Is Wyotech a good deal?

Lots of prospective Wyotech students and their families want to know if Wyotech tech school is worth the money.

It costs a lot: $19,350 for the automotive technology program. Housing is extra.

There are other programs including diesel technology, collision repair, upholstery, motorcycle technology, and marine. There are also specialties like auto service management, high performance powertrain, and light duty diesel.

I'm putting together this resource page for any student or parent out there who needs to find out more about Wyotech. Everything I learn about Wyotech will be posted to this page.

This lens was first published in June 2009. Please keep in mind that I'm the parent of a prospective student and not in any other way associated in an official capacity with this school. I was doing research on the school for my own purposes and decided to compile and share what I found on this web page.

A few personal observations about Wyotech Tech School

...my personal pros and cons...

I'm the mother of a teenager who enrolled at Wyotech. Within days his teacher started objecting because there were concerns that his special ed needs might not be met as nothing was written into the contract to guarantee them. He decided not to attend at this time, but may decide do so later. Right now he's going to go to the community college for a few semesters to learn better reading skills and take part in the much less expensive automotive training program there.

We still believe that Wyotech offers a good automotive tech training program for motivated students. There will always be some unhappy students -- either because they are just predisposed to complaining all the time, or because they can't abide by the rules and get in trouble because of it.

I've asked automotive business owners about Wyotech as a means of getting into the industry, and they all without exception told me Wyotech would be a good choice for my son. It seems there's plenty of support and respect for Wyotech amongst employers.

The main drawback is the fee, of course. It was much more than I could consider co-signing on at this time and I was told that until my son is 24 or married I'd be financially responsible for his education. This too played a big part in our change of heart. We had to cancel the contract because I couldn't put my signature to it.

I started doing all this research about Wyotech since my son really wanted to attend. Since I'd already gathered a lot of resources on the web, I decided to put what I'd learned on this lens for others who walk this path behind me.

A Wyotech automotive technology class

...so what is Wyotech REALLY like?

There's not much happening in this video but you get to see the students working in the shop and can see what it is like to be a student there.

powered by Youtube

Wyotech - Pros

(Why you might want to go there.)

  1. Good tech school education. Many former students are grateful for all they learned there.

  2. Decent, air-conditioned facilities in which to learn.

  3. Former students say that you get from it what you put into it. Serious students will be able to learn and benefit from the program.

  4. Help with job referrals and applications/resumés.

Wyotech - Cons

(Why you might not want to go there.)

  1. Very, very expensive - and you will probably end up owing money. Lots of it...

  2. Some students are unable to find jobs after leaving Wyotech. There's no guarantee of a job though many former Wyotech students have found good jobs and are working in the automotive field.

  3. Some students are not seriously motivated to learn.

  4. Some students resent the dress code which prohibits long hair on men.
