How an Xbox 360 Repair Guide Fixed the Red Ring of Death on My Console

There are too many methods on the internet claiming to have the solution to the Red Ring of Death that it makes it extremely difficult for the Xbox 360 owner, to just find something reliable and legit. Once my console got the Red Ring I searched all over the internet to try and find out why, and how I could fix it.

I'm the type of person where if something goes wrong I want to know why and what I can do. I immediately found tons of different methods, especially on YouTube, claiming to all have the solution. But with many of these methods there were undesirable 'consequences'. The Towel Method for example, while it may give a 'temporary' solution, if done improperly could permanently damage your console. There was no way I was about to test my luck with that. It wasn't until I found The Xbox 360 Red Light Fix Pro Gamer Edition - an Xbox 360 Repair Guide - that things started to make sense.

See many people might say, 'why didn't you just send it into Microsoft - they'll fix your console?', but there is a huge problem with that. My console was no longer under warranty. And that means you need to pay over $140 just to send your console in. And aside from that, there are countless cases all over the internet from disappointed customers who sent their system in and got it back un-repaired. In other words the Red Ring of Death came back. So what would have happened if I forked out that service fee and then got my console not repaired? Wasn't about to take the chance. So my only solution was to fix my system myself.

Once I had found this Xbox 360 repair guide I was pretty skeptical. Although it looked very professional I just couldn't be sure. But out of desperation I really had no other alternative - and if it didn't work I could have just got my money back. But once I was able to see the guide itself I was almost positive that this was it! Everything it showed - the red ring of death repair process - made absolute sense. And what was ironic is how big this 'Red Ring of Death' problem is, how big of a deal many people make out of it, when the repair shown in this guide was so SIMPLE! And that's probably why it worked - because it WAS simple.

The Cause of the RROD

To put it simply, the Xbox 360 suffers from overheating problems. This affects two internal components known as the Graphics Processing Unit (GPU), Central Processing Unit (CPU) and the Heat Sinks. The GPU and CPU are two computer chips that sit on the motherboard that allow the 360 to run itself. The Heat Sinks are designed to filter out heat from reaching the GPU and CPU to allow them to run properly.

The GPU and CPU effectively have two forms of protection; a thermal paste used to prevent direct heat exposure and the heat sinks to filter out heat and keep these chips cool. Both of these forms of protection fail. The problem here is that the heat sinks get thrown off balance when the 360 overheats. When this happens the GPU and CPU become exposed to the heat in the console.

The GPU and CPU's thermal paste is inefficient and was not designed to withstand the heat created by the console. And since the GPU and CPU's thermal paste is insufficient, the two computer chips get direct heat exposure which shuts the console down, giving you the RROD.

How to Repair the RROD

Now, in order to repair this problem two things needs to be done. First the GPU and CPU need reinforced protection. This is done by applying a more sufficient thermal compound paste that will be able to withstand the heat from the 360 thereby properly protecting the GPU and CPU from overheating.

Next the heat sinks need to be adjusted so that they cannot get be thrown off balance. This is actually a very simple repair and you will be shown in the guide that by using a set of specific washers and screws you can create a foundation for the heat sinks to sit that is more stable. This new foundation will ensure that the heat sinks cannot be thrown off balance so they properly protect and filter heat from reaching the GPU and CPU.

Once the repair has been completed you will then need to reassemble your console. This part is easy and there is another video that walks you through the entire process so it's no big deal. After that just plug your console in and hit the power button.

I know that once I finished with my console I was pretty nervous but anxious to see if the repair would work or not. After all it was either this or fork out that $140 service fee for Microsoft which I really didn't want to have to do and hope they would repair my console. So I closed my eyes, hit the power button and hoped for the best. Sure enough I heard the Xbox 360 start up screen and opened my eyes and saw the green lights circling the power button. I couldn't have been more relieved that my console was fixed.
