How Xena Got Her Start
Xena on DVD
Xena: Warrior Princess: Season One
Season 1 is worth having to see how it all started out. It's interesting to watch Lucy Lawless and Renee O'Connor settle into their new characters and lay the groundwork for the seasons to come. In Season 1, we are introduced to Joxer, Callisto, Ares and a whole host of other characters who figure so prominently in the series. Perhaps best of all, for the first time we get to hear Xena say her now famous line: "I have many skills." Why yes, you do.
Xena Warrior Princess - Season Two
In Season 2, the series seemed to really find its legs. By this point, the producers and actors were playing up the subtext thing so we get fan-favorite episodes such The Quest, where Xena & Gabrielle share a kiss (kinda) and A Day in the Life, a hilarious look at our two heroines as they squabble over frying pans, play 20 questions to while away the time and hot tub together. Other highlights from the season: The Xena Scrolls and Here She Comes...Miss Amphipolis.
Xena Warrior Princess - Season Three
An excellent season, probably my second favorite of them all, with intense storylines and eloquent character development. We have the fantastic two-part The Debt episode that plays like a feature movie with gorgeous scenery, amazing costumes, great writing and stellar acting. I love how it fills in so much back story for Xena's character. We also have the Rift (yes, it needs a capital R -- this was serious, folks!) between Xena & Gabrielle that was finally resolved in the musical episode The Bitter Suite, capably scored by Joseph Lo Duca. Other highlights: the very funny Been There, Done That; the sly Warrior...Priestess...Tramp with Lucy Lawless in a laugh-out-loud performance as a virgin priestess named Leah; and the unforgettable and dramatic One Against Army. Oh, and did I forget to mention the cliffhanger (um, literally) season finale?
Xena Warrior Princess - Season Four
Season 4 takes the characters in new directions with Gabrielle questioning the warrior life she lives with Xena and seeking alternatives. The first time I watched this season I found Gabrielle's quest a little tedious but re-watching all the episodes a few years later, I appreciate the way the writers took us through the character's evolution. There are many solid episodes to watch here. Highlights: the comedic In Sickness and In Hell; the touching struggle of Xena to let Gabrielle go in Crusader; and the high drama of Between The Lines, which takes place in India.
Xena Warrior Princess - Season Five
In Season 5, the series seems to veer off track a little and suffers with some so-so episodes (Married with Fishsticks, anyone?). Even so, the photography is getting really good throughout this season and marks the beginning of a new, lusher look. Gabrielle has really come into her own as a strong character and the 5th season explores her continued evolution into a warrior. Highlights: the musical Lyre, Lyre Hearts on Fire with Ted Raimi's hilarious turn as Joxer's flamboyant brother Jace; the beautifully shot Antony and Cleopatra that sizzled with on-screen chemistry.
Xena Warrior Princess - Season Six
My favorite season jam-packed with many of my all-time favorite eps, Season 6 is filled with good comedies, fantastic dramas and lush visualizations. Highlights: the fun and romantic Many Happy Returns that centers around a birthday surprise for Gabrielle; the amazing Rheingold trilogy that takes our heroines to the Norse lands; the wacky humor of You Are There where the modern day meets ancient Greece; the beautiful and touching When Fates Collide. If I could only own one season (what a horrible fate!), it would be this one.
Xena: Warrior Princess: Series Finale
I've watched the audio commentary on this director's cut, and the video commentary on this episode on the Season 6 DVD. I believe they're different and I like this one better -- so get this disc. You know you wanna! Besides, I think it's much better to watch this two-part episode as one long piece. The Season 6 DVDs have the first half on one disc, and the second half on another. How annoying! This is much more convenient.
Xena Warrior Princess - Complete Series (Seasons 1-6)
Well, if you don't have any Xena DVDs right now but you're thinking about getting some, you might as well get 'em all. :)
Xena - The 10th Anniversary Collection
No new material here. Just a collection of favorite episodes from all 6 seasons. If you don't want to spring for the complete sets, this is a good start.
Hercules The Legendary Journeys - The Xena Trilogy (Xena, the Warrior Princess / Unchained Heart / The Gauntlet) [VHS]
See where it truly began! This three-episode arc on the Hercules series introduces Xena's character and fills in some back story that's good to know when you are watching the Xena series. Worth seeing.

A Short Guide to Xena Fan Fiction
Proceed through all fan fiction with caution if you are averse to explicit sexual content, a relationship between two women, or graphic violence. Most stories that contain these elements will tell you so at the top of the story.
There are different types of fanfic in the Xenaverse:
- Classic fiction uses the Xena & Gabrielle characters as they appeared on the show
- Alt or Subtext fiction assumes X & G were more than just friends. Sometimes subtext fiction is placed in the classic library since most people now see an intimate relationship between X & G as a given.
- Uber fiction is set in a different time and place than the show, and generally uses characters not named X & G though they share X & G's characteristics
- Conqueror fiction depicts Xena in her evil warlord days and often contains graphic violence
- Post-FIN fic takes places after the final episode Friend In Need (FIN) or sometimes finishes the Xena story in a different way than the final episode
- Mel & Janice fiction uses the characters of Mel Pappas and Janice Covington, who appeared in the Season 2 episode titled The Xena Scrolls
- Clone fiction uses the clone X & G characters that were introduced in the Season 6 episode titled Send in the Clones
