Wyvern! The Movie

Ancient Evil has come to feed!

In the small Alaskan town of Beaver Mills preparations are underway for the annual celebration of the Summer Solstice but, amidst the festivities, a horror is unleashed. A Wyvern awakes from its prison of ice.

The ravaging Wyvern goes on a bloody rampage as the townsfolk try desperately to escape.

This movie should be dismal. Curiously, it's very good. Surely a dragon swooping from the heavens, dropping a mutilated moose in a hot tub, ripping open cars like sardine cans and leaving bits and pieces of human anatomy left, right and centre is a bit over the top? No, what saves it is low-key acting, fabulous CGI and the Alaskan landscape.

You'll find plenty of references to Northern Exposure in Wyvern too. Including some of the actors.

Don S. Davis and Tinsel Korey keep a wary watch on the sky for the Wyvern.

Don S. Davis

This is the final movie made by actor Don S. Davis.

Davis has a portfolio of military characters. You may remember his role as General George S. Hammond in Stargate SG-1, but I remember him best for playing Major Garland Briggs in another TV series, Twin Peaks.

In Wyvern, Davis is Colonel Travis Sherman, a Vietnam Veteran who spurs the townsfolk to actively seek-and-destroy the dragon. He's understandably irate as his dog has disappeared (presumably to the wyvern) and it's his hot tub that's desecrated by the moose carcass.

Watch these two ..

Barry Corbin reveals the mythology of the Wyvern

Barry Corbin plays Haas, a bear-skin wearing hunter who first sights the Wyvern and lives to tell the tale.

It's Haas who tells the townsfolk that the predator is a Norwegian monster, once owned by Hel, goddess of the underworld and sister of a dragon who kept the beast to eat the bodies of evil men. But the Wyvern became uncontrollable, and was condemned by Odin AllFather to be imprisoned under the icecap.

Global warming, of course, has freed the evil monster from the ice!

Not a bad pseudo-explanation as movies go, although there are no wyverns, wyrms or other Latin-based beasts in Norse mythology. The northern myths have a drek, from which we get our word dragon.

Elaine Miles

The wonderful Elaine Miles puts in a laid back performance as Deputy Susie Barnes. Pretty much the same consistently calm demeanour that we saw in Northern Exposure. I ran the DVD back a few chapters so that I could watch her opening scenes again.

Miles is a delightful addition to the movie, she sits naturally in the landscape and it's her style that sets the standard for the other characters. You certainly won't find histrionics in Wyvern. No helpless damsels in distress either - they're all good shots up in Beaver Mills.

It's worth mentioning that Miles was chosen Native American Woman of the Year in 1993, and America's Celebrity Indian of the Year in 1995

Did I mention fabulous CGI?

Fabulous soundtrack too

The Wyvern makes her (yes, she's female) presence felt in the small town cafe.

Floating toward Beaver Mills, Alaska, is a glacier-an icy tomb for a prehistoric winged creature. Once released, it turns the small community into a feeding ground sending helpless residents into a fight for their lives. With time running out, trucker Jake Suttner sees only one option: steal the creature's egg from its nest and use it as bait in a trap. But beware - the Wyvern is one angry mother.

What I thought of Wyvern

Wyvern is surprisingly good!

I know that you won't be be terribly surprised when I reveal that it all ends well. A very low key hero of few words, Jake Suttner (Nick Chinlund), saves the day, defeats the Wyvern and gets the small town girl.
