and liner notes for each album as well as many song previews. It's a terrific resource for information direct from the horse's mouth, so to speak.

Blue Interlude: A Jazz Love Story

From the Wynton Marsalis Septet

Blue Interlude

Amazon Price: $5.76 (as of 02/17/2012)Buy Now

The love story of Sugar Cane and Sweetie Pie, as told and played by Wynton Marsalis and six other talented jazz musicians. This is the last album the Septet played together, and the first that was a single, extended composition. Marsalis's classical training shows, in the way the story passes through movements and recurring themes rather than being comprised of individual songs. All in all, it's a lovely recording.

Wynton Marsalis's "Standard Time" Series

Jazz Standards, Reimagined for Today

While the first disc ranks as my personal favorite of this series, all of them are filled with beautiful improvisation and pure jazz. There's a sixth disk in the series, as well, but I can only put five on here at a time. The last is called "Mr. Jelly Lord" and the songs cover many of Jelly Roll Morton's most famous stomps and blues songs.

Jazz Isn't All that Wynton Marsalis Plays

Swing, Blues, and Classical Round Out His Repertoire

While jazz remains the forte of Wynton Marsalis, and the passion he most often indulges, he is a classically-trained trumpet and cornet player. He plays with skill and ingenuity, no matter the style. He's become a composer of some renown as well as being a strong voice for arts education and support.

A quick glance at some of the DVDs that feature Wynton Marsalis reveals this wide range of talent. Not only can you get the performance he put on with Willie Nelson at Lincoln Center (see below), but you can watch the two masters perform and discuss their love of Ray Charles. You can enjoy more wonderful standards on the Great Performances, "Blues & Swing", which stands as a tribute to the wonderful music from which Marsalis draws inspiration.

Two Men With The Blues

Of the many performances Wynton Marsalis has given at the Lincoln Center, none so clearly displays his love of music and of performing as this one, with Willie Nelson. The two demonstrate their passion for the blues and each of their individual talents compliment the other's. Truly, Two Men with the Blues is a joy to hear.

Wynton and Willie: Here We Go Again

A Tribute to Ray Charles

Wynton Marsalis, as artistic director at the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, invited the wonderful Willie Nelson and the velvet-voiced Norah Jones to join him on-stage for a two-day tribute to the music of Ray Charles. The album for this celebration, titled "Here We Go Again", was released in March, 2011. As an added bonus, the titles of each track specifies the style, whether boogaloo or gospel 12/8 shuffle or bolero with habanera bass. It's like a tiny little master course in so many ways.

As if "Two Men with the Blues" wasn't demonstration enough that Wynton Marsalis and Willie Nelson belong together, this album shows that classic blues standards aren't the only place their musical talents overlap. Throw in Norah Jones on numbers like Hit the Road, Jack, Hallelujah I Love Her So, and What'd I Say and you up the joy quotient without distracting from the quality of the band's performance.

Wynton Marsalis Excels at That, Too.

As a classically trained trumpet player, Wynton Marsalis not only doodles around with jazz but displays his technical expertise and smooth style on these classical albums, as well. You can find several more (about a dozen), but these are the ones I most enjoy.
