Squidoo : Lenses by Myn

I LOVE filmmaking. The process, the art, the industry. I'm not involved with it, I just watch from the sidelines. After having paid 10 bucks for a ticket!
I also enjoy reading and writing erotic... friction! :-D Sometimes I write it in the first person, sometimes third person, and I've even written it from a male perspective! Which isn't as... ahem... hard as it sounds, because I like girls too. ;-) You can see more about me on my Myspace profile,

Buffy the Vampire Slayer

Buffy Summers was once a normal high school girl- cuter and sassier than average, but normal nonetheless. That was before she got the news that she was the new Chosen One- the one human destined to fight for humanity against the evils of the undead. Now instead of dances and cheerleading, it's demons and chupacabra for this popular girl, and she'd better get a grip on her new status (and a big, fat stake!) if she doesn't want to wind up as a vamp snack!

Buffy the Vampire Slayer began as the sleeper television hit of the '90s, and its cult following is reaching epidemic proportions. And proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that Buffy is a BABE!

The Perfect Storm Film Review

In the Fall of 1991 a hurricane collided with two storms, forming the perfect storm, off the coast of Gloucester, Massachuetts. What ensued was the strongest storm in recorded history and yachts and fishing boats were caught up in it. Back on land, their lovers and relatives waited for them.

This movie means well and the rescue scenes with the Coast Guard and Air Force are intense. Petersen achieves his aim of showing the sheer heroics of the rescue teams who risk their lives in impossible conditions to save others. They truly are heroes but the movie is let down in other areas. Corny dialogue thrives and Mastrantonio and Lane overact constantly (it's good to see some things never change). And you just know that the two guys who hate each other are going to have the chance to save each other and work together. But the situation is extreme and the working class guys, led by Clooney, on the sword fishing boat, Andrea Gail, are sympathetic and interesting enough to hold your interest.

The special effects are amazing and you feel like you should be drenched by the end of the movie. Sadly, it just doesn't quite come together. Still, it's worth seeing.

Starring George Clooney, Mark Wahlberg, Diane Lane, John C, Reilly, Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio, William Fichtner.

Dogma Film Review

I'd forgotten how much I loved this movie but when I bought it as an impulse buy and had the DVD in my hot little hands I managed to watch it 3 times in 48 hours, which I think is telling. Now before I embark on my glowing review I think it only fair to point out that Dogma isn't for everyone. This is a movie where Alanis Morrisette plays God and our heroes are attacked by a giant monster made of poo. People who are offended by such things (and you know who you are) should obviously steer clear.

Damon and Affleck play fallen angels Loki and Bartleby whose plan to get back to heaven will destroy the world if they succeed. Now it just wouldn't do to have them negating existence willy nilly, so a rag-tag bunch of humans, prophets, and various celestial beings go all scooby-gang to save the day (and every day thereafter).

The concept is original and the script is great, combining irreverent humour with Christian mythology (a term God hates apparently) and pop-culture references to create a film that is both chaotic and simplistic. It is after all, a good versus evil fable.

X-Men Film Review

It may look like it, but X Men isn't just a special effects movie. The effects are amazing but the underlying theme of tolerance, retained from the comic series, is the most impressive thing about the movie.

Mankind just doesn't understand mutants (superior to humans, they are born with a unique mutation) and US Senator Robert Kelly (Davison) wants mutants named and exposed. Charles Xavier (Stewart) runs a school for young (and amazing looking) mutants to control their powers and use them for good. These students become X Men (Berry, Marsden and Janssen) and, although they are feared and hated by them, they must save mankind from mutant supremist Magneto (McKellan) who wants to eliminate mankind because he believes that mankind and mutants can't live together.

Things really get nasty when Xavier takes in Wolverine (Jackman) and Rogue (Paquin) and Magneto wants them for his own evil plan. Jackman is impressive as the tough Wolverine and Patrick Stewart is, well, Patrick Stewart. McKellan is perfect as Magneto, who has just had enough of humans.

The X Men are suitably gorgeous but the usually dependable Berry is a bit wooden. Maybe the effects stunned her and she just wanted to be in a big budget movie. The movie looks fantastic (and expensive) and the message is for minorities to hold out for hope because the ignorant people in power will come around eventually and everyone will be united. If only....

American Beauty Film Review

Upon discovering Alan Ball's screenplay the good folk at Dreamworks must have been positively drooling. American Beauty is an extraordinary and sharply written film. The viewer is thrown into the crumbling life of Lester Burnham (Spacey), just as daughter Jane's (Birch) friend, the lusty Angela (Suvari), acts as a catalyst for the mother of all mid life crises, involving sex, drugs, and a Pontiac Firebird.

Once Lester decides to turn his life around we are left to watch the proverbial magic unfold. There is no plot to American Beauty, no story that can be succinctly relayed in 25 words or less. Rather, it is a slice of time in which major changes are occurring in the lives of Lester and those around him. Each character evolves as the film progresses, and as each of their lives intertwine you find yourself evermore engrossed in the suburban drama unfolding.

American Beauty is nothing if not character-driven, and when a movie relies on character development rather than special effects or cute teen stars (although, technically both are present) you need a stellar cast. No problems here. Both Spacey and Benning are deserving of their Oscar nominations and the support cast is just as fabulous. A tagline that implores the viewer to 'look closer' would be well heeded.

This isn't an actual porn lens, but I didn't feel right classifying it anything less than an X and in the Adult category. Though I was tempted to put it under Do It Yourself!

As I entered the fruit shop I noticed how quiet it was. Not only was I the only customer present but I was the only one there at all. As I picked through a choice selection of cherries and tasted one to see how succulent they were I could hear grunting from the back store room. I stopped to look at what the sound was from when the finely sculptured figure of a man walked through the door carrying two of the biggest watermelons I'd ever seen on each of his tanned muscular shoulders. He wore nothing but boots, shorts and a grocers apron.

The Skulls Film Review

When I decided to see this flick I thought "Here we go again, another teen flick" But in fact, it was a good watch.

There were all the good old elements that make a film a hit; Action, Emotion, Sex, Babes for both genders and a few slight gruesome actions. The film shows the life of Luke McNamara (Jackson), a uni student, who is chosen to be in a Secret Society called " The Skulls".

Everyone knows The Skulls exist but there is a silence requirement and therefore no one can prove its existence. When Luke gets picked as one to join them, he is required along with a team others to complete a task to be accepted. Once accepted, Luke enjoys the luxuries that The Skulls provide. He is issued a 'Soul mate', Caleb (Paul Walker).

But suspicion grows when his best friend is killed and he believes his soul mate is to blame. Luke struggles to seek justice in this bizarre thriller and retrieve his old life...

It's an old, old fantasy: two women, one man, making love in joyful abandon. I can't remember how long ago the potent picture entered my mind: one woman straddling my cock, a second woman straddling my mouth, and all three of us consumed by pleasure. But I'll never forget the stormy summer evening when that lingering fantasy at last became a delightful reality -- or the love with which Sandra and Louise gave me, and themselves, that memory...

Being John Malkovich Film Review

The thing they don't tell you about this film is that the man himself has very little screen time. I was expecting a lot more slapstick, the humorous repercussions of Malkovich being unable to control himself. But this movie is far too noble for that. Being John Malkovich is the weirdest film I have ever seen, hands down. And therein lies its charm. When Charlie Sheen appears as John Malkovich's best friend you know you've stumbled upon something quirky to say the least.

Dedicated puppeteer Craig Schwartz (Cusack) is forced to get a 'real job' and the fact that his office is on the 7 1/2 floor is not the weirdest thing about it. It also has a portal that you can climb through and experience life as Malkovich for 15 minutes before being flung out near a highway. The portal is certainly a key driver of the plot but so to are the twisted relationships between Craig, his wife Lotte (Diaz), and their mutual love interest Maxine (Keener), a manipulative wench if ever there was one. The performances in this film are outstanding, Diaz in particular shows some strength playing a character who is anything but glamorous. And of course there's a certain fascination watching Malkovich play himself.

Any Given Sunday Film Review

Oliver Stone has the most frustrating habit of turning the women in his movies (if he even has any) into monsters and Any Given Sunday (another of his message movies) is no exception.

This is an interesting film and the performances are excellent but I find Stone the most annoying director. As with his other films he feels the need to constantly show off with flashy camera techniques that don't really contribute anything to the film. And his theme of warriors fighting a ruthless enemy makes it seem like Platoon on the football field. Tony D'Amato (Pacino), coach of the Miami Sharks, is feeling the pressure from the team's owner, Christina Pagniacci (Diaz) who, we are told a thousand times, doesn't run the team the way her father did. The Sharks have lost four games in a row, their aging star quarterback (Quaid) is injured and Christina only cares about the financial benefits of the game. When Willie Beamen (Foxx) gets his chance as the team's quarterback and becomes an instant celebrity tensions flare between the other players, Tony and Christina.

Stone clearly despises the way sport has been corrupted by money and his other messages are that experience is worth more than youth and teamwork can accomplish anything. They are worthy messages told in a loud, slick film that is really held together by the amazing performances from the whole cast.

The film takes a while to get into and Quaid is wasted. There are a lot of on field action shots so be warned if you hate football. My Stone prejudices aside, Any Given Sunday is worth a look.

Double Jeopardy Film Review

The premise to this film is highly original but you can't help but feel more could've been done with it. Libby Parsons (Judd) is living a suburban dream with a supposedly adoring husband. Right up until she lands in prison for his murder, after he gets together with her best friend to frame her. They then collect the $2 million in insurance and run off together with her son. How's that for a knife in the back? Never fear, for our heroine learns from a fellow inmate the joys of double jeopardy, a law that states you can't be convicted twice for the same crime. Translation? When she's out of the big house she can kill the slimy bastard consequence free.

Now you might be thinking I've been a bad little film critic and spoilt the twist for you but you find this all out in the first part of the movie. You can find it out just from the trailer for Pete's sake. Not to mention the title... And that's the problem really. When you put the twist, the little trick that makes your movie special, at the beginning, the rest becomes a regular action flick. This film had the dreaded p-word ('potential' for the uninitiated) but never quite lived up to it.
