UK Practical Driving Test (Cars)

The practical driving test is a test of the ability to drive a car without assistance from an instructor or accompanying driver. Driving tests last for around 40 minutes and candidates are tested by driving examiners employed by the Driving Standards Agency (DSA), an agency of the Department for Transport. Driving tests are conducted on public roads, with the driving examiner directing the candidate around one of several test routes selected for that particular test centre. The UK driving test covers a range of different types of road and driving conditions and test candidates will be required to pass an eyesight check, answer vehicle safety questions and demonstrate a range of driving skills including independent driving and a reversing manoeuvre. On passing the Category B practical driving test, candidates are granted a full UK driving licence. If the driving test is passed in an automatic car, the full driving licence will be restricted to allow the licence holder to drive automatic cars only, whereas driving tests passed in manual cars give entitlement to drive cars with both manual and automatic transmission. If you're wondering what Lurchers are, let me enlighten you! Lurchers are dogs...elegant, stylish, fast, beautiful, breathtaking dogs! Lurchers are affectionate, loving, have bags of character, make fabulous pets, and despite the fact they can run at over 40 mph, they don't require you to spend most of your life out of the house exercising them, as, aside from running, the other thing they love best in the world is sleeping! The one downside of being a Lurcher owner is that Lurchers seem firmly convinced that sofas and all other types of comfy furniture were designed for THEM...not humans! Lurchers are crossbreed sighthounds, so they come in all shapes, colours and sizes - from small smooth coated Whippet crosses to big hairy, rough coated Deerhound crosses...they all have two things in common though - pointy noses and loooong legs :) I own three Lurchers, a boy called Tigger and two girlies called Amber and Ebony. All of them were unwanted strays I re-homed from a rescue centre. To say I adore them is an understatement - "adopting" them (or was it the other way around??!) were the three wisest decisions I've ever made! Mere words cannot adequately convey how totally wonderful my dogs are. Whatever I do for them, they repay me a million times over and more, with love and affection. Life with my Lurchers is full of fun, cuddles, waggy tails, licks and LOVE! Unfortunately, though there are sadly, many more "unwanted" Lurchers in dog pounds throughout the UK. Some of them are fortunate enough to be taken in and cared for by one of the handful of Lurcher Rescue organisations in the UK, run by kind, dedicated people who move heaven and earth to find unwanted Lurchers a good home (or as the soppy amongst us say, their "Forever Sofa"!) ...but not all stray or unwanted Lurchers are so lucky and for far too many of these stunning, graceful, affectionate and delightful dogs, this means a death sentence :( On this page, I hope to give an insight into the wonderful world of Lurchers and hope to inspire fellow dog lovers to consider giving a home to a Lovable, Long-Legged Lurcher! How To Reverse Around A Corner

Reversing around a corner is one of the manoeuvres you may be asked to show the examiner on your driving test. You will usually be asked to reverse round a corner into a side road on your left. It is unlikely (but not impossible!) that you will be asked to reverse into a side road on your right. The aim of this manoeuvre is for you to reverse into the new road, smoothly and under control, keeping reasonably close to the kerb. You will also be expected to carry out all appropriate safety proceedures and checks whilst doing so. This will demonstrate to the driving examiner that you can control the car safely and reverse with reasonable accuracy. You will need to know how to perform all of the following four reversing manoeuvres for your Practical driving test. Vampira was a TV horror show hostess in the 1950s whose iconic "sex, death and humor" style heavily influenced the later (better known but very similar!) character, "Elvira, Mistress Of The Dark". The character of Vampira was created by actress Maila Nurmi as a "glamour ghoul", hired to boost ratings for a late night horror movie show on a local TV station based in Hollywood. Vampira was a beautiful woman with long black hair, ultra long red fingernails, deathly pale skin and a tiny waist, wearing a tight, low cut, cleavage revealing black dress which was slit to reveal her elegant legs clad in black hosiery and she became an instant hit with the predominantly male audience! The Vampira Show aired during 1954-1955 and avid viewers would eagerly tune in to watch sexy Vampira glide spookily down a mist filled and cobweb strewn corridor to greet her audience with a blood curdling scream before seductively purring the words, "Screaming relaxes me so"! Vampira went on to appear in several low-budget films including the 1958 cult classic horror/sci-fi movie "Plan 9 From Outer Space" directed by Ed Wood. William Topaz McGonagall (1825 - 1902) was an ordinary working class Scottish man employed as a weaver in Dundee's textile industry. One momentous day in 1877 when he was aged 52, literally in a sudden blinding flash of "divine enlightenment", he "received the spirit of poetry". Following this revelation and inspired by an impressive self-belief in his own talent, McGonagall immediately started to write poetry...and what poetry he wrote! For the rest of his life, McGonagall was firmly and unshakeably convinced that his poems were amongst the finest works ever penned in English Literature - an opinion which, sadly for him, his contemporaries did not share! The poems of William McGonagall are usually on epic themes dealing with historical events, tragedies and inspirational places and people, but they lack subtlety, have little or no rhythmn, cadence or poetic metaphor and use limited vocabulary and awkward repetitive rhyming...and it's this combination that makes his work so fascinating and unintentionally funny. The turn in the road (sometimes incorrectly called a "3 point turn or three point turn") is one of the reversing manoeuvres that you might be asked to perform on your Practical Driving Test. The aim of this manoeuvre is for you to turn the car round to face in the opposite direction by using forward and reverse gears. You will also be expected to carry out all appropriate safety proceedures and checks whilst doing so. This will demonstrate to the driving examiner that you can control the car safely and reverse with reasonable accuracy. The Ostrich Inn is situated in the village of Colnbrook, near Slough in Berkshire. The Ostrich is said to be the third oldest public house in England and parts of the building date back to the 12th century! King John is reputed to have stayed overnight at The Ostrich en route to nearby Runnymede where he would sign the Magna Carta. The infamous highwayman Dick Turpin is also known to have stayed at the Inn and legend has it that Jarman, one of the former landlords of The Ostrich was a mass murderer who killed at least 60 of his customers (the richer looking ones!) while they slept at the Inn by means of a trapdoor under their beds which plunged them into a vat of boiling water! Jarman's murderous deeds and his hinged bed are believed to have been the inspiration behind the tale of Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber Of Fleet Street! Not surprisingly The Ostrich is rumoured to be haunted and has been the subject of several "paranormal" investigations... Inside The Ostrich you can still see a small model of the "murder bed", along with a large stuffed Ostrich named "Esmerelda"! Over 900 years after it first opened it's doors in the reign of King Henry I, The Ostrich is still a popular pub and restaurant. Driving Test October 2010 Changes - Independent Driving

The UK Practical Driving Test has changed! From 4th October 2010, two important changes to the driving test were made: 1) independent driving, 2) a reduction in the number of reversing manoeuvres The new independent driving section of the driving test enables the examiner to assess how you make your own decisions when driving. The examiner will ask test candidates to drive independently for around 10 minutes by either following traffic signs, a series of directions, or a combination of both. If you're asked to follow a series of verbal directions, you'll be shown a diagram to help you. The length of the driving test has not been extended, so in order to allow time for the independent driving section, candidates now only need to perform one reversing manoeuvre instead of two as they did prior to 4th October 2010.

Hi, I'm CDT. Welcome to my "lensography"! If you're not familiar with Squidoo, you may be saying to yourself "Lensography? What's one of them?". Put simply a "lens" is a webpage on Squidoo - a webpage written by an individual with their own unique perspective on a topic. A "lensography" is a list or showcase of "lenses" written by a particular individual. Skyclad are a British Heavy Metal band credited as being one of the originators of "Folk Metal" and "Pagan Metal". Named after the Pagan practice of ritual nudity, Skyclad were formed in 1991 by former Sabbat vocalist Martin Walkyier and Steve Ramsay, guitarist with Satan and Pariah. Their aim was to create the "ultimate Pagan metal band". Cruachan are an Irish Celtic Heavy Metal band. Formed in 1992, Celtic music, history, Paganism and mythology are prominent influences in Cruachan's music, as are the Viking Age and the works of J R R Tolkein. Cruachan's earlier work mixed a variety of traditional and conventional instruments with Black Metal, but they later developed a more melodic style. Ministry was an industrial metal band, active from 1981 to 2008, who are widely regarded as one of the pioneers of industrial metal. Founded by Cuban born Al Jourgensen, Ministry were formed in Illinois in 1981. The band name was inspired by the movie Ministry of Fear. Originally an electronic synth-pop band, Ministry eventually developed a guitar-based industrial metal sound, with stunning live shows featuring a backdrop of disturbing visual images to accompany the intense sound. The band consider the release of The Land Of Rape And Honey in 1988 to be their true industrial metal debut. Ministry achieved major commercial success following the release in 1992 of Psalm 69, helped by the popularity of the video for Jesus Built My Hotrod on MTV. After a long and illustrious career, Ministry embarked on their farewell tour in 2008.
