Always remove your disk before shutting off your console and if possible use multiple fans pointed at your xbox 360. This will ensure maximum cooling.

I used one method to really prevent it while playing lay the xbox 360 dvd style and put a electric fan on the other end opposite side of the console not where the hardrive is and turn it on it will make your 360 cool for hours doesnt matter how long you play.
