Kinect, the Future of Gaming?

The Xbox 360 Kinect may represent the next video gaming milestone. But the real question is how does it work and what can it bring to gaming? The Kinect consists mainly of a horizontal sensor bar which consists of a camera, depth sensor and a microphone. The depth sensor has the ability to see the environment in 3D and the sensor coupled with exclusive software is capable of exceptional facial and gesture recognition. The camera can track in space up to 20 joints of a particular player and can even track the position of someone's fingers in 3 dimensional space.

Microsoft, in one of their demo sessions, demonstrated someone playing a driving simulation game. While playing, the Kinect sensor was able to accurately read the hand gestures of the person as they mimicked the act of steering a car and shifting gears without the use any game peripherals. In another demo the player participated in a dodge ball type game where they had to hit oncoming balls with their hands and feet. The Kinect camera was able to track the players arms, legs, hands and feet accurately in 3 dimensional space and translate them to the on screen character.

The built in Kinect microphone adds another layer of depth to Kinect. The microphone will allow for hands free cross game chat and an immersive gaming experience. One game that was demonstrated by Microsoft was called Kinectimals. In the game players are asked to create an animal friend from one of five exotic species. The player can then interact with their newly created pet and even talk and give commands to them using Kinect.

What we've seen of Kinect so far is just the tip of the ice berg. If game developers can truly embrace its capabilities then we may see some truly astonishing games in the future.

With a swipe of their hand they were able to use Kinect to navigate through on screen menus much like Tom Cruise did in Minority Report. The reviewer was also pleased with the precision of the Kinect system and even mentioned it felt more accurate than many of the current wii games on the market. The voice recognition also received high praise.
