"Elvis was perhaps one of biggest promoters of the martial arts during their big rise in the United States. Through his fight scenes in his movies, or his on-stage kata-inspired dance routines, Elvis introduced millions to the martial arts. Unlike many celebrities who got into the martial arts for movie roles, or because it was the "in" thing to do, Elvis truly believed in the martial arts and the benefits of martial arts study. ~~James Hom

Gentle on My Mind

In 1967, a "flash of brilliance in the form of a song seeped into the collective psyche of a generation. The number was 'Gentle On My Mind,' popularized by good-time singer Glenn Campbell." "Gentle on My Mind" is a song written by John Hartford, which won two 1968 Grammy Awards. Hartford himself won the award for Best Folk Performance. The other award, Best Country & Western Solo Vocal Performance, Male, went to Glen Campbell for his version of Hartford's song. Hartford said that he was inspired to write the song's poignant lyrics after seeing the film Doctor Zhivago, and that it took about fifteen minutes to write down. Campbell used "Gentle on My Mind" as the theme to his late-1960s TV variety show, The Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour. While Campbell's version remains the best known in the US, versions by Patti Page and Aretha Franklin were also Hot 100 hits in 1968 and 1969, respectively. In the UK, the version by Dean Martin reached number 2 in 1969. Elvis Presley also recorded the song at American Sound Studios in Memphis in January 1969, and the song featured on the award winning album From Elvis in Memphis. More recently, it was recorded by Lucinda Williams and this version was featured over the closing credits in the 2006 comedy movie Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby. R.E.M. performs a cover of this song on Sounds Eclectic: The Covers Project, a covers album released by alternative radio KCRW with the participation of 15 different artists.

John Hartford the Storyteller! I fell in love with John Hartford when I heard him sing Gentle on My MInd I've been a fan ever since. I first remember John singing in a Campbell's Soup commercial. Then we saw him playing banjo from the audience at the start of each installment of Glenn Campbell's (don't know if there was any relation) weekly television variety series, and "he made a significant impact as one of the creative renegades who contributed to the 'Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour's' ingenious irreverence." John Cowan Hartford (December 30, 1937– June 4, 2001) was an American country and bluegrass composer and musician known for his mastery of the fiddle and banjo, as well as for his witty lyrics, unique vocal style, and extensive knowledge of Mississippi River lore. Hartford performed with a variety of ensembles throughout his career, and is perhaps best known for his solo performances where he would interchange the guitar, banjo, and fiddle from song to song. He also invented his own shuffle tap dance move, and danced on an amplified piece of plywood while he played and sang. ~~From Wikipedia

By the time the pure, powerful voice of Eva Cassidy hit the airwaves, she had already passed away at the far-too-young age of 33. Early on she drew the attention of the "Godfather of Go-Go," Chuck Brown, who invited her to collaborate with his band, the Soul Searchers. Soon after, Cassidy was diagnosed with melanoma. After treatment, she recorded several collections of pop, blues, and jazz tunes, but the cancer was to return after only two years. Cassidy made one more public appearance in 1996, performing "What a Wonderful World," a rendition that still takes one's breath away today.

Kris Kristofferson was living in a condemded building when someone broke in one day while he was gone and trashed the place and stole what little he had to steal. Everything was gone! He had lost his family and wife and was disowned by parents. Not having anything was liberating. No way to go but up. So he wrote this song. Bobby Newarth (having heard Roger Miller's recording of the song) taught Janis the song while Kris was in Peru making a film with Dennis Hopper. He sang the song in the film. Bobby introduced Kris to Janis later (where they lived in her house for about a month). They became friends but he never heard her sing the song until after she died.
Joan Baez

There aren't many in showbiz like Baez. Forty years ago she was the dorky folk singer with the pure voice and the severe expression who, through sheer force of sincerity, won out as the symbol of her generation over hipper rivals. By her own admission she has only had two real hits, The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down and Diamonds and Rust, but the music was always less important to her than the message and the message less important than something else, something rather vague, which in the 1960s she would probably have called love. For those children of the 60s to whom the full-on counter-culture seemed daunting, Baez provided an accessible model of rebellion - concerned citizenship without the face paint. She was only 18 when she walked out on stage at the Newport folk festival in 1959, but had a stillness about her which the unstill found mesmerising. She looks back now and laughs; but she has to admit, she had a lot of style. Baez, at 65, is radiant. She didn't sell out; she didn't crack up. She switched from dairy to soya and went into therapy, but otherwise changed little during 40 years of fame. She didn't even lose her sense of humour, as so many activists do, in fact she has grown a lot more relaxed in the years since the 60s. Emma Brockes interviews Joan Baez Tuesday January 24, 2006 The Guardian

Hank Williams, "the hillbilly Shakespeare," left this world nearly 50 years ago yet he retains his hold on the American imagination as the most potent icon of country music. By 1953, literally worn out at twenty-nine, Hank Williams was gone. But he had given country music much of its standard repertoire, a new definition of stardom and a legend so enduring that he is still the model for countless singers and songwriters. In his youth, Hank befriended Rufus Payne, a black street musician known as "Tee-Tot". Years later, Hank would say that Payne had given him "all the music training I ever had", and most biographers consider Payne the source of the noticeable blues thread running through Hank's music.

Gamelan

Western enthusiasts have often compared the static yet constantly moving state of gamelan music to a river running in its course, or to "moonlight poured over the field". Gamelan is a form of unique and exotic music originating in the islands of Indonesia in South East Asia. The traditional music of Java, an island in the Malay Archipelago, the gamelan formed an important part of the religious and social life of the village. The gamelan is a collection of musical instruments, mostly metallic, with gong- or bell-like sounds, that has been passed down by oral tradition for well over a thousand years. Here is a well-developed, powerful, and beautiful music that is completely outside the western idea of what music could and should be, traditionally learned quite naturally and a part of everyday life, "in much the same way villagers learn to sow and harvest crops, prepare a meal, or build a traditional dwelling. Starting from the youngest age villagers begin to absorb the conventions and style of gamelan music, gradually and by osmosis as much as formal teaching, learning to play the various instruments. A village gamelan is not played by professional musicians but by villagers who take their part in playing the gamelan as they would in planting the fields or harvesting the crops. The gamelan and its music are an integral part of the ritual life of the village and indeed the entire gamelan and particularly the large gongs are considered sacred. The instruments of the gamelan are typically housed in its own open-walled building." Please rate this lens by clicking on the stars above...5 stars will be great!

Very often, fans of Sarah's latest works are surprised to learn of her illustrious past in Andrew Lloyd Webber productions on Broadway and the West End. Conversely, those who remember her landmark role in Phantom of the Opera find themselves marveling at the exciting direction that her career has taken in the decade since her departure from musical theatre. Hardcore Sarah fans, no doubt, are well aware that her singing career began with chart-topping success in the disco era, with a dancing career that extended all the way back to her childhood.

Of the most played songs at weddings, Wagner had one and John Denver had Two. One is Annie's Song. "Annie's Song" was written as an ode to Denver's then-wife, Annie Denver (Annie Martel). The two had started to come apart following his sudden success, and had separated when he took a trip to Switzerland. While on a ski lift by himself, Denver started to marvel the beauty around, and, thinking about his wife back at home, penned the song in a few minutes. The song has since become a wedding standard and an expression of love for many people, due to its grand imagery and the fact it could apply to anyone (Annie is not mentioned by name in any part of the song).

A Mighty Heart

The sad saga of slain Wall Street Journal South Asia bureau chief Danny Pearl is ultimately -- and very intimately -- Mariane Pearl's story. The film adapted from Mariane Pearl's 2003 harrowing memoir A Mighty Heart: The Brave Life and Death of My Husband Danny Pearl, is a terse, methodical account of Pearl's kidnapping and murder in Pakistan as seen through the eyes of those who sought his return. Having covered the U.S. bombing of Afghanistan following the Sept. 11 attacks, the Pearls were working as journalists in Karachi, Pakistan, on Jan. 23, 2002 -- the day Danny, chasing a story about foiled shoe bomber Richard Reid, got into a cab and never returned. Sticking close to the very pregnant Mariane (Jolie), the film recounts the restless five-week search for the man's whereabouts and his kidnappers' identities, all accompanied by a hailstorm of media attention. It is a harrowing but inspiring account of one woman's struggle with overwhelming tragedy and her refusal to give in to prejudice.

The Roches are Maggie, Terre and Suzzy — three Irish, Catholic, suburban, middle class sisters who have made their mark in folk music with quirky song lyrics and intricate harmonies. The trio has developed a loyal following over the years of being on the road or recording for nearly three decades. In early 1997, the Roches announced they were going their separate ways; while Maggie remained quiet, Terre formed a new group, Terre Roche and Her Moodswings, and Suzzy issued her first solo LP, Holy Smokes. Singing and touring together again after a 10-year hiatus. They haven't lost the off-kilter humor, vocal diversity or distinctive, poetic songwriting ability that earned them a loyal fan base, drawn to the eclectic musical synergy of the sisters. Fans are welcoming them back. Suzzy believes the time apart has really helped them, and that evidence of that is really clear on their latest album “Moonswept.” “Each of us over the last 10 years have gotten better at what we do and explored our strengths. On this album, and in performing, we let each other do what we do best, stay out each other’s way and support each other,” Suzzy says. “In that way, it’s a real classic Roche Sisters record. The arrangements are us. There’s a lot of information on it, the music is beautiful, and people who are interested in us will really like it.”

Jericho was canceled by CBS, but the network relented and renewed the show for seven more episodes after disappointed fans sent 25 tons of peanuts to CBS in protest. It's a great story of grassroots fan support. And then they canceled it again.

This lens is for the Fans of Jericho!

Denean

Danean writes that her "intention has always been to offer music that nourishes the spirit...to open pathways to higher states of awareness.

"Music, as a means of Divine worship creates a bridge between our deepest knowing and the world of the unseen. It is music that helps us to remember where we come from; music is the language of Spirit.

Did you know that within the Lakota tradition, the holy people are known as "singers"?"

Rosanne Cash

Cash is as close as you can get to country music royalty -- she's the daughter of legend Johnny Cash. But she's also blazed her own trail, with 25 years of making records and 11 number-one country music singles under her belt. For more than twenty-five years now, on such albums as Seven Year Ache (1981), Interiors (1990), 10 Song Demo (1996) and Rules of Travel (2003), Cash has made personal honesty a compelling signature of her songwriting. She has never been willing to turn away from difficult emotions or complex situations. Indeed, a writer first, she has found her truest voice in articulating the most heartbreaking emotional realities: betrayal, self-betrayal, loss, misunderstanding and isolation. But she also believes firmly in the limitless possibilities of personal redemption. ~~ Anthony DeCurtis
