Ideas for Christmas Gift Baskets to Make at Home

Christmas gift baskets are the most popular presents to give and receive during the holiday season. Indeed, it is not always easy to come up with a Christmas gift idea as you're never 100% certain that your present will please their recipient. How many times have you received a gift that you placed in the cupboard and never took an eye on?

So, I made a decision on going as original as possible with the gifts I'll give this Christmas and plan to make my own Christmas gift baskets at home. Making Christmas gift baskets is easy as a pie as long as you know the theme of your Christmas gift basket and the type of items you're going to include into the basket.

In addition, Christmas gift baskets can be made out of many different materials such as a wooden box, an old attache-case or simply a shoebox beautifully decorated. Wanna learn more? Grab a cup coffee and check out the different homemade Christmas gift baskets listed in this page.

Themed Christmas Gift Baskets

Let your imagination go wild while making your own Christmas gift basket

The list including potential Christmas gift baskets to make yourself is limitless. Indeed, there's a wide range of different themes to choose from when making Christmas gift baskets.

Here are a few examples of potential Christmas gift baskets to make at home:

  • Whiskey themed Christmas gift basket for old alcohol collectors,
  • First class brand cigars for tobacco amateurs
  • Music gift basket for classic music amateurs
  • DVD or blu ray gift basket for a fan of cinema
  • Book gift basket for readers
  • The list of potential Christmas gift baskets doesn't stop there!

You are just limited by your imagination.

As an example, my father is a beer amateur and turned 65 this year. So, I think I'll prepare a nice Christmas gift basket filled with different sorts of beers. The support will be a wooden shelf on which I'll place as many bottles of beer as possible - I thought of 65 (one per year) but think I'll keep the idea for his next birthday. I live in Belgium; which produces more than 680 sorts of beers; which means that I'm going to have hard times selecting the few bottles of beer I'm going to include into the Christmas gift basket.

Christmas Gift Baskets of Chocolate

Chocolate themed Christmas gifts are sure to please their recipients and can be made at home

The most popular Christmas gift baskets ever are the chocolate themed gift baskets. So, for chocolate amateurs on your Christmas gift list, Christmas gift baskets filled with chocolate specialties and chocolate related products that you can find on the market, you're sure to make your recipient happy.

Making chocolate themed Christmas gift baskets at home is quite easy. Here's an example: using a metallic box, fill it with cream-colored tissue paper, a sheet of silk paper or crepe paper and then add the following chocolate related products:

  • A bottle of chocolate liquor,
  • Leonidas chocolates,
  • Chocolate bars - Cote d'Or Special Edition,
  • A natural cocoa box,
  • Boxes of fruit, flower or citrus flavoured sugar.

Naturally there are many more items you could add to chocolate themed Christmas gift baskets... As a matter of fact, when it comes to chocolate gifts, seashell chocolates; which are a specialty by Guylian, chocolate waffles a specialty from Liege, Belgian truffles; which are tasteful sweet treat or Cote d'Or mignonettes in a gift box; which are a one-stop treat to serve with coffee; work wonders too!

Here you are, in less time than you thought at first sight, you have your Christmas gift basket ready!

Christmas Gift Baskets of Food

Embark your recipient on a trip around the world through a homemade Christmas gift basket

Christmas gift baskets of food are also very popular and provide you with a wide range of different options. Let's take the example of homemade Spanish food Christmas gift baskets.

Here's how to proceed to create a stunning Spanish gourmet Christmas gift basket: using a metallic basket, place red and yellow silk or crepe paper and add the following products:

  • A bottle of Ponche,
  • A bottle of "Sangre de Toro" wine,
  • A pata negra ham or Serrano ham; which are the most delicious Spanish hams ever,
  • A chorizo, a tasteful spicy sausage,
  • A Queso Manchego or other Spanish cheese such as Mahon Reserva, Idiazabal and Murcia al Vino,
  • A bottle of Spanish olive oil,
  • Almond Turron,
  • An assortment of Christmas Spanish cookies (Surtido de Navidad) which are Spanish lemon, almond, etc. flavored biscuits.

Gourmet Christmas Gift Baskets

The gift basket that is sure to provide a fine gourmet with lots of pleasure

Gourmet Christmas gift baskets are generally sure to please everyone. But if there's a gourmet on your Christmas gift list, then a gourmet Christmas gift basket is the most appropriate present to get this person.

For you to make gourmet Christmas gift baskets at home, you're going to varnish a wooden wine box (I suggest using a "rustic oak" tinted varnish). Once the box has dried, fill it with decorative straw or beige silk or crepe paper and add the following products:

  • Three bottles of wine (red, rose and white),
  • Fresh French foie gras which is a must for any gourmet,
  • 2 legs duck confit, another must have specialty for a gourmet;
  • Caviar (make sure this fits with your budget as with caviar, you might end up spending lots of money);
  • Truffles; or, because truffles are as expensive as gold, truffle perfumed oil and seasoning; which are more affordable products,
  • A pot of onion confit; which your recipient will spread on their foie gras.

Because gourmet Christmas gift baskets can be quite expensive, depending on how large is your Christmas gift budget, you'll want to remove some products. Of course, if your budget is large, you might want to add more products to the gourmet Christmas gift basket.

I've created gift baskets for all our (mine & my partners) family, simply by using our allotment gluts, fruits & berries picked from our garden, & hedgerows. It has saved us a fortune, any time spent shopping commerically, and furthermore- I've been able to create completely homemade, personalised gifts that I know all will enjoy. Its been fun too, albeit more time consuming :)
    So far I've made -:
allotment autumnal chutney, tomato-chilli jam, apple-mint jelly, blackberry liqueurs, quince liqueur, damson liqueur and chutney! I'm going to suppliment these gifts with complimentary homemade ones (using bought ingredients) - namely homemade chocolates (I use ice cube trays to make these-as recommended on a choc making course, so easy!), chocolate truffles, turkish delight, and oatmeal biscuits, provided with small quality cheeses - to enjoy with the various chutneys.
I use small cardboard fruit/veg crates from supermarkets wrapped in christmas paper- to fill as hampers, and have reused jam jars for chutneys & vinegar bottles (both labelled with pretty cath kidston stickers on, plus ribbon!) for produce. Practically cost-free. I've only spent on pretty labels, shredded paper to line baskets, and time & love creating these.
can't recommend enough -your friends & family will love them- and you can make all your presents - if doing quantities of each edible gift at time- at once, saving valuable time and stress from christmas shopping and getting that inner 'I made it myself' glow and smugness at same time ;) Lucy

Fabulous ideas here. One of my favorite gifts to give people are baskets filled with something they enjoy. It is so fun to pick a theme and then hunt for just the right things to fill it.
