1. It's The DVD's Fault!
X-Box Repair FAQ for the First-Time Owner
Read on and see if there's still a chance for your X-box to benefit from a little DIY tinkering. It's the DVD's fault!
Having the Dirty Disc Error isn't the only instance that your DVD could be at fault. If your games end up freezing then you could blame that on your DVD as well.
Your first instinct may be to get a new replacement drive and yes, that's the simplest thing to do but it's also going to cost you money. If you can't afford changing just yet then here's what you can do. Start with your typical DVD cleaner. This can be used for cleaning the lens. Once you're done, try rebooting your X-Box and see if there's any improvement.
Take out your manual and whatever tutorial you can find to see what else you can do that the manufacturer has approved of. If that still doesn't work then consider cleaning the lens of your DVD drive manually. Be careful not to exert too much pressure or scratch its surface or that will truly be the end of your X-Box. Try adjusting the potentiometer as well.
Now, if replacement is the only way to save your X-box then go ahead but this time, do invest in a high-quality DVD drive so you won't have to go through the same thing in the future.
Another possible problem with DVD drives is its inability to play certain games. Most cases, this is simply due to the media used.
Some games use DVD while others are on CD. Although CDs are easier to read, DVDs have better quality and resistance to scratches and other kinds of harm. Make sure that your DVD drive is truly capable of reading whatever media your game is stored in.
Lastly, are you experiencing difficulties with opening and closing your DVD drive? If so, try realigning the tray first. A lot of people overlook this possibility and immediately jump to unnecessarily expensive solutions.
Xbox Errors and Error Codes
Other Possible Error Codes You'll Encounter with Your XBox
Xbox Troubleshooting
- One of the most troublesome errors you'll encounter is the "Call Customer Service with No Error Number".
When this one crops up, it simply means that the error is part of the list of errors your X-Box recognizes; it just doesn't know which one is it. - Bootldr errors may have to do something with your X-Box's motherboard, HDD, or RAM. Kernel errors, on the other hand, may have something to do with the HDD as well. If not that, it could be a problem with the DVD or dashboard.
- The AV cable cannot be detected or is disconnected.
1. Check and ensure that the AV cable is securely connected to the Xbox 360 console. Check for loose or ill-fitting connections. Remove the AV cable from the Xbox 360 console and then reconnect it to the Xbox 360 console (this is called "resocketing" the cable).
2. If the four flashing red lights continue to flash, remove the AV cable, turn off the xbox, and wipe the cable ends thoroughly with a dry, non-static cloth.
3. If the AV cable is correctly connected but the LEDs are still flashing, replace the cable with a different AV cable if you have one available. - The Xbox360 is Overheating. Overheating can be caused by the console locking up or "freezing" after a set amount of time. Lockups at a specific point in a game are not caused by overheating.
1. Turn off the Xbox 360 and let the console cool for several hours. Do not power on the console while it is still hot.
2. Make sure that the console is ventilated and that the fan is working.
To prevent this problem, use the following suggestions:
Do not block any vents on the Xbox 360.
Do not place the Xbox 360 on any soft surface that may block ventilation openings, like sofas.
Do not put the Xbox 360 in a enclosed space, such as a bookcase, a rack, or a stereo cabinet, except if the space has good circulation.
Do not put the Xbox 360 near heat sources, like space heaters, a stove, a computer or an amplifier.
Allow for a clearance of 3-5 inches on all sides of the xbox 360, and organize the cables on the back of the xbox 360 so that they are not cluttered and/or impede airflow around the unit. - Error Code E64 - E65: DVD Drive Error. DVD Timeout (the dvd is wobbling too strongly or the drive is reading too slow), Wrong firmware, dvd is without f/w chip, etc. This may also be caused by the DVD tray not being fully closed on boot.
- Error Code E66: DVD Drive Error: The DVD model or version does not match the version expected by the dashboard, or the firmware version on the drive is older then the firmware version expected by the dashboard. Check if the drive is the same version with the drive originally included with the console and that it is using either the original firmware included with the console or newer.
- Error Code E67 E68 E69 E79: Hard Drive Error. It could be a problem with the Hard Drive or a problem with the internal connection to the hard drive. Other possibilities include an Eprom Error with the drive, or a problem with the fans. Try removing the hard drive.
- Error Code E73: General Hardware Error: Ethernet port. This error is caused by a problem with the Ethernet port - bent pins, loose connections, hairline fractures, short circuits due to condensation etc. Bring the unit in for service.
