No-Bake chocolate oatmeal cookies with peanut butter is a favorite recipe, one that nearly everyone loves. Did you say Dump Cake? Just to clarify, "dump" in the case of this dump cake recipe is used as a verb, as in "dump the ingredients into the pan." Sound messy? Not really. Sound simple? That's because it is simple, simple but oh, so tasty! While there are some variations to the dump cake recipe theme, this version, our family's favorite, uses cherry pie filling and crushed pineapple. Sometimes we top it with nuts, sometimes we don't. Sometimes I make a smaller version and that variation is described below. Dump cake is a great cake to take to a potluck or serve for a special occasion. Call me crazy, but I love loco moco! Loco moco is the name of a popular breakfast meal served in restaurants in the state of Hawaii. It's a true breakfast in a bowl, a meal high in protein, perfect for storing up energy before hitting the surf (or school, or even the office)! I'm not a surfer, but I know a thing or two about breakfast - and this is definitely an unusual breakfast food, at least in all places besides Hawaii. Turns out that back in 1949 a group of guys requested that the owner of their local favorite restaurant in Hilo, Hawaii, create a cheap meal for their breakfast. They requested a bowl of rice with a hamburger on top, covered in gravy and crowned with a fried egg. Their wish was her command and the rest, as they say, is history. The breakfast dish was so crazy they decided to call it "loco." "Moco" made a nice rhyme and loco moco was born. These days you'll find loco moco on the menu at many eateries in Hawaii and it's as popular as ever. If you can't make it to Hawaii for breakfast, you can do as I do and duplicate the dish at home. My version features brown rice, although the original has the sticky, white variety. If you prefer vegetarian, choose a veggie burger. If you can't do breakfast without ham or bacon, toss them in instead, or use a sausage patty instead of the hamburger. Oh, and don't limit loco moco to breakfast. It makes a great lunch or even a nice, easy supper meal-in-a-bowl. No matter how you stack it, loco moco is a great-tasting, very filling, totally Hawaiian comfort food meal. I love it!

Easter at our house, since I was a kid, has always included pink pickled eggs. They're fun, they're easy to make, they're pretty, they taste delicious, and it doesn't have to be Easter to make and enjoy them! Below you'll find my pickled eggs recipe. In case you're wondering, pickled eggs don't really taste like pickles. I'm not sure how to describe what they taste like, but "tangy" comes to mind. If you're not sure that you'd like them, pick up a can of beets at the store, dedicate a half-dozen eggs to the cause and give them a try. It'll be a fun experiment and you might end up loving the taste. Follow the simple instructions below. There's a photo gallery, too, so you can see how the eggs look as they progress through several days of pickling. I think they're best at day four or five (when they're really more purple than pink) so if you're planning these for Sunday dinner, start them on Tuesday or Wednesday. Enjoy!

Looking for a waterproof case for your Kindle? Good idea, especially if you're headed to the pool or to the beach, or if you're cooking with your Kindle in the kitchen. We've done the leg work for you and, indeed, our mission is to help you decide on the best waterproof cover for your Amazon Kindle. Recently, M-Edge released the Guardian waterproof Kindle case. By all reports it's a terrific case, and most definitely waterproof. The hard plastic, polymer cover is a custom fit for the latest-generation 6-inch Kindle 2 and the O-ring seal and four latches lock out water perfectly. Indeed, if you feel a need to read underwater, the Guardian will protect your Kindle to a depth of one meter. Some, however, have pointed out a flaw in the Guardian's design. While the keyboard, joystick, and navigational buttons are accessible through flexible areas in the case, the on-off switch at the top of the Kindle is not. Since it's the on-off button that's used to wake up the Kindle when it goes to sleep after a few minutes of non-use, this creates the need to open the case to access the switch. Oops! Not a good idea when you're in the water or on a windy, sandy beach. While some might see this switch issue as a minor hindrance, others won't like it at all. So, what about alternative waterproof cases for Kindle? Are others available? Or will the Guardian work just fine for you? The Art of J. C. Leyendecker

J.C. Leyendecker was an American illustrator who lived and painted during the first half of the 20th century. He became famous for his men's fashion advertisements, particularly those for Arrow shirts featuring the Arrow Collars Man, as well as his Saturday Evening Post magazine covers. Leyendecker preceded Norman Rockwell in that role and was, in fact, a friend and hero of Norman Rockwell. The artwork here is "Weapons For Liberty" one of Leyendecker's World War I posters featuring the Third Liberty Loan Campaign and the Boy Scouts of America. Easy Grilled Shish Kebab Recipe

In North America, a shish kebab is skewered meat cooked on a grill. There are many varieties of shish kebab, as well as many spellings of the name itself. We like to add vegetables to the skewer to create a healthy, balanced and even elegant meal on a skewer or stick. The main shish kebab (or kabob) recipe presented here is one of our family's favorite meals. Sometimes we use pork, other times chicken or beef, but we always cook these on our outside gas grill and usually serve them over a pilaf (or pillow) of rice. You can vary the meat and vegetables and even the type of rice to suit your family's preferences. Prefer vegetarian kabobs? Leave off the meat and you'll have a wonderful grilled vegetable treat. Weather not cooperating? You can even cook kabobs under your oven's broiler if you prefer. Shish kebab recipes are very simple to prepare, though it takes a few extra minutes to cube the vegetables and meat as well as an extra half-hour or so, at least, to for the meat to soak in the flavor of your favorite marinade. We'll talk more about those things as well as discuss shish kebab recipe variations below. Is your mouth watering? Why is the flag of the United States red, white, and blue? What are the significance of those colors? Traditionally, it is said that George Washington believed the stars were taken from the sky, the red from the British colors, and the white stripes signified the secession from the home country. It turns out that no official reason for the choice of the colors was recorded by the Continental Congress. It is true, though, that in 1782 the Congress of the Confederation chose red, white, and blue for the Great Seal of the United States and listed their meaning as white for purity and innocence, red for valor and hardiness, and blue for vigilance, perseverance, and justice. No matter what the original meaning of the colors, our "grand old flag," continues to represent patriotism and pride in the United States, land that we love, home of the free and the brave. The treatments we're going to talk about aren't quite as weird as the picture shows (in fact, nowhere near that weird), but they're kind of unusual. Thing is, they work. At least they work for some people and who's to say they won't work for you. Reports of success with alternative uses of products such as Preparation H and duct tape are anecdotal, but we think they may be worth a try. In fact, we've tried some of these ourselves and have been surprisingly pleased with the results. "He is risen!" "Cool!" That's not quite the traditional Easter greeting and response, but it's the one we use at our house ever since our rather precocious firstborn gave the "cool" response one Easter morning at our house many years ago. Indeed, the resurrection of Jesus is a pretty cool story, and I don't think He would mind that we refer to it that way. But how do we teach the resurrection story? Resurrection cookies, also called Easter story cookies or empty tomb cookies, are a wonderful tool to use to present the story of the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus Christ in a way that children can understand. With the children participating in making the cookies on the night before Easter, then opening the cookies on Easter morning and seeing that the cookies, like the tomb, are miraculously empty, it's an object lession that will stick with a child for a very long time. You spoke, Amazon listened and is improving the Kindle wireless reader to make it even more easily usable for the blind and visually-impaired as well as those with other learning disabilities such as dyslexia. The features that make Kindle so popular as an aid for the blind include the choice of large font size, converting any book quickly and easily to a large print edition, and its "Read to Me" text to speech feature which is especially helpful to dyslexic readers. Additionally, the e-ink paper-like display, with no back lighting, makes reading easier on the eyes, so much better than a back-lit computer screen. Based on input from appreciative Kindle users, additional improvements that are in the works include an audible menu system and a super-size font, twice as large as Kindle's current largest font. According to Kindle VP Ian Freed, "With some key modifications, we believe Kindle can be a breakthrough device for the blind, and the team is excited about making these enhancements." Watch for Kindle's adaptive technology for the blind to be implemented by summer 2010. I have (make that HAD) cancer and I'm gearing up for a fight (make that STILL FIGHTING). I have become a cancer warrior. I've decided to share my battle with anal cancer here for a few reasons. First, I believe prayer is the most powerful weapon there is and I want to give people an opportunity to pray with and for me. Second, I've learned a whole lot since my recent diagnosis and I want to share some of this newfound knowledge; knowledge is power and there might be others out there who need some empowerment about and awareness of anal cancer. Third, when you get a cancer diagnosis things start happening really fast and I want a place to try to help keep track of what's going on. "Anyone But Obama!" is leading in presidential polls. Agree? This page is for you! According to the (satirical) news site, The Onion, this "Nobama 2012" sign is currently the frontrunner in the 2012 Republican presidential candidate race, beating out the likes of Mitt Romney for the likelihood of receiving the party's nomination. While the sign might indeed be more likeable than Newt Gingrich, we're not so sure that it qualifies to hold office. For one thing, that poster board doesn't look old enough, which brings up a very important question: Does it have a birth certificate? In light of the sign's appeal and direct message, the idea of voting for a "Nobama" certainly seems to be something that the majority of Americans may actually be considering. A recent Rasmussen Daily Presidential Tracking Poll shows that President Obama's approval ratings have resumed their dive following the temporary bump after Osama bin Laden was killed. Clearly the majority of citizens have to be entertaining the idea of "No Obama," if not considering throwing their support behind a "Nobama." Indeed, anti-Obama sentiment is growing almost as fast as the national debt! But what about the Republicans? Will the party produce a true, viable contender for the nomination rather than just a "Nobama," i.e. "anybody but Obama"? Is that man or woman already in the race or is he or she still weighing options, preparing to throw his or her hat into the political ring? Does the person who can draw widespread support and a majority of voters even exist? Only time will tell for sure, but in the meantime we're here to talk about Nobama. Oreo and Dandy are inside cats who have never partaken in the pleasure of the pursuit of winged prey. They're certainly attracted to birds, though; that's obvious when they watch them through the window. Once there was a lensmaster named Susan52 who met a lensmaster named SusanVillasLewis. Online, that is. They had more in common than just their names and when the opportunity arose to meet in person, they did. What fun! They live a state apart, but when SusanVillasLewis was chosen to participate in Seth Godin's "Don't Go To Business School" internship at Squidoo HQ in New York, she had to drive through Susan52's home state to get there, so the two decided to get together for lunch. After all, a girl on the road has to eat! And that's how the meeting at the Macaroni Grill in Little Rock came about. Did you ever wonder how someone you "know" online would be in person? True Grit: The Movies and the Fort Smith Connection

Did you now there's really a Fort Smith, Arkansas? It's true! You probably know about the 2010 remake of "True Grit." The 1969 version of the movie starred John Wayne in one of his biggest roles ever, the only one for which he won a Best Actor academy award. In 2010, producers and directors Joel and Ethan Coen (generally referred to as the Coen Brothers), released a new version of the movie. Both times, people in Fort Smith, Arkansas, stood up and paid attention. You see, the city of Fort Smith plays a major role in the story and its citizens weren't about to let the event go unnoticed. In fact, to celebrate the release of the 2010 movie, Fort Smith decided to throw a Gritapalooza! Many of the most prominent citizens of the city attended the Gritapalooza events in full Rooster Cogburn or Mattie Ross attire and a good time was had by all, as you'll see below. Ever since 1969 when the original "True Grit" movie was released, tourists have been coming to Fort Smith to see Judge Isaac Parker's courthouse and the famous gallows where Mattie Ross wanted murderer Tom Chaney hanged. They also come looking for more information about United States Marshal Rooster Cogburn, the movie's main character. So, what of all this is fact and how much is fiction? Meet Daisy, our Yellow Labrador Retriever

She was born on June 5, 2008. She's a puppy in this picture, but now she's a grown-up 3 1/2! She's Daisy, our yellow Labrador retriever. We got her when she was six-weeks old. I didn't want a puppy, didn't want to go through the chewing and the housebreaking, but it didn't quite work out that way. Our friends got a lab who happened to meet a boy lab and, as nature would have it, Daisy and her seven brothers and sisters were born. I had my eyes and ears open, looking for the perfect adult rescue dog, but these little yellow lab puppies needed homes, too, and the rest is history. History in the making, that is. This lens is about Daisy, making history at our house.

Summer Reading Fun: Great Books for Boys

Books are what dreams are made of. Does your boy love to read? Or do you dream of the day your son or grandson picks up a book on his own? If you're in the latter category, perhaps you're asking him to read the wrong books. Here's a quote from my favorite educator, Ruth Beechick: "With threat of punishment you can force children to read, or with promise of reward you can entice them to read, but neither is necessary if the books are right to begin with. That is, if books speak to children's hearts and emotions and stimulate their minds, and if they are not too hard to read, the best reward is the books themselves, and time to read them." As a mom of two now-grown sons who were (and still are) prolific readers, I've chosen some books that your boys might like to read. My list is not exhaustive and is not meant to be a required reading list. Instead, the books I recommend are books that, in general, boys like to read. I've limited my list to five different categories. Hopefully one or more will be categories that appeal to your child's interests. All of the books listed below have received excellent reviews from readers and parents of readers, demonstrating that they're "good books" from that point of view and loved by many. Have a reluctant reader, a child who only reads when he has to? This summer, when the kids are out of school, I hope you'll allow that child to choose a book or series of books from my list and encourage him to enjoy it on his own. If he loves it, he'll likely ask for more, so be prepared to get the next book in the series. If not, try another series, perhaps a series that is easier to read. Make library and bookstore visits regular activities during summer vacation. Your librarian can suggest other great book series for your child. Once he gets started on a series he loves, you might find him falling asleep with a book on a regular basis. Now, that would be a dream come true! P.S. NEWS: Jack LaLanne died on January 23, 2011, at the age of 96. He died of respiratory failure due to pneumonia. Jack LaLanne turned 96 on September 26, 2010. I'm old enough to remember him leading workouts, watching him on a small black and white television set with the ubiquitous jumpsuit and ballet slippers. I remember his shape, the very wide shoulders and very narrow hips. I was too young to fall in love, but I was not too young to be impressed. Jack LaLanne invented fitness, or at least brought it to the masses, and he's been talking about it, writing about it, and practicing good fitness and health habits for nearly 80 years now. Do you remember Jack as I do? If you've ever heard of him you probably do. Although the TV has been in color for decades now, Jack still shows up on the screen from time to time and has hardly changed a bit.

Hello Squidoo Friends, On July 28, 2011, Susan Deppner, better known as Susan52 on Squidoo, lost her home to fire. Her family and pets are fine and they also managed to save their vehicle. However, everything else was lost. She has no phone and she and her husband have no IDs. They are staying with friends for the time being. When something like this happens, even if you have insurance, there are many incidental expenses that insurance doesn't cover. Can you imagine having to replace your home and everything in it? I had a bit of a revelation today, one of those "duh" moments that make me feel really smart yet really dumb at the same time. I realized that I could take one of my blog posts, one I'm really proud of, and turn it into a Squidoo lens. Now, isn't that just the most obvious concept you've ever heard of? Yeah, me too. I learned it from Seth Godin of all people. You know, the inventor of Squidoo, the Head Squid himself. It's a concept that's amazingly simple though, I'm guessing, often overlooked. When my boys turned 7 and 4, a dear friend gave them each one of the best gifts they’ve ever received. They were capes, homemade capes made from a silky king-sized bed sheet she had picked up at a yard sale. Perfect props to help them use their imagination. The capes were copper-colored and trimmed with colorful binding, making them rather exotic-looking – and perfect to use to play dress-up. Over the years, the capes were used to turn my boys into Batman and Robin, two of the three wise men, and many more characters, most ones that they invented, characters too numerous to count. My little Batman and Robin are all grown up now. The little characters they were have turned into wise young men and I truly believe that the opportunities they had to use their imaginations contributed to the wisdom that they exhibit today. Creative make-believe play became an important vehicle for them to learn about life and, indeed, to learn how to be men. I answer to many names. I'm Susan, of course, as well as Honey, daughter, granddaughter, sister, aunt and, especially, "Mom!" If you know me online, likely you know me as Susan52 or perhaps my52cents. All of those names have special and significant meaning to me, but the name that is the most important, the one I take most seriously, is the name Christian. Although I don't talk about my faith much, that does not mean that I am in any way ashamed of my Christianity. Indeed, I am humbled to be a child of the King. Simply, I prefer to practice my faith quietly and, instead, demonstrate the qualities of Christianity by my actions rather than by bold declarations. Not that there's anything wrong with bold declarations of one's faith; that's just not my style. In fact, I feel that by proclaiming my faith here I may be setting myself up for scrutiny that might get in the way of my quiet witness, but that is a chance that I've decided to take. Jesus said, "Seek and ye shall find." I believe that at this time in our history more people than ever are seeking truth; indeed, the truth that will set them free. If you're seeking, perhaps you found this page for a reason and perhaps my quiet witness, presented on this page, will help you find the Truth that passeth all understanding so that you, too, may answer to the name Christian.

Call me old-fashioned, call me sentimental, call me eclectic for sure, but these are the top five movies that I think of when asked to name my favorites. To be honest, I'm not much of a movie goer. What a great tribute to Red Hatters, those wonderful women of "a certain age" whose purpose it is to rekindle the ability to laugh at themselves and with each other. The purple and red attire worn by Red Hatters is based on the poem, Warning by Jenny Joseph. Most of the hats in this book were created to wear for special occasions and social functions by members of Red Hat Society chapters around the country and around the world. There are few things more frustrating than jumping up from the dinner table to rush to answer a phone call that turns out to be from a telephone solicitor. Now, with a talking caller ID, you'll be able to hear who's on the line and then make the decision to answer or not to answer. With a talking caller ID, you can record an announcement for all of your regular callers. Then when Grandma calls, you and the kids will know to hurry and pick up the phone when you hear, "Grandma's calling!" Or if the boss calls, you can either answer or put him off while you finish dessert. If an unknown caller or "number blocked" call is identified, the machine will let you know that, too, and you can feel free to ignore the call, which these days at our house is probably a recorded call from a politician asking for my vote. If you have caller ID service on your phone and you'd like to take it to the next level, please read on for details of a stand-alone talking caller ID unit that we like, as well as some alternative choices, including phone systems that include talking caller IDs. The 2008 presidential election is history here in the United States of America and Barack Obama won fair and square. A few weeks prior to the election, which was on November 4, 2008, I posed this challenge to visitors to this lens: "Let's say I'm an undecided voter. Who should I vote for? This is your opportunity to convince me to vote for your candidate!" The lens received many responses, most emotion-charged and heartfelt. The lens received a nice number of visits, many from true undecided voters. It's nice to believe that a forum such as this one played a part in people making up their minds on such an important decision. The comments remain below, at least for now, and it may be interesting to review them as time passes and as we watch to see what happens during President Obama's time in office. People's opinions as they stated them here may or may not change; only time will tell. In the meantime, thank you to all who contributed, and may God continue to bless America.

Do you stop at STOP signs? I mean do you really stop? It seems there are a whole lot of people on the road these days who don't seem to know the meaning of the word STOP. Recently I was waiting in my car in a parking lot by the back entrance of our town's Wal-Mart store. From where I was sitting I could see the road leading out of the parking lot onto the street behind the store. The entire time I was there I watched that intersection and I didn't see even one car actually stop at the STOP sign before they turned out onto the street. Not one! In fact, several people didn't even slow down but just kept right on going. I'll concede that there was little to no traffic on that back street at the time, but I've had many opportunities to observe drivers at that particular intersection and barely slowing down at the STOP sign is the norm rather than the exception. Besides, "Stop unless there's nobody coming" isn't the way the law is written. Maybe it's because I'm the parent of a cop that I notice these things, or maybe it's because I'm a law-abiding citizen who actually does stop at STOP signs, but the drivers' collective behavior today just really rubbed me the wrong way. What part of "STOP" don't you people understand? Read on. (Don't stop now!)

Watching news coverage of President Obama's trip to Egypt recently (June 3rd), I noticed what appeared to be a shadow on the presidential upper lip. Did the president not bother to shave? Did he forget to pack his razor? Or, could he actually be growing a mustache? I think he is growing a mustache. At this point it appears thin and straight, but just imagine the possibilities! For that matter, imagine the reasons. Actually, I'm not sure I want to imagine. Perhaps there will be an official press release about the issue soon. In the meantime, I'm curious what other people think about this phenomenon, the presidential mustache. What do you think? Like the idea? Think it's inappropriate? sexy? In May 2009, President Barack Obama selected federal appeals judge Sonia Sotomayor as his nominee to become the next justice of the United States Supreme Court. On April 30, 2009, justice David Souter announced that he intended to retire from the court at the end of this year's term (the term runs from early October to late June or early July). This was President Obama's first opportunity to affect his influence on the court with the appointment of a justice likely to be hold a view of law similar to his own. As expected, Obama's choice was a woman since only one female justice currently sits on the court. Through the summer of 2009, hearings were held in the United States Senate as debate raged about Sonia Sotomayor's qualifications, although her ratification seemed sure. Indeed, she was approved and was sworn in August 8, 2009. What is Justice Sonia Sotomayor's background? What process does a Supreme Court nominee have to go through to become confirmed as a justice? Enjoy Ricky Young's vocals along with host and bass player Steve "Bubba" Carter, Richard Carter on alto sax, Tommy Cunningham on lead guitar, Mike Lenzini's smooth vocals, trombone, and flute, Ronnie Thomas vocals and keyboard, Steve Clark vocals, sax, and trombone, Larry Matthews with vocals and on drums, Harley Vinsant vocals and bass, and Josh Hice on trumpet. The Cabbageheads are a busy band, performing up to 100 times a year in the Fort Smith and surrounding area as well as adjoining states. They're a favorite at local fundraisers, civic and corporate events, and even weddings if you're lucky enough to book them far enough in advance. Locals count on Mr. Cabbagehead and the Screaming Radishes for entertainment at the Mayor's 4th of July celebration in Fort Smith every year. This year, our favorite band will be in our favorite small town, Greenwood, Arkansas, too! Now in their 26th year, the band is certified by the Arkansas Arts on Tour Commission and the Mid America Arts Alliance [MAAA] and in 2007, Mr. Cabbagehead and the Screaming Radishes were inducted into the Old Town Hall of Fame in Fort Smith.

April 2010. Happy anniversary to me! It's been three years now since I got started on Squidoo. Wow, what an outstanding ride it has been! One of my most cherished possessions is my collection of family favorite recipes. These are the recipes that I use on a daily basis, tried and true recipes that my family loves. My collection isn't huge, but it's big enough to take up a shelf in my pantry, which is where I keep all of my family favorite recipes so that I can find them easily. Now, if you opened my pantry and tried to find a specific recipe, you might have to search for awhile. Of course I know where they all are, so that means nobody had better fool with the cookbooks, notebooks, and recipe files on that shelf or come supper time they might be waiting while I figure out where you moved the one I was looking for! The cookbooks and notebook in the picture are the ones that contain most of our family favorite recipes, and many of the pages are marked with newspaper clippings of recipes or envelopes with recipes written on them. Some of those are a bit food spattered, obviously well used and well loved. And no, my collection of family favorite recipes is not for sale at any price! Most large cities and many small towns celebrate July 4th with a huge fireworks display. Large displays are fabulous, but expensive. Happily, with grants and the support of local businesses, many towns, both big and small, are able to put on fireworks displays for their local communities. Of course many people create displays in their own back yards thanks to local fireworks stands. The fireworks displays in the area where I live are always good and attending their favorite local event is a tradition for many families. Many people who can't get out or choose not to fight the crowds watch some of the largest displays on TV. The Boston Pops celebration on the banks of the Charles River is usually televised, as is the Washington, D.C. fireworks display on the mall, accompanied by the National Symphony Orchestra. It's an annual tradition for our small-town family to cap off our Independence Day celebration by driving to the nearby "big city" to attend the fireworks display there. While this event usually falls on July 4th, weather conditions sometimes cause delays, as I'll explain below. What do you get when you take a handful of Giant Squids, add a community blogging platform, and sprinkle liberally with a dose of holiday fun? The answer? Lots of great holiday blogs, more than a few gift review lenses, and a fair amount of internet marketing success. So far. Let me explain. About a year ago, a small group of Giant Squids decided to create a gifts blog. Our goal was that each would contribute a post on a regular basis to the blog, offering the best top-rated gift ideas that we could find, in essence doing our readers' pre-shopping research for them. The result was what we call the Top-Rated Gifts blog which, I am happy to report, now contains nearly 300 posts. TRG receives regular search engine traffic which sometimes actually results in sales. (We're keeping our stats private for now.) The blog was started at the end of September 2009 and performed decently over that year's holiday shopping season. This year we're looking forward to great results since the blog will have had a whole year to establish itself online. During summer 2010, the topic of what else we could do to generate holiday sales came up as we started thinking in the "Christmas in July" vein. We decided that a blog dedicated to Christmas might be a good idea. There is no doubt that people shop for Christmas-related items throughout the year, so we wanted to be able to provide ideas for Christmas every day of the year. Thus, the Christmas Every Day blog was born. We liked the idea so much that we decided that if someone wasn't thinking about Christmas every day, perhaps they were thinking about Halloween or Valentine's Day. And our "empire" began to grow. It's too early to tell exactly what's going to happen with our mini gifts-and-holiday-blogs project, but we are looking forward to great results. The Quest for 20 Worthy Lenses

OOnce upon a time, in a kingdom called Squidoo, there lived a Giant Squid named Susan52. Now, while Susan52 was a Giant of long-standing (anointed 'way back in the second Giant Squid class of the kingdom's history), she had no special powers (unless you count her extraordinary story-telling skills and mastery of hyperbole, but I digress). Then one recent day there came a contest to the kingdom. A contest to anoint the winner with a special power. Power that would last just a week. The power to award Purple Stars! Alas, Susan52 wasn't sure she wanted to enter this contest. She knew of the long hours that would be required to travel through the kingdom seeking out lenses deserving of the Purple Star. She wasn't even sure she was worthy of being trusted with the responsibility, even for a few days! But then, forsooth (forsooth?), Susan52 thought of all the fun and pleasure and enjoyment she would gain if, indeed, her name were to be the one pulled out of the royal hat and she won the contest. So, she created a lens. A lens that she felt worthy of entering into the contest. For indeed, before her name could qualify to be put into the hat she, herself, would have to earn a purple star. And, as fate would have it, her lens was deemed by Queen Robin to be Purple-worthy! And, thus, Susan52's name was put into the royal hat along with 54 others. And she was proud. Time passed (a day or two) and, what hence but did Susan52 receive a notice from Queen Robin. Susan52 broke open the royal seal of the message and, alas, the news proclaimed that she, indeed was the winner of the contest! The esteemed spouse of Queen Robin had drawn her name and now she, Susan52 herself, would be bestowed with the title Purple Star Queen of the Week, which comes with the power to award Purple Stars! And so it came about that Susan52 was tasked with finding 20 great lenses within the kingdom, lenses created by Giants and not-yet-Giants alike, lenses worthy of the coveted purple star! So, Susan52 began her quest. And, indeed, she found far more than 20 worthy lenses, but whittle the number down she did. And she was satisfied. Her Purple Star power is gone now, but Susan52 lives on, happily ever after, to present to you these 20 worthy lenses. She hopes that you will visit each of them because - whether you realize it or not - you too, humble lensmaster, have great power. You have the power to turn a frown upside down with a kind comment, a thumbs up and, perhaps, a tweet or even (gasp!) a Facebook share! So go ye now into the kingdom of Squidoo and use your power liberally but wisely. Team Cancer Warrior!

When I made my Cancer Warrior lens and announced my cancer diagnosis to the world, I had no idea how much support I would get from family, friends, and strangers from around the world! Prayer support poured in and I have no doubt that's what pulled me through the initial treatment and tough time. What I didn't mention was the cost of fighting our fight. Because we had no medical insurance, we've had to dig deep (and I mean really deep) into our life savings to manage the bills for doctor visits, CT scans, minor surgeries (with major costs), lab tests, chemotherapy and radiation, and the subsequent follow-up visits which will go on for at least five years. It's interesting what we've learned about being a "private pay" patient and I'll tell you a little bit more about that below. But in the meantime, I've decided to offer some items for sale through Zazzle, profits of which will be put toward the remaining bills. I've chosen this beautiful single daisy to represent the Cancer Warrior team. I wish I could give every one of my cheerleaders and supporters an entire bouquet of daisies, but that would be impossible. Wish I could give away t-shirts, but that isn't possible right now. Maybe someday I can do some of those things, but for now I can offer "Team Cancer Warrior" daisies on stickers, magnets, mouse pads, t-shirts, and more. These are items that would make great gifts for birthdays, Christmas, or any occasion, and the quality is excellent. I wouldn't offer these if I didn't believe in the products themselves. Zazzle does great work! This isn't charity, so I can't offer you a tax deduction. (Wish I could!) These are just pretty designs that I think people will enjoy and can benefit from. These days it seems there's a tax on everything and it seems politicians are looking for creative ways to put an additional tax on everything we eat, drink, drive, or own. More and more, people are looking for a fair tax plan - and more and more people are looking at The FairTax. Taxes are necessary to pay for government services, but very few people believe that our tax system is a fair tax system. Does government need to take so much? How much longer can this go on before there is simply nothing left? Why de-motivate people to work and earn more for their families when earning more simply means paying more income tax? If you're sick of being controlled by taxes or if you disagree witht the current method of a tax on everything and everything with a tax, then you need to learn about the FairTax. Its name reflects its purpose, a consumption tax that is based on what you spend, not what you earn. It's a tax that YOU control. In short, with the FairTax you would bring home one hundred percent of your paycheck, then you'd pay taxes only on what you spend. To put every citizen, no matter what their income, on equal footing, the government would provide each household with a "prebate" each month, an amount of money to cover the necessary purchases that a family must make each month (think groceries!). Beyond that, if you choose to buy more and spend more each month, then you'll pay a tax on any NEW goods that you purchase. If you choose to save your money, you won't pay a penny more in taxes on your income. If a wealthy person wants to buy a new boat, an expensive coat, or a diamond ring, that person will pay a consumption tax on those goods. Spend more, pay more in taxes. The FairTax system would also eliminate fraud and tax cheats. If a pimp or drug dealer makes money on his illegal activity then spends that money on any new item, he'll pay a tax. No more cheating the income tax system by not claiming and paying taxes on illegal income. People are talking about the FairTax and when people talk, they tweet! They've always said they had faces made for radio. Well, PBS must have taken them seriously because they've animated Tom and Ray Magliozzi, also known as The Tappet Brothers, and given them their own TV show! The Car Talk guys may not show their faces, but they do lend their voices to their animated counterparts in the upcoming summer series based on their weekly NPR radio show. Haven't heard of Car Talk? Wow, are you missing out! You don't even have to like cars or have a car problem to enjoy the radio show. At our house, the Car Talk hour is sacred and, even though it's my husband who's the car guy, I love listening to Tom and Ray, too. They're funny guys, but they really know their stuff, and they must be doing something right because their show is one of the most popular hours on National Public Radio each week.
