The only other time I can remember being so caught up with the characters in a series was when The Wire aired. Dare I say this is the greatest achievement in the cop genre? At it's heart, The Shield is a tale of police corruption, good and bad decisions, and the consequences of those moral decisions. In the very first episode episode we find out that Detective Mackey (Michael Chiklis) has shot a fellow officer in cold blood and the next five seasons are spent dealing with the fallout of that and a series of other ethical dilemmas.
