Jackies by Warhol go to Dallas for Auction

DALLAS -- As news photographs, the 1963 images of Jacqueline Kennedy as a grieving widow touched the nation, reflecting America's mourning after the assassination of President John F. Kennedy.

For pop artist Andy Warhol, the photos became the catalyst for his "Jackie" works, a series of paintings and screen prints created between 1963 and 1968 that captured the moments before and after the assassination as she was transformed from glamorous first lady to grieving widow.

Most of the succession of portraits created by Warhol are screened in black on funereal blue backgrounds, and most were created in Warhol's New York studio, The Factory, in the months after the assassination. Warhol was fascinated by the first lady, who like Marilyn Monroe and Elizabeth Taylor seemed pursued by the shadow of death.

"Andy Warhol was the most brilliant chronicler of his time, everything touched him. While Warhol wanted to memorialize a horrific moment in history, he thought it would be distasteful to use news images of the president as he was killed, hence he embodied everything in the young widow,". said Tom Sokolowski, director of the Warhol Museum.

Heritage Auction Galleries Auction #5004 Includes Warhol Pop Art Suite of the widow Jacqueline Kennedy. Absentee bidding started April 10th 2008, and runs through May 7th 2008, The floor auction is being held in Dallas, TX on May 8*-9, 2008.

These portraits have captured one of the most traumatic events in postwar America and marks the development of instant news, mass emotion and mass reaction. Rather than a common voyeur, Warhol created a statement of American culture which is just as poignant today as it was in 1966.

Grading Your Vinyl Record Albums

Industry Standard Phonograph Record Grading System

The following is the grading system first developed by Goldmine Records. Virtually all methods currently in use for the grading of records, is based in some way, shape, or form, on this system. Rather than offer some variation of the original system first developed by Goldmine, Fox Music Company will display the Goldmine record grading method in it's entirety.

Look at everything about a record. It's playing surface, it's label, it's edges...under a strong light. Then based on your overall impression give it a grade based on the following criteria:

What Is A Vinyl Record??

Vinyl records were introduced and marketed as the unbreakable record, unlike its shellac counterpart of days gone by, that would break at the drop of a hat and becomes more brittle over time.

Vinyl records are made from polyvinyl chloride (PVC) which has been proven to be a most stable material for sound recording. As a practical matter, vinyl records provide excellent sound quality when treated with care.

Vinyl Records were the music source of choice for radio stations for decades, and the switch to digital music libraries by radio stations has not produced a noticeable improvement in sound quality...,as a note most radio stations severely reduce the dynamic range of their broadcasts and the allowed frequency bandwidth for a radio station is less than the bandwidth on a well-made record. Casual ears cannot detect a difference in quality between a CD and a clean new LP.

Vinyl Record Cleaning Perfected: the "Nitty Gritty" Record Cleaning System

Nitty Gritty Record Cleaners
Totally Clean Your Records:

Lets face it we all know someone who will tell us that audio cables don't make a difference, or that tubes amps sound the same as solid state, and that spending "that kind of money" on your stereo system is a waste. When it comes to audio, there are disagreements are at every turn, but I can say beyond any doubt, that you will be hard-pressed to find anyone who will tell you that dirty records sound good. Since the beginning of flat disc records, even the most laziest listener with the cheapest of stereos has at least tried to blow the dust out of the grooves. Everyone knows that a clean record sounds better.

Clean vinyl is not only better-sounding vinyl, it is longer-lasting vinyl as well. All kinds of contaminants can end up in the grooves that will not only impede playback but may also cause long-term damage even if you don't play your records.

Everyone who owns, previously owned or is interested in purchasing phonograph records should know they need to be maintained in a clean condition in order to sound their best and to preserve the quality of their fragile surfaces. Record cleaning devises operate on a number of different theories and principles, but they all have one thing in common -- they do not totally clean all pollutants from record grooves. They leave film, grease, residue, micro dust, static electricity, carbon fiber hair, and mold release compounds behind. These remaining pollutants prevent the record owner from hearing all the music on the record, regardless of the quality of the playback system and they cause premature wear of the record and phono stylus. Until now, no available record cleaning system was accepted by professionals and enthusiasts alike as producing the desired result -- clean records. No single system was able to rid a record's surface of film, grease, residue, and dust while it eliminated static electricity and left a purified vinyl disc.

Nitty Gritty offers such a system. Records cleaned on a Nitty Gritty system reproduce all the music stored in their grooves without the interference and masking of record pollutants. The Improvement in sound that a Nitty Gritty cleaning makes is so dramatic that the benefit of upgrading one component of a hi-fi system is less significant in comparison. the Nitty Gritty record cleaning system has established itself as an essential component in every hi-fi system.

Vinyl Record Care and Maintenance

Cleanliness is absolutely mandatory to achieve the best sound quality of your phonograph records. A clean record will not only sound better, but last longer. It's long been proven that the playing of dirty records will result in a rapid deterioration of quality and degradation of the original recorded sound, or simply can cause permanent damage to your records. The preservation of your valuable or irreplaceable records requires special care and cleaning. Not to mention that, stylus wear is greatly accelerated by playing dirty records, with the cost of a new cartridges these days, playing dirty records can lead to significant and unneeded expense.

What is a Phonograph Record??

A phonograph record is an analog sound medium that consists of a flat disc record with an inscribed modulated spiral groove usually starting near the outside edge (lead-in) and ending near the center of the record (lead-out).

The audio content of the record is contained within the spiral groove which extends for more than a half mile. The groove itself is actually narrower than the thickness of a human hair yet is capable of producing the highest frequencies the human ear can detect, to the fundamentals that are felt rather than heard.

The audio recording stored in this groove is played back by rotating the record clockwise at a constant rotational speed with a stylus or needle placed in the groove, converting the vibrations of the stylus into an electric signal and sending this signal through an amplifier to the speakers.

The normal commercial disc is engraved with two spiral grooves, one on each side of the record.

Heritage Auction Galleries Signature Auction 5004

This auction will begin with a very strong showing of works on paper, including such artists as James Jacques Tissot, Alexander Calder, Joan Miro and Willem de Kooning. Of special note are three insightful portraits by Andy Warhol featuring Jacqueline Kennedy in the moments before her husband was killed and at her husband's funeral. They were arguably the culmination of Warhol's exploration of the intersecting themes of celebrity and death, themes that are still resonant today.

The assortment of European works includes lovely portraits by Sir Thomas Lawrence and Frederic Leighton, Modernist sculptures by Niki de Saint Phalle, Amedeo Modigliani and Arnaldo Pomodoro, and a tiny Luminist jewel from Spanish painter Joaquín Sorolla y Bastida. A featured item in this portion of the auction is a large canvas rendering the Martyrdom of St. Andrew by Carlo Dolci and his workshop. This richly-colored scene is one of several treatments the artist made of this subject; the others can be found in major collections around the world.

Heritage is known for its excellent selection of American works, and this auction is no exception. Beautiful canvases by William Keith, Joseph Rusling Meeker, Eanger Irving Couse, William Merritt Chase, Edgar Alwin Payne and George William Sotter dominate this category, as well as a large group of Western and Texas art from such notables as Frederic Remington, Charles Marion Russell, Robert Wood, Julian Onderdonk and Porfirio Salinas.

In the world of jazz there is one artist collected the world over who has never played an instrument not even a note of music but has left his mark on the jazz culture. Illustrator David Stone Martin was one of the most prolific and influential graphic designers of the postwar era, with his signature hand sketched graphics with two or three primary colors, perfectly capturing the energy and spontaneity of the jazz idiom.

Lenny Bruce the Charlie Parker of Comedy

When once asked to describe jazz, trumpet legend Miles Davis sarcastically but saliently replied, "You can sweat it down to four words: Louis Armstrong and Charlie Parker." Applying that same old-school, new-school trailblazer to comedy is somewhat more problematic. A number of great early comics could stand in for the Armstrong entry, among them Charlie Chaplin, Groucho Marx, Jack Benny, and George Burns. But in choosing the "Charlie Parker of comedy," by that meaning the one who blazed the modern-day trail, influencing all that came after him, the answer is simple and irrefutable: Lenny Bruce. He was the genre's reckless visionary, the one who defied conventions, the law, and the system, and - like most visionaries - was taken down by it all in the end.

Because static electricity plays such a major role in the problem of vinyl record cleaning and that we have repeatedly referred to the malice effects of static electricity, we feel an explanation of this phenomenon is in order. Stated simply static electricity is the charge which results from the friction between on dielectric ("non-conductor") and another. The purer the material of which this dielectric is composed, the longer it will hold its A static charge.

What is an Original Print??

An "original print" is the image on paper or similar material made by one or more of the processes described here. Each medium has a special identifiable quality but because more than one impression of each image is possible. "Original" does not mean "Unique."

The artist's intention to create an original print is the key to the "originality" of the finished work. For example, if he first conceives of a watercolor, then has the result copied by woodcut, the result is not "original' but merely a reproduction. The total number of prints made of one image is an "edition". The number may appear on the print with the individual print number as a fraction such as 5/25 meaning "edition" was 25 examples with this example numbered 5. If intended for use with a written text original prints will not likely be numbered or hand-signed and may be produced in very large editions.

record stylus

No discussion of record care would be complete without examining another equally important element in the chain of musical reproduction-the phono pick-up cartridge and stylus. The very small dimensions of the stylus of a stereo cartridge combined with its extreme freedom of movement and its low tracking pressure, require that records be maintained in their original state. Since the pressures are too small for the stylus to push the dirt and dust aside. It in fact "plays" this foreign matter as if it were part of the groove. The result is an increase in background and surface noise.

Edison Diamond Disc

Non-collectors who come across Edison Diamond Discs characterize these records by their thickness, often times I hear "I saw some old records that are a quarter inch thick" --- Yes, they are thick, the company at first stamped issue numbers on the edge of the Diamond Disc... you need a thick record to do that. The discs are ten inches (diameter) but could hold more music than twelve inch discs made by other companies, some Diamond Discs play up to five minutes per side. If you find a twelve inch Edison Disc made in 1926, this is a long playing record or LP which plays up to 40 minutes and is a valuable item.
