Did you know: Sea ice floats because it is less dense in the solid phase than it is in the liquid phase. If sea ice were MORE dense in the solid phase, it would sink to the bottom of the ocean (light things can't carry heavy things too well, right? Sinking, dense ice would cause the oceans to freeze to their beds, so animals and plants which live on the ocean floor would die! Sea ice is about as salty as the ice in your refrigerator! Although sea ice is made from salty sea water, the salt molecules are rejected back into the liquid as ice forms. There isn't much room for salt molecules to be trapped in the close-knit structure of sea ice. As I learned how astonishing ice is I became a pagophile which means "a lover of ice".

First of all I just want you to know that it is by invitation only then the site is very user friendly. Quick and easy to set up and start using right away. Apply to join or ask a pinterest user to invite you - they will need your email address to notify you. Why use Pinterest? Because it is a lot easier than in the old days when we would cut a picture out of a magazine of something we liked and pinned it to a cork board on our wall as a reminder of something we would like to make or buy.. Pin it instead and you can still see the picture you found and like. So far 97% are women using Pinterest for craft ideas, recipe collections and many others. The men will soon catch up with their 1000's of toys, Soon you will see sport car pin it boards along with sports and hobbies. The list is endless. Since I create lenses on Squidoo I love it to collect ideas for niche lenses and organize my lenses in topics where I can add other items that I can use to update my lens.

The game of curling was already in existence in Scotland in the early sixteenth century as evidenced by a curling stone inscribed with the date 1511, uncovered along with another bearing the date 1551, when an old pond was drained at Dunblane, Scotland. Scottish immigrants introduced curling to Canada where it thrived and attained a level of excellence that remains unsurpassed. Canada currently has an estimated 1,000,000 curlers and is generally considered the dominating force both in innovations to the sport and in competitive curling success. I have in the spotlight a Canadian women curler - Sandra Schmirler. Sandra led her team to the first-ever Olympic gold medal in women's curling in the 1998 Games in Nagano, Japan. Nelson is where I lived but the entire West Kootenays was my home. Up until my husband died we spent so much time in the local mountains camping, fishing, prospecting, gold panning, wild berry picking and generally enjoying the wilderness. After he died I still longed to venture into the wilderness and thankfully I had many friends that would include me on boating trips, hiking trips and even picking wild huckleberries. Nelson did not feel like it had any strangers in it at that time - as nearly everyone greeted me on Baker Street (the main st.). A walk down Baker Street was pure pleasure.

The show began 14 Jun 1937 on station CRCT (a CBC affiliate in Toronto), moved to the CBC network four months later, and ran for 22 years, nearly 4900 broadcasts in total. It was heard in its prime years by some two million Canadians daily and also was carried for a time in the USA by the MBS network. Open Heart Surgery - My Personal Experience.

Recovery from open heart surgery has been wonderful. I am feeling strong again and no complications. Do you need open heart surgery? Go for it! I had my surgery at St.Paul's Hospital, Vancouver, BC, Canada on March 29, 2006. 2007 - update - one year later: No complications of any kind. I am feeling so much better and I am doing things that I haven't been able to do in years. My energy is improving and overall health is improving. I am so happy I had this truly amazing surgery! 2008--Feb. I recently suffered a mild heart attack in a different area of the heart from where the surgery was and I am slowly recovering well. While in hospital the Doctors ordered another angiogram and the area of the surgery is looking very good and no problems have developed with the surgery. The area of the mild heart attack is being treated with medication. Set backs can happen but they are often treated with medication. Don't give up. Keep living with a positive attitude. 2009 - update - 3 years have passed since the open heart surgery and my heart is functioning well and strong. 2012 - still doing well. Mild activity and feeling fine. February is the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada's "Heart Month"

OK, I admit that I am a fifties car fanatic!. It was a time when car designers left behind the dark depressing colours of the forties and exploded the market with colour and exciting new designs. I remember looking forward to the new cars arriving in town for the new season and taking them for test drives. The car dealers knew my husband and I well and just handed us the keys to take their new arrival for a drive..We each had our opinion of the different models but in the end we both fell in love with the Chevy. I remember our drive in the Edsel and not feeling comfortable in it. I can't remember why maybe it was because some bad reports about it had already reached our town too. At the same time, the Edsel was a car you would not forget as it was the brunt of many jokes over the next few years. I've added a Duel where you can defend your favourite. A burl cribbage table that was handcrafted by my Dad, Harry Peterson. What is a burl? Burls yield a very peculiar and highly figured wood, one prized for its beauty by many; its rarity also adds to its expense. It is sought after by people such as furniture makers, artists, and wood sculptors. Burl wood is very hard to work in a lathe or with hand tools because its grain is misshapen and not straight. My Dad found a huge burl in the early 1970's when he was camping in the wilderness. Eventually he decided to see if it could be made into a much needed cribbage table. My Grandpa loved to play crib but it is getting difficult for him because the crib board was too small etc. So Dad decided to make one that had only one leg so it could be moved closer to Grampa and then the Cribbage graphics had to be bigger too. After many coats of varathane to protect it we have been playing crib on this table for nearly 40 years. I have it by my chair in my livingroom. My first impression review of Sunshine Diner in Vancouver, BC? "Wow! I love this diner!" A special fifties milkshake outing was planned by our Recreation Director where I live at a Seniors Retirement home. My friend, Donalda, and I were looking forward to going as we are both big fans of all the trivia of the nifty fifties. Neither one of us had been to the Sunshine Diner before. We were not disappointed. The Sunshine Diner was full of fabulous fifties 'eye candy' decor! Oh, and yes, the milkshake was thick and creamy and served in the true fifties style. I am so glad that I took my camera with me as I was able to capture some great first impression moments at the Sunshine Diner. In that moment, I became "GramaBarb." And, I've never looked back! Moose are found throughout northern North America and Eurasia. Their range coincides with that of circumpolar boreal forests. In North America they occur throughout Alaska, Canada, the northeastern United States and as far south as the Rocky Mountains in Colorado. In Eurasia they are found throughout northern Europe and eastwards through Siberia and Mongolia. They are generally found near streams or ponds where there are willows. Moose eat twigs, bark, roots and the shoots of woody plants, especially willows and aspens. In the warm months, moose feed on water plants, water lilies, pondweed, horsetails, bladderworts, and bur-reed. In winter, they browse on conifers, such as balsam fir, and eat their needle-like leaves. They require 20kg of food per day but their stomachs, when full, can weigh up to 65 kg. Most of a moose's time is spent eating. Their distinctive snout has nostrils that close automatically as they dip their heads underwater for food.

When purchasing a gift for Grandma it is important that it reflects your love for her. Take her passions into consideration and give her the gift of love by remembering what they are. Let me tell you a true "Grandma I Love You" story: I took my 2 granddaughters to a local Bird Sanctuary for the day and at the Sanctuary is a gift shop. The girls wanted to look around in the gift shop while I was resting on a bench outside. At the end of the day they thanked me for a 'fun day' and gave me a gift. It is a beautifully crafted bird pin - and what made it even more special was that they had chosen a chickadee out of the dozen or so bird pins in the shop. I exclaimed, "That is perfect! How did you pick the chickadee?" The answer? "Because Grandma, you always talk about chickadees so we knew you loved chickadees!" I gave them a big hug! We can learn a lesson from these 2 little girls - Do you listen to your Grandma? If you do then you will not ever need to ask her what she would like because you will know.

A family of Glaucous-winged Gulls moved into our life. They gave us an opportunity to get to know the entire family of Mom, Dad and 3 chicks up close. They are living on the roof of the fifth floor of our apartment building. We can take their pictures from the 7th floor balcony. Did you know the Glaucous-winged Gulls are excellent Sanitation Engineers? Many people consider the gull to be a nuisance, but they actually perform a very valuable service. They are garbage men (sanitation engineers for the politically correct) with wings. They scavenge up great numbers of dead animals and organic litter which could pose a health threat to humans. If they do utter the dreaded "I am bored" words - I say "There are no such words at Grandma's house - you just need to put your imagination to work and 'bored' will fly away." I keep a few "raw materials" for imaginative play in a special drawer to help get them started. For example - dressup clothes; variety of art stuff; creative building toys, music for dancing and singing; small stuffies etc Important tip - Always keep your camera handy for those special cute moments.

Gratitude and Acknowledgements Long Overdue

Thank you, Jeff, for all your support. Recently I read this reminder: "When an author writes a book, she writes an Acknowledgments section where she pays homage to and says thanks for all the people who helped along the way." This lens of Gratitude and Acknowledgements is long overdue. I have written not one but over 300 lenses and I could not have written that many lenses without the uncondtional love and support of my son, Jeff (aka jeffryv). This '300 lens book' begins 2005 when the Doctors told me I had less than a year to live unless I have open heart surgery to correct the problems. While waiting for the surgery date Jeff knew I needed a new computer project to work on to get me through those difficult days. He sent me a link to Squidoo and said "Mom, this looks like something you would enjoy. Join and give it a try." I am forever grateful to Jeff for having the insight to know what I needed at that time. And for helping me to not give up. "Never quit!" Jeff always said.

Amtrak was My Friend

I recieved the phone call we all dread - news of the unexpected death of a loved one - My Aunt Ev passed away - Oct, 1992. Her funeral would be in Palm Springs the coming weekend. I was the only one in the family that was free to go on such short notice which meant I had to travel alone but I had a problem - I was living in the mountains in the interior of BC. A flight to Palm Springs was a zig-zag chain of connections and overnight stays - not to mention premium airfare cost. - made the trip too hard for me. I wonder about the Amtrak? Getting to Seattle was much easier and on the train I could rest and recover from this shock before the weekend of tears. I bought the package of a sleeper compartment that included the meals in the dining car. Pure Luxury all the way! (Except for a short bus trip at the end of the line to Palm Springs) Watch the video of my friend the Amtrak Coast Starlight. For the trip home I once again had to take the bus to the Amtrak line and I was very tired and stressed out! When the big Coast Starlight rolled into the station I was never so happy to get on board. I was escorted to a surprise upgrade - to a full suite - I went in to find the bed all made up with chocolates on my pillow and the bedside reading light turned on. How welcome and pampered I felt! The gentle rhythm of the train is something special you will never forget as you drift off into a sleep of sweet dreams. I did not feel alone on the Amtrak and I will always think of the Amtrak Coast Starlight as my friend.

Our boys were at the age where we wanted them to learn to care for a little dog and to enjoy to special companionship that you get from your dog. I am a firm believer that all kids need pets. Scrabble has been my board game of choice for over 50 years. Hundreds of games have been played with family and friends but three challengers stand out as very special memories. The Cinnamon Coffee Challenger, 7 Letter Word Fanatic Challenger and the Competitive Statistician Challenger. # 1 - In the 1960's was the Cinnamon Coffee Challenger - My Brother, a Universty graduate and merciless when it came to Scrabble and caused me to dig deep into my word skills. I loved my brother for taking the time to play scrabble with me and always made a big pot of fresh perked coffee that I had added a piece of cinnamon bark to the coffee grounds so that a hint of cinnamon flavor was in every cup of coffee. #2 - In the late 1970's to 1983 was the 7 Letter Word Fanatic Challenger - My Husband - my love! He often played scrabble with me because he knew I liked the game but then when he was recovering from a long horrible cancer surgery - we played scrabble every day and it helped us have quiet quality time together during those difficult days. That was when he became a 7 letter word fanatic! He set a goal for himself to play at least 3 seven letter words in each game. My challenge then became to match him or block him - we had so much fun. I am grateful for those special days together as my husband passed away in Dec. 1983. #3 - In the 1990's was the Competitive Statistician Challenger - I love my Son (jeffryv) and love how competive he is and that was a real incentive for me to play better and come up with words "outside the box". To make the games more interesting he kept a record of all the stats for each game. I kept a copy of his set of scrabble stats - it is fun to read now - 20 years later. It is posted on this lens.

Coyotes are highly adaptable and live in a variety of different niches. Their behavior can vary widely depending on where they live, but in general they live and hunt singly or in monogamous pairs in search of small mammals including rabbits, mice, shrews, voles, and foxes. It is an omnivore and adapts its diet to the available food sources including fruits, grasses, and vegetables along with small mammals. Coyotes mate for life. They breed around the month of February and 4-6 pups are born in late April or early May. Both parents (and sometimes undispersed young from the previous year) help to feed the pups. At three weeks old the pups leave the den under close watch of their parents. Once the pups are eight to twelve weeks old they are taught to hunt. Families stay together through the summer but the young break apart to find their own territories by fall. They usually relocate within ten miles. The young are sexually mature at 1 year of age. To my dismay, the errors that the City of Prince George made in their signage is now being continued throughout the internet. It is not a local problem anymore. I am here to speak out on byhalf of my Dad and Mom, Harry and Mamie Peterson. I was a teenager still living at home when my Mom and Dad decided to sell their property on top of Peden Hill. As children, the 3 of us spent a lot of time hiking in the woods up there and we hated to see it sold. My parents gave us each a lot of our choice and it helped ease the pain. I remember how Mom planned the subdivision to keep it as natural as possible hence the lots were not little square boxes but irregular shapes to fit the lay of the land. The streets were to be named after her favourite stars. She explained why - "When you are up at the top of the hill on a clear dark night you can see the stars so bright it is as if you can reach up and touch them" Starlane became Mom's pet project. She supervised the development so as to keep it as natural as possible. The mid 1950's was a time when Starlane belonged to Mamie Peterson and it is time to honour that memory.

Once upon a time a long time ago there were two little girls living on a farm with Dad and Mom. Each season was marked by a special event dictated by nature. As we grew tired of one season the excitement of the next was just around the corner. Spring was a season of freedom and we celebrated it early. As soon as the pussy willow started to bud we waited for that special day in the spring when the snow started to melt and then froze again overnight. This meant that the next morning there would be a crust on the snow that was strong enough to hold our weight. To-day we would put on our new black "gum boots" and run like the wind on top of the snow across the field to where the willows grew pussy willows. Often we would repeat over and over the poem that Mom had taught us.

(Rheumatiod Arthritis). ( I have over 50 RA diseased joints) Number one - It is important that you have a very good Rhuematologist. A Doctor that is connected to excellent Rehab hospitals that specialize in Arthritis and Rehab clinics because you will need good current education about managing your arthritis. You can't do it alone. Flare ups happen and you will need 'tune-ups' from these clinics. Once you understand the physical aspects of RA and what you need to do to slow the progression down then it is very important to go to Arthritis Education classes that help you with your mental attitude. Learn how to replace the negative with the positive. Stay as independant as you can but when circumstances change so that you need help for certain tasks - accept it with gratitude and graciousness. Your whole world will become brighter when you do. Always, always look for what you CAN do! Never, never give up and feel sorry for yourself!

Baby raccoons are frequently left abandoned and need assistance from rehabilitators. Baby raccoons require a special diet and can suffer serious damage if fed the wrong formula. Therefore assistance should be left to the rehabilitators. Baby raccoons readily accept human parents but at about 5 months of age they become aggressive and mean. This is one reason raccoons don't make good pets. Raccoons truly are one of the most endearing and charismatic animals in the world. Through understanding and tolerance, we can coexist with wildlife.

Now you can. Modern technology brings the high tech camera to your home for a price everyone can afford. I missed an opportunity to set up a birdwatchcam to record a Glaucous-winged Gull family because I failed to research the new cameras that are available - I was assuming that the price was too high etc. And then getting permission from the apartment management to set up the camera early in the season. Big mistake that I regret. Next year I will be ready.

Friends, Company and Old Age

I was asked the question in all kindness, "Would you like to have more company?" My first reaction was "No, I don't." I shocked myself by the answer as I am a people person and most of the time enjoy company. What happened? I miss my friends! Another reality of Old Age is affecting me and that is - old age is also affecting my friends too and some have died, moved to be closer to their kids, too sick to travel and a number of other life altering problems. And I have had to make changes in my life for all the same reasons and my friends are thousands of miles apart or have died. I have more than enough company in my life already - A building full of people (in their Old Age) to chat with over coffee or dinner and then most forget your name by the next day. Another reality of Old Age. New friends are hard to make when there are no roots and soil for it to grow in. Then about a week ago I recieved a snail mail letter from a very special friend - it is a friendship that spans back to the early 1960's - she is now in her 80's and having heart trouble. and she sent me a card with the words "Your friendship is like a beautiful shell found on life's beach - a shell so rare and fine that it will be treasured forever!" (Jean lives far away) I don't want company, I want my friends as we know each other so well and can talk from our hearts without fear of being judged and we understand each others unspoken thoughts, we hug and we remember each other's names. Old age robs you of those basic needs As I listen to the Residents that live in this apartment building - they are missing their friends too and the conversation often ends with "she or he is gone now." and they go back to their suite not wanting to talk anymore - they don't want company - they want their friends. I often dream of a Grand Reunion of my friends all meeting together on a beach in Hawaii. My friends are in my heart forever . I count my blessings everyday for the support of my family in my need to downsize and their love that keeps me emotionally strong and happy. My heart overflows with love for my family!

August 2010 Long Hot Summer for Photo a Day

A wide variety of activity kept us all busy as bees this month. The month started with an extra special outing to the Vancouver Art Gallery Patio Cafe where my friend and I just hung out for the morning and enjoyed the flowers of every description. The Gull chicks were still entertaining us everyday and more of our flowers were blooming far beyond our wildest expectations. The flowers required a lot of watering during the hot days as they are all grown in containers. So a few of us spent most of our time on our large patio. It was a time that we were all happy when it rained and our flowers looked less stressed and even more beautiful. All in all August was a wonderful summer month.

My doctor suggested I get a service dog to accompany me on outings by myself. This led to going to the organization that trained service dogs for an interview and I discovered they had a very long waiting list with people on it with far greater needs than I had. Would I be interested in adopting a Golden Retriever who has been trained since birth but is unable to go the next level required for a full graduate assistant dog? They brought Tippa into the room and immediately she came to me and put her head on my lap and looked up at me with those beautiful brown eyes - and I fell in love! Tippa adopted my whole family with equal warmth, devotion and instant protection.

A Big Little Dog is the Perfect Fit

My grandson originally wanted a big dog but living in the city it would not be fair to the dog. So after much research and family discussion a breed of dog was decided upon - a miniature Schnauzer. This little puppy arrived bursting with energy, playfulness His happiness was infectious and this little dog was a perfect fit for the entire family. This little pure-bred miniature Schnauzer puppy moved in to his new home 2003. Shadow is his name. Shadow is a common name for black dogs but soon Shadow's personality made you realize that this Shadow was not common at all - but one of a kind and a very special Shadow. Rare Amami Rabbit is on the RED LIST

I saw a nature show that featured the Amami Rabbit and it's secret life. It was a heart wrenching story on Oasishd TV. It was part of the series called Wild Secrets. The episode was called, "Amami Rabbit: Rabbit of the Shadow" - be sure to watch it if it aires is in your area. This cute little black bunny only comes out of it's den at night and takes great precautions to avoid the many predators on this subtopical island home of dense old growth forest. This show held me captive as the narrator led me to where the Mom amami had her babies hidden. The kits do not live with their mother but are hidden in the woods. Suddenly the mothers stops running and starts digging into the ground until a hole developed and 2 tiny kits climbed out of this sealed den to quickly suckle and then they go back to their underground den. The mother pushed all the mud back into the hole and taps it down firmly to seal the hole and spread a few leaves and then goes off to leave her babies for another 24 hrs. Sealed away from killer snakes looking for a meal of baby bunnies. After seeing the plight of the Amami Rabbit I knew I had to write about it because now they have a problem worse than killer snakes - the killer snakes are nocturnal too so the rabbits know how to deal with them ---But MAN and the imported MONGOOSE was something new and deadly for the Amami Rabbit families! Put the social network to good use and help everyone to become aware of the plight of the Rare Amami Rabbit. I could only find 2 videos of this tiny rabbit. I hope they are not the last we will see.

I visited over 100 lenses to find the quality deserving of an Angel blessing. These lensmasters have put their heart into their creations and that is one of the reasons I sprinkled some special angel dust on them. The other way I decide whether the lens gets some angel dust is whether it holds my attention so that I scroll to the very end because it flows smoothly from one module to the next like a good story you want to see what is next. Don't miss reading deyani's lens - This lens is written in English & Bahasa Indonesia. I was very impressed with Resep Masakan Sunda Favorite Keluarga My other favorite topic was "Other Collections" ! It was very entertaining and I wished I could have blessed at least 20 - it was hard to just pick 10! So many excellent lenses in this neighbourhood.

#10 is to walk the Canadian Maritime Provinces My husbands roots go back to the 1700's in Nova Scotia. (my husband passed away many years ago) I would love to visit the areas in Nova Scotia that I have recorded on the Hamilton-Putnam family tree with Ellen (my husband's sister) and any/all of the family with Hamilton-Putnam blood surging through their veins. Why do I want to walk on the same ground that my husband's family once walked? When you do this with other family members who are connected to this family line it is exciting, powerful and deeply connecting so that you can pass it forward to future generations. I did this in Sweden by visiting the villages that my Grandparents lived in and it was overwhelming emotionally and cemented my connection to Sweden forever. All 3 Maritime provinces are important to travel through to get the complete picture of history in the 1700's up to our day. My wish is to tour Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island during the peak autumn colours in the Fall.

Seniors sharing their 'rain-barrel' memories: The most common reaction when I asked about their 'rain-barrel' memories was: "Yes, we always had a rain barrel and the water was used to water our plants and to wash our hair. We loved using rain water to wash our hair because it left our hair so shiny and silky!" Then I talked to Jean and she had a story where rain collected into multiple rain barrels was a matter of survival. She grew up in a small prairie town in SW Manitoba during the 1930's.. The town did not have any drinking water. They had to walk a quarter of a mile to a place that had a pump with good water and pack it in buckets to their home. That water was very precious so it was only used for drinking and for cooking food. for the rest of their water needs they relied on the rain they could collect in their rain barrels. Not a drop of water was ever wasted. Do we appreciate what a precious gift we have in water? What are we doing to recycle the rain?

May 1910 our Great-grandfather Dodd (left photo) and his wife Cora boarded the BX Sternwheeler at Soda Creek, BC bound for Fort George,BC Entry from Thomas Dodd's diary starting at Soda Creek, BC: Tuesday, 24 May 1910 - hot and fine. Got room - Bridal chamber on BX Boat. Wednesday, 25 May - On the boat. Paid for fare to Quesnel - $8.00 Saturday, 28 May - Camping at Quesnel. Many people are camping and waiting to get us to Ft George. The river is hagh and the boats are on the bum. The Charlott is sunk. The BX had not got down to working right. The Chillicoton is being repaired by order of the boat inspector and the public is being held up. I got a piece of bear meat from an Indian, it was fine eating. Monday, 30 May - We tore up camp and got a berth on the Quesnel Boat. Paid for 2 tickets to Ft. George - $25.00 Friday, 3rd June 1910 Landed at Ft George at 10pm. Total expenses to come to Ft George from N. Dak. $371.70

I Cannot Hear You

"Some 28 million Americans and 350 million people worldwide live with hearing loss," says psychologist Myers in his book A Quiet World: Living with Hearing Loss Sept 16, 2010 I went stone deaf for about an hour - then a faint sound returned and I could hear a person speak if they spoke directly to me and very slow. Even then they sounded far away. (I notice that I am trying to lip read already!) My Dr app is next week Sept 27. My hearing is very impaired and I am hoping for a easy, quick fix. In the meantime I am learning the panic situations of hearing loss. The hundreds of safety issues that we deal with on a day to day basis. Any verbal warnings given from behind are totally ignored because they are not heard at all. People who talk too fast suddenly sound like they are speaking a strange language. "I can't hear you - please talk slower." They lower their voice and talk just as fast. Which leads me to wanting to isolate myself from people. I know I can't do this - so I went out for lunch with a group - The waitress rattled off the lunch special for the day. "I'm sorry, I didn't hear you." She then repeated it even faster. One of my friends tried to help me and I decided on the one item I was able to make out what it was. By the time I arrived home I was exhausted and near tears as I know I missed at least 95% of the conversation. This past week I have learned the harsh reality of the words "I cannot hear you!" ......to be continued after my visit to the Doctor I CAN HEAR! A very kind and persistant doctor restored my hearing. After many, many attempts to syringe my ears with lukewarm water the large layer of wax finally came loose and I could hear once again. With both ears becoming sealed with wax it was the cause of my deafness. Lesson learned - never, never take your hearing for granted. Always, always show compassion and empathy for anyone who has hearing loss. Talk Louder; Slower and Directly
