I’ve been astonished throughout my adult life to meet people who say, “I’d read, I just can’t find the time for it.” For someone like me, this is like saying, “I’d breathe, but I just can’t find the time for it.” So how do we open people’s hearts to, and with, reading? In this new book, Open Your Heart with Reading, I share how my heart was -- and continues to be -- opened through literature, through my interaction with the people and places and times and ideas I have found in books. But I don’t stop there: I want to help others find the same joy and pain and amazement and delight in literature that I have found. So reading this book is in many ways an interactive experience. Every chapter is followed up with suggestions that the reader can do, then and there, to enter into a reading experience highlighting that chapter’s theme. I also talk with other people – lots of other people – about reading and how it’s opened their hearts. Because my focus is on opening the heart and letting the words in – “I took the book from the shelf and I let it speak,” as James Keelaghan says – I’m not addressing books as genres, and I don't make a distinction between “high” literature and pulp fiction. This book is like my bookshelves: eclectic and full of life.
