What is reality? Is my reality your reality?

What does it mean to be human? Where, if anywhere, do we draw a line between the value of real and artificial life? In Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?, author Philip K Dick asks what qualities, if any, are unique to humans and questions just what it is that we define as being human.

In examining these questions, this novel provides a brilliant pause for reflection on the meaning of human life and our responsibility for the environment that we are so determined to destroy.

99 Cent Mystery Books For Your Kindle or eReader

If you have a Kindle or any other e-reader, and if you like reading mystery books you will like this list. There are some books online that are available for download no more than 99 cents. It does not get any better than this. With just a click, there you have it on your e-reader.

I still love holding the book and flip the pages in the traditional way, but I find the e-readers extremely practical. Especially if you are like me and usually read more than one book at a time, an e-reader makes things so much easier. Everything is in one place. This is especially good when you are on a trip. It saves you so much room. I recently discover these 99 cent mystery books and I am getting a kick out of them. In this economy, when it is hard to spare a few bucks for our hobbies and leisure time, these books come to the rescue.

Marion Zimmer Bradley introduced us to Darkover in 1958, the fictional world lasting beyond her death.

So many Darkovan tales have been out of print, or lost, but now you don't have to travel to Darkover to pick up these classics from MZB. You can get them for your Kindle for incredibly cheap prices!

Earlier works have been reissued and literary collaborators have continued the series. The world of Darkover lives on.

Action Figures aren't dolls, far from it. They represent traditional masculine traits and boys just love them. My nephews certainly do.

While you see them marketed as a childrens' toys, action figures have grown wide acceptance and immense popularity as an adult collector item. Some action figures are intended solely as adult collectibles. Jake in his chair is both!

I want one of these, Jake Sully in his wheelchair.

What's Your Mayan Calendar Prophecy?

There are many theories and prophecies about what's going to happen to us all on Dec 21, 2012. You've heard them all even though no one can agree on the actual date of the end of the Mayan Calendar.

The Mayan Calendar's "Long Count Date" has already happened - at least in terms of truth winning over illusion within the general consciousness. It occurred in 1986 concurrently with the Harmonic Convergence that brought the general level of consciousness of humanity "over the line" that demarcates truth and falsehood.

There's no need to be concerned about what might happen on Dec 21, 2012, because the end of the Mayan Calendar has already occurred; the 'dawn of a new era' actually began 25 years ago, and you didn't even notice!

Upton Sinclair - Muckraker

We look to muckrakers to protect us and Upton Sinclair was one of the finest. He is of that grand company which includes Charles Dickens, Harriet Beecher Stowe and Rachel Carson.

Sinclair dedicated his life to agitation for social justice.

In The Jungle (1906) his muckraking not only showed how big business held consumers in contempt, but how they ceaselessly took advantage of workers.

Sinclair personally sent a copy of his book to then American President Theodore Roosevelt. Harshly critical of the capitalist industrialist system, it led to meat inspection legislation and the Pure Food and Drug Act of 1906.

99 Cent Science Fiction Books For Your Kindle or eReader

E-readers brought new life to books. Now it is easy to download e-books for your Kindle, Wi-Fi, Graphite, 6" Display with New E Ink Pearl Technology or any other e-reader you have. As science fiction is one of the most popular genres in the world of fiction, I found some high rated 99 cent books for you to consider.

What are we talking about exactly when we talk about Science Fiction? It is one of those genres that has a tons of other sub-genres. "Author and editor Damon Knight summed up the difficulty by stating that "science fiction is what we point to when we say it", a definition echoed by author Mark C. Glassy, who argues that the definition of science fiction is like the definition of pornography: you don't know what it is, but you know it when you see it. "(WIKIPEDIA)

To make the long story short, science fiction is basically a realistic prediction of future possibilities. This is probably the biggest reason why it is as popular as it is, because first off, we love predictions, or speculations to be more precise. And secondly, we are intrigued because it involves life on earth, and also other places.

The Left Hand of Darkness, by Ursula K Le Guin, is an absolute classic in every sense. It's a beautifully crafted book, and paints an alien, utterly compelling world inhabited by characters who reveal something fundamental about humanity.

The great achievement of The Left Hand of Darkness is the creation of a new society of truly equal human beings. It is her depth of thought, emotional involvement, strong moral values, and philosophical thinking that place Le Guin among the very top contemporary science-fiction writers.

Almost one hundred years ago, in February 1912, Edgar Rice Burroughs brought to the world a wondrous story of adventures on another planet, the novel "Princess of Mars".

John Carter, gentleman and war veteran, finds his true calling in life as a warrior-savior of Mars. After fierce battles with various alien creatures, mythological beasts and sundry humanoids, he wins the hand of the beautiful princess, Dejah Thoris. That story influenced generations of sci-fi fans, artists and filmmakers and was a constant companion in my childhood.

Still from the film 'John Carter'

I grew up with the smell of my grandmother making fried cornbread for dinner. I could hardly wait to get a piece when it came steaming out of the oven. She had a huge cast iron skillet that always fascinated me; it was round and each piece was the shape of a slice of pie. I would cut the bread open and slather on butter. I still remember the taste of my mamaw's cornbread even though I haven't had a slice in a few years. Mine never comes out as good as her's did. Maybe you will have a better outcome with this southern traditional recipe than I do. There are a few recipe options on this page for you to experiment with. Happy baking!

Sam Worthington does it again!

In Clash of the Titans Sam is another hybrid creature who rejects his stronger, more powerful half in favour of the underdog half.

This time he is Perseus, the son of a human mother and of Zeus, Lord of the Sky, but he identifies with his fellow mortals rather than with the gods of Olympus.

Please don't confuse this film with the original from 1981. Above all, please don't confuse Clash of the Titans with Greek Mythology. The names of characters and mythic creatures have been retained but that's about all.

Legends are meant to be played with, especially with CGI.

If you have a science fiction fan on your gift list, here's a few ideas for presents.

I'm a science fiction fan and I know what I would like to get on gift-giving occasions.

A couple of posters, I want the covers from those old magazines spread across my living room wall. I'd like some pseudo-scientific knick knackery for my desk and a good coffee cup to sip from as I watch some old classic 1950s movies and those excellent early television series.

There are a couple of books that I would really like but haven't got around to buying for myself, books which are collections of science fantasy art and books which examine the "science" in the popular science fiction of today.

I also want a robot!

Did you grow up in the 1950s?

With no television shows for children, scarcely any books aimed at young readers and parents who strictly supervised my books, it's a wonder I learned to read at all.

But learn to read I did. There's no stronger incentive to read than the urge to finish a good story. My favourite stories were from magazines of science fiction and fantasy.

They seem so naive now, perfectly innocent reading, and I still thoroughly enjoy the old sci-fi classics. My parents need not have worried, at university I majored in English.

District 9

District 9 is a twist on the classic science fiction story of alien invasion.

The image of the giant saucer hanging over the city we've seen often enough, but this spacecraft is nothing like Independence Day or the television series V. It's not hanging over New York, or London but over Johannesburg, and these particular alien visitors arrive on Earth not as conquerors, but as starving, demoralised refugees. They are forced into a corporation-run refugee camp, where their growing numbers present a massive strain on post-apartheid society.

It's a fine debut film from South African director Neill Blomkamp and extends allegory to its real-world context, where memories of the townships are still very fresh. Like any good sci-fi, it's an allegorical exploration of human society and, although it tackles the ghosts of an apartheid past, the message is universal.

In the small Alaskan town of Beaver Mills preparations are underway for the annual celebration of the Summer Solstice but, amidst the festivities, a horror is unleashed. A Wyvern awakes from its prison of ice.

The ravaging Wyvern goes on a bloody rampage as the townsfolk try desperately to escape.

This movie should be dismal. Curiously, it's very good. Surely a dragon swooping from the heavens, dropping a mutilated moose in a hot tub, ripping open cars like sardine cans and leaving bits and pieces of human anatomy left, right and centre is a bit over the top? No, what saves it is low-key acting, fabulous CGI and the Alaskan landscape.

You'll find plenty of references to Northern Exposure in Wyvern too. Including some of the actors.

The Navigator - a Medieval Odyssey

The Navigator, a Medieval Odyssey, defies genre, mixing fantasy and science fiction, religion and mysticism, historical realism and modern adventure, to create a compelling, beautiful, visually stunning leap of faith.

In a surreal montage of fire, water, earth and rushing wind, it creates and sustains its own logic, framing the story in the linear form of an ancient legend.

Wholly original and wholly engrossing.

Song of Ice and Fire

Game of Thrones, the first book in a Song of Ice and Fire,, has been translated by HBO into a television series. We're now looking at the second series.

Which one is better? The book or the HBO filmed version?

You can't really compare the two forms and you're often disappointed when you do. However, in the case of Ice and Fire, HBO are to be congratulated on their excellent rendition of this compelling saga.

Game of Thrones is set in the mythical land of Westeros and tells the story of the noble Stark family who become caught up in high court intrigue when patriarch Eddard becomes the king's new right-hand man. It's a brilliant series of novels and now it's a brilliant television production.
