- Very comprehensive guide, if I can just suggest an alternative method for people to try before opening up the console. As your fix suggests the error is a result of overheating, so an easy option is to unplug the console from the power cable and also to unplug the power cable from the wall. This will allow your Xbox 360 the chance to cool its components, this fix has worked for me on every occasion that either I or one of my friends has had this issue. If the problem still persists after this attempted fix then by all means go ahead with James's fix. Thanks for the guide

- Great guide man...Im a qualified electronics technician by trade, and the only other thing i can recommend to anyone trying this (or working with any other piece of electronics) is open the xbox on a static free mat, and use a grounded wrist band (this can be a piece wire wrapped around your wrist that is grounded in some shape or form), or atleast touch some other metal device before touching the circuit board. The reason for this is because when we move our body builds up a static charge which can be anything between 1-100000 Volts depending on your clothing. You may notice sometimes if you touch something after walking on carpet you get zapped. This is the voltage discharging from your body. A lot of components on the xbox board (ESPECIALLY THE GPU AND CPU, the parts you are cleaning) can be quite easily damaged by one of these zaps (they can handle not much over 5 volts), and once that happens you have to get a new one, which means buying a whole new xbox, because i doubt microsoft will just sell you the chip on its own. A wristband and static mat discharges this voltage to ground, before it can reach the chips.
This could be a reason why some peoples consoles still dont work after they try repairing them

- dunno if the problem I assumed in the RRoD was something else but as I followed it doesn't seem to be working although when I removed the old thermal paste it might seem that the chip might of been damage because it seemed a little scratched on the surface and this was a Refurbished xbox from Gamestop and it looks like whoever had refurbished it had done a bit of a poor job of replacing the thermal paste.

- I got the 3 red rings last night on my 4 year old Xbox 360, when I started to load a game, it made a noise and then went black, I turned it off and on again, an lo, 3 flashing red lights. I usually have it on HDMI cable, I plugged it into AV and it went into the xbox dashboard, no red lights, I put a game in, crashed again and now it flashes two red lights which won't turn off, wouldn't let me turn it back off, it turned off by itself, but the 2 red lights are still flashing in standby. Weird??? So what is the problem, is it now an overheating problem, is it still the GPU or CPU? The fans are both working. I restarted it again on AV TV, and its come up with a message about overheating. Stays on a few minutes before turning off with overheating signal again. BTW my xbox is all opened up. Oh and I found out the error code is 0102.

Then it works for a while but then i tried removing the heatsink and stripping all thermal paste with alcohol and applying it all again and this has worked. I cant believe Microsoft get away with this everybody i know with a xbox has had a problem its not 1 in 3 like they claim. Redamdiculous.

- You didn't use washer like the guide said and you wonder why it didn't work??? seriously?
Use the washers to keep the heat sinks the correct distance from the cpu and gpu. no washers means you are squishing the heat sink down on the dye with no room for thermal compound

- Can I tell you about my problem which is similar but maybe more serious? When I start my xbox 360, the fan noise gets higher and higher.. and then suddenly it shuts down itself and shows me 2 red lights, I know it's some kind of RROD, so I went to the store, bought thermal compound and some clean water which can clean the old compound + screws and some washers.. I removed the old compound, put new thermal compound.. I tried the x-clamps.. but it's still not working.. I checked the error code and it says 0013 , e07 = RAM OVERHEATING. I don't know what I can do, so I am looking for help.. I have no warranty since I have been opening my xbox for a couple of times.. so could anyone here help me please?

Just helping out.
Oct 10, 2011 @ 12:01 pm | delete
- Usually two flashing red lights is a overheating problem, Sometimes the solution can be as simple as buying a bottle of compressed air and spraying it into the fan's around the xbox to clean the dust out of it. Or the easier version of just blowing into all of the fan's but keep your eyes closed to protect from dust... I learned that the hard way. I recently had this problem too but just blow into your xbox's fans and you should be fine. Also just move your xbox to a cooler position, so dont put it into direct sunlight. If none of this fixes youre issue you might have to purchase a new console. Hope I helped!

- White paste is fine, silver is just better at transferring heat.
You'll probably find that with some fiddling about with the screw tension on the heatsink, it'll come good. Most probably a cracked joint

- Try this guy. I payed 29.95 with a 60 day money-back guarantee. It takes about 3 hours to fix and he goes through, step by step, with you until the end. Any of these problems he can fix. And if he can't...well, you'll get your money back no questions asked.

- Hi Josh, well what you do first is stop making up words like 'irrefixable', then realise that if you are too stupid to be able to put something back together again then you probably shouldn't be taking it apart!!!

- some kind of plastic scraper and you can use isopropyl alcohol with a lint free cloth to clean the underside of the heat sink.

- Do you do the same thing if there are no red rings, the video freezes, and there is one green ring when the controller connects initially? Is this similar to the 3 ring (general hardware failure) death?

- one green ring is normal. if it freezes, that means you are about to get the red ring

- Hey, I didn't get to watch the videos so I don't know if you (or any of the posts) suggested this. After the reassemble, power on the system and let it sit for 10-20 min. to allow the bond to heat and set. The 3 red lights will be on, but you know it's done when one turns to yellow. Also, I think using rubber washers instead of nylon would be better. My dad designs and builds motherboards/processors and he suggests that the rubber has more give and is more forgiving on the board when screwed down tight. Nylon is a little more rigid so some sasquatch with a screwdriver could still crack/warp the board. Just a thought...that's what I used, although it wouldn't be a notable difference. Thanks for the article!

- I have fixed the 3 Ring issue, however, now when i load a game, it won't load completely. I have to shut my xbox down and start it back up again. The dashboard works fine, just loading games.

- Hi John,
You don't have any other option rather than opening it. If you are confused about the process the refer videos to get clear idea.
Its always a wise decision to take help of pro guy. And James Dean is NO. 1 when it comes to xbox repair.

- Despite what the lazy, know-it-all teenagers say (and it was suggested to me), never, NEVER, ever, ever, ever, wrap it in towels and overheat it. This is the most retarded, uneducated, and apathetic attempt at a "fix". It can fry your system and it will be rendered irrepairable. Basically what you have to do is go in and fix Microsloth's design flaw. Your system will be better for it. So, no, there is no other way...you have to open it.

- A couple of days ago, I was playing Halo 3, when the next day, I randomly found the 3 flashing lights. Why did this suddenly happen to me? (Btw, I've had my Xbox for 4-5 years, and the warranty doesn't apply.)

- I dont have a 360 so i dont get these problems.
If microsoft still make new versions of the 360 console, shouldnt they have sorted this program by now? Even the newest version seems to have these errors....
Just proves Microsoft dont care about consumers, they just care about sales figures!
