Legally Blind Golfer

When my husband was 42 years old, he was told he was legally blind. At that time, he was driving a UPS delivery truck. Our children were 12 and 18. It was a scary time.

And yet, in the 20 years since his diagnosis, he has continued to be an inspiration to all of us. A former golf professional and semi-pro baseball player in his youth, Whitey's positive attitude and sense of humor continue day after day.

He was inducted into both the Erskine Athletic Hall of Fame and the York County Athletic Hall of Fame! He's our hero!

Note: Photo is Whitey, our son Randy, and our grandson, Zachary. Zach loves to go to the driving range with his "Poppy"!

How to Set Goals with Pictures

Set your goals and dreams in a different way! Using pictures from magazines and cut-out words, you can create a picture of your goal/dream. It's fun, it's easy, it's effective! You certainly need to give this technique a try -- make at least one page and see what happens. Experiment! Be bold!

And remember to teach your children to set goals also!

Congo Squares - A Tate Family Tradition

In 1954, the Tate family lived in Pendleton, SC. I can almost smell the congos in the oven. We loved to gather round and "lick the bowl" while they baked! Mama always made congos for church picnics, long trips in the car to visit relatives, and of course at Christmastime.

Note: "Lick the bowl" involved using a long wooden spoon to scrape the bowl of unused dough and eating it -- yes, uncooked!

How to Make Your Own Family Cookbook

My sister, Betty Tate DeLorme, presented our family with a family cookbook in 1983. She had patiently typed every word on a Royal Manual Typewriter. In this day we have computers, and creating your own family cookbook is much faster - and easier!

You can type your cookbook on your computer and take to the local print shop for printing and binding. There are also companies that specialize in producing your family cookbook - see the link list below.

Ask relatives to e-mail you special family recipes.

The most important thing is to do it! Make it fancy and professional. Or let it be a family project and let your children help create your cookbook and simply place the pages in 3 ring binders or folders.

Attention Scrapbookers! -- this is a perfect scrapbook project!

Our family cookbook is well-loved by all of us. It is my hope that you will start creating your own today!

PS: Make some extra copies. Over 20 years later, we still ask Betty for reprints for wedding gifts and hostess gifts and special gifts for our friends.

PPS: Click Here to write and sell your own cookbook!

Tate Family Reunion - A Lesson by Example

The Tate Family Reunion started in 2000. We did not know each other well, were scattered all over the USA, and some folks we had not seen since childhood. A small group of us decided it needed to happen -- and it did!

We have learned by trial and error. Things we thought might flop worked - and some things we thought would be wonderful were huge flops! So come along and learn with us before you plan your reunion! Use our experience to springboard your fantastic reunion! We know we have the best one anywhere! Come back and tell us about yours!

I first met Kate Loving Shenk at Pat O'Bryan's Portable Empire University. Since that time, she has become one of my dearest on-line friends. Though we have never met in person, we visit weekly via telephone as members of the same wonderful Master Mind Group. Kate's conversations, encouragement, and writing inspire me.

Kate's book is called Transport Your Nursing Career and Discover Your Calling and Destiny
After reading Kate's book, one reader said, "Kate Loving Shenk's perspective on the nursing profession is rich, fresh, and incredibly important. Her truths, her seeking for answers, her urgencies are a tremendous contribution to the medical profession as well as our times. This memoir can enhance every one's faith as they approach a time when they must entrust themselves to the hospital experience and the angels they hope to find there. " Sydney Kissinger

I hope, if I ever need a nurse, God will provide one as loving and caring as Kate!

I talked about it so much that my friends and I decided to go back about 5 years later. The only place I would recommend for this adventure is Dolphin Research Center in Marathon, Florida. They genuinely love and care for the dolphins. Visit their website in the link list below.

How to Write Your Personal History

Do you have a diary or a journal?

One of the items I treasure most is my mom's diary -- from the year she met my dad. After they met, each page has only one word scrawled across it -- Happy. Every page. If you flipped through mom's diary, you would only see happy, happy, happy, happy, happy! What a treasure!

It makes me wonder what piece of my own history my children will treasure. Join me as I investigate writing my own personal history.

Photo is my dad's family. Do my adult children know the family stories? I am glad we have family reunions on that side of the family. I know they have at least heard some of the stories. I hope they remember some of the tales they have been told.

We were a family of four children back in 1953. Each one of us four years apart. Our father did accounting, obviously planning for college days in the future! :)

Our baby brother and our parents died years ago. But the 3 of us have survived. And here we are -- on the internet! Now who on earth could have dreamed such a thing in 1953?

Mac Frampton was a member of my class at Erskine College in Due West, SC, in 1962. In those days, we would sit in awe as he played piano for our chapel services. We all knew that one day he would be very famous for his amazing talent. And of course, he is! What a powerful entertainer! Mac's music will touch your soul.

Billboard Magazine called him "an immensely talented pianist, at home in a wide variety of musical settings." The Atlanta Constitution wrote: "How one man can bring the rafters down in Symphony Hall as if a full orchestra were playing is a feat in itself. It's consummate musicianship. Electrifying!"

My husband is legally blind. He does have a little vision. He is not "in the dark", but is unable to recognize people, read or drive a car.

The purpose of this site is to alert you to the most common mistakes people make when dealing with visually impaired folk.

Seabrook Island, South Carolina

Seabrook island is located about 25 miles from Charleston, South Carolina.

There is an abundance of protected wildlife at Seabrook. Watch the deer and the alligators. How many deer can you spot at sundown? Admire the many bird species. See foxes dart through the neighborhoods.

I personally enjoy sitting on the back screened porch of our favorite home at daybreak -- drinking coffee and watching the animals start their day.

Notes from my blog last summer:
My sister and I are visiting Seabrook Island, SC. In the past 24 hours we have seen -- from our front row seats on the screened porch facing Gator Lake -- a fox, ten deer, one big turtle, a house wren who sang for us, four cardinals, a woodpecker, blue jays, crows, squirrels and numerous colorful butterflies.

The biggest thrill was seeing the alligators! Our first visitor was a medium sized one. Later we spotted a huge gator a little further down the lake. Today we have enjoyed watching a small gator, obviously a baby or a teenager. The gators are fascinating creatures. We have listened to the sounds of nature and watched patiently for our next visitor.

Later as we sat on the beach, we watched seven dolphins, a dozen pelicans, a lone sandpiper, and of course the seagulls.

Each creature sighting moved us more into the flow of God's Divine Order, and to a more restful place inside us. It was as if each visitor brought its own gift of peace. We have moved out of the rat race of everyday life and into a zone of nature. What a joy! We are most thankful for each of our special visitors! And we appreciate being here, on this beautiful island for these few days! This has been an experience of appreciation for the abundance and variety in nature and we are filled with awe and gratitude!

This chowder is wonderful on those cold winter nights! It's easy to make and serves a family of four easily. I always double the recipe and share with neighbors.

Have a soup night drop in! Make 3-4 kinds of soups and chowders and invite the neighbors to drop by for a bowl of soup. My friend, Tammy, does this on Christmas Eve. Great to have plenty of hot food ready for all to enjoy!

PS - This is even better as a left-over! So make the day before you plan to serve!

Erma Bombeck was a delightfully funny writer, who identified with all of us who were trying to raise our families in the late 60's and early 70's. We clipped her columns, posted them to the front of the refrigerator, shared them with our friends and laughed -- and then laughed some more! In fact, I think one of Erma's best gifts was teaching us to laugh at ourselves, at our daily "crises".

Yo-Yos and Hula Hoops - fun with the oldest toys on earth!

In the Phillippines, yo-yo translates as "come back". Some people believe that the yo-yo was created to be used as a weapon. That theory is not true. Pedro Flores, who was originally from the Phillippines, started selling the toy in the United States with the name Yo-Yo. His company, Flores' Yo-Yo Company was bought out by Duncan, who copyrighted the name, Yo-yo.
The yo-yo is often referred to as the second oldest toy in history, second only to the doll.

Interesting fact: The earliest surviving yo-yo dates to 500 BC. A Greek vase shows a boy playing with a yo-yo.

Positive Thought in Daily Life

As a member of a small Unity study group for almost twenty years, I was very familiar with the power of keeping our thoughts positive and upbeat. Then, a few years ago, The Secret was published, and The Secret DVD seemed to be on everybody's television. It is indeed a pleasure to participate and watch as our society moves to a more positive place. It seems everywhere I go, someone is talking about The Secret, or chatting about ways to improve their thoughts. This lens simply focuses on some of my favorite things in the Law of Attraction/Secret/Positive Thinking Realm. I know you will enjoy each one of these items.

Wagener, South Carolina, is a small town near the capital city of South Carolina - Columbia, SC. Wagener is in Aiken County. We lived in Wagener for 5 years in the 1970's. We had a delightful time and made wonderful friendships there.

I attached this old photo of my friend Margie and me! We always have fun! Laughter and cherished friends seem to mark my Wagener experience! Isn't that a lovely way to remember a part of your life?

Grandma's on Squidoo!

Can senior citizens learn to use squidoo? Of course! As a group I will admit that we are -generally speaking- a technically challenged group. I am still learning how to use my mobile telephone and have not even started to learn to text. But I love the internet and want to create web pages. How can I create web pages when I know nothing about html or design? The simplest way -- Squidoo!

We seniors have a perfect opportunity to offer a lifetime of lessons to those who come along behind us. Finding subject matter is not an issue for seniors. We love to talk to anyone who will listen, right?

Squidoo is easy, fun, and a good way to make some extra cash to supplement retirement funds and social security. And the forum is a great place to meet some super nice folks.

Let's build some lenses!

Songs for Family Singalong

Does your family sing together? What songs are you teaching your children?
It seems we have been singing since early childhood! We are not accomplished vocalists. We sing for the pure joy of singing!
It is my hope that some of the songs on this lens will jiggle your memory and remind you of songs to teach your children -- and that you will have great fun singing together for many years!

Horses - Horse Books and Toys for Children

We begin our love of horses with a rocking horse. Isn't a rocking horse is one of the first things we buy for our children? Humans and horses have enjoyed each other for centuries.
So it is natural when our little ones want to play with stuffed horses, read stories about horses, visit, feed and watch horses. I have chosen some of my favorite books and toys about horses just for you.
Enjoy!
P. S. My son arranged for my sister and I to ride a horse a couple of years ago. First time for us seniors -- and on our "bucket list"! What a thrill!

Grandma JJ's Favorite Books and Toys for Children

And why Grandma JJ's favorites?
My grandchildren call me Joan-Joan -- and we love to read and play with toys.

You will also notice that there are very few electronic toys. We try to focus on toys that require physical action and imagination. If your family is creative and craft-oriented, you might want to build your own toys!

York, SC - Small town America

York is the County Seat of York County, SC.

Take a little walk in downtown York and you hear music. You really do! A charming old/new city, the town is filled with history ---and with family friendships that also go back for years and years. Beautiful old homes, huge trees, and lovely gardens are just a small part of this wonderful little town. York is the kind of town where everybody speaks to you when you walk down the street. Eat in a local restaurant and visit with folks you have not seen in a while.

Toys and Books About Dogs

Children seem to love all animals naturally-- dogs, cats, horses, rabbits -- but especially dogs. Dogs and puppies! They love to read about them, play with them, chase and be chased by them, play with pretend models, sleep with soft fluffy ones or real ones, and draw and color them. Find your favorite toy dogs and books about dogs below. Remember to tell us about your toy dogs and books in the comment section at the end.

What should you wear to work?

Dress codes continually change. It's hard to know what is appropriate for work and what is not. Do check with your employer if you have any questions.

This site is simply to give you some ideas and a way to think through your reasons for dressing the way that you do.

Thank you to my sister, Betty DeLorme, for the text content of this page. The notes were taken from a workshop she presented for her employer recently.

How to Scramble Eggs

Hello! Someone told me that you need to know how to scramble eggs! You are in the right place!

Eggs-- one of the first things we learn to cook! Scrambling eggs is fast, it's easy and it's filling. On our own for the first time, we search for quick and easy things to do. We want real food -- like Mama used to make. Scrambled eggs, baked potatoes, corn on the cob are all great for beginner cooks.
These simple instructions are from your internet grandma!

Thank you Savage__Dave at Flickr for photo of happy eggs!
