Squidoo : Lenses by XP

XP is a self-proclaimed Squid Princess and an official Giant Squid. She digs the outdoors, her amazing family, critters both wild and tame, digital photography and also making insane money. Argumentative, sure, but fairly open-minded and easy-going. She's a geek, mental, random, stubborn, giving and fabulous. She loves her career in graphic design and enjoys creating lenses and apparel too.

Lens typography: Beyond bold and italic text

We all know bold. We all know italic.
Most of us can probably even use both at once. *

But how can we use other font effects within the body of our favorite modules (Text/Write and others) to emphasize and enhance our message?

Read on to discover the best how-to lenses, with tips that will help you design more appealing copy.

* If you don't have these two mastered yet, this probably isn't the lens for you. Sorry. Please return to the early '90s and assume the tornado drill position.

Why don't abused women just LEAVE?!

It is a common question, and a good one to consider:

If a woman (or a man) is being abused by a loved one, why do they not just head for the door?

Take a look at the cycle of abuse to understand why many women become entwined in the cycle and often can't see the seemingly obvious answer to ending abuse.

XP's wicked cool Lensography

XP is short for xpButtercup which in turn is short for ex-Princess Buttercup, derived from The Princess Bride movie. (For this reason, I'll often refer to my husband as the Dread Pirate Westley.)

More people call out "XP!" when they see me, than my given name. This is due to the fact that I have met most of my IRL friends through my excessive Internet usage over the past 15 years.

(And yes, I do have pink and green streaks in my hair.)

This lens will be my biography, resume, and possibly also therapy.

Although professionals may disagree on the titles and exactly what each phase looks like, the Cycle of Abuse remains largely the same ...

the main components being calm, tension, explosion and reconciliation ...

with a pattern that often starts out with longer periods of calm, and escalates toward longer periods of tension.

When the cycle is spinning out of control, the explosion may be a fatal one.

Chicken berries?

I'm afraid I can't take credit for that one. My former boss called the colorful eggs that one day, and it stuck.

Another co-worker nurtured the idea that "squeezing" the chickens might help us produce more berries.

That's not exactly what gets produced when you squeeze a chicken. Just ask my son.

I'm a proofreader.

I didn't get any special training ... I just did well in Language Arts throughout elementary and high school, and seem to have an eye for finding mistakes.

I honestly don't go looking for other people's flaws ... they just jump out at me sometimes.

(I mean in no way to insinuate that I am perfect -- far from it -- but I make an energetic effort to check my spelling, punctuation and grammar, sometimes to an annoying extent. Ask my husband.)

I became involved in cancer fundraising in 2002 when my sister invited me to Relay For Life in our hometown.

Since that day, I have been a team member, a team captain, a committee member, and a sponsor. My whole family raises money year-round for Relay. Why are we so dedicated?

I lost all four grandparents to cancer. I lost my aunt, my mother's youngest sister. I lost my own sister, my mother's oldest daughter. I have family members still in the fight.

I take part in Relay hoping that my efforts, together with the people that our family inspires to participate, will mean that my kids will never have to take up the fight.

WHY?

We will never; can never know.

Sometimes there are warning signs ... other times, none.

There may have been a note, or words exchanged, but these "reasons" are never the complete answer for what was done.

You are not alone in your struggle to find meaning in what may seem a meaningless act.

You may find yourself feeling the need to defend one's memory against the negative societal views of suicide.

You may be just as angry as you are sad, at times.

You may even be confronted by someone whose belief system guides them to assure you that your loved one is going to Hell.

But what you will find here, is simply support, and understanding.

Sound like a scam? Well known and respected sites like PayPal, eTrade and ING Direct pay for referrals. It's nothing new.

Still concerned? I added links to the bottom of this page to other sites talking about it. Google for yourself ... but please, be kind and let me refer you if you heard about the offer from me!

My promise: If I get 50 referrals by May 15, I will donate $200 to American Cancer Society. As of this update, I already have 14 referrals!

When Animal Control Attacks: JCAC vs. Turn 3 Ranch

The owner and the manager of Turn 3 Ranch in Jackson County, Michigan are charged with three counts of torture.

Their herd of 69 horses was seized back in March 2007. An ignorant judge ordered them forfeited when the owners could not come up with $134,000 in a week. All horses were sold or given way.

In a just system, they would be considered innocent until proven guilty ... but Web sites across the country have labeled them animal abusers.

UPDATE: April 30, 2008 -- Felony animal torture charges against James Henderson (owner) and Matt Mercier (manager) were DISMISSED in court today. The judge cited lack of evidence.

Over a year later, with their horses gone -- some confirmed dead, others suspected to have been shipped to slaughter -- the court finds that the charges were unsubstantiated. But what happens now?

The first song that ever stuck in my head as a very young child was "I Can Help."

Growing up in the 70's I recall country, disco and a bit of early hard rock.

Moving into the 80's I can remember when Madonna and Prince were hot new stars, and I was a teen in the hair band heyday.

By the mid-90's I was listening to country again, but never gave up on my dance grooves or heavy beats.

I've never been a big "fan" of any particular artist or group. A song either moves me, or it doesn't.

Please enjoy this trip back through my musical memory lane.

(This will eventually be a "life discography" and I'm still adding content. Feel free to suggest other titles I might like by adding them to the Guest Plexo at the bottom. Thanks!)

SquidTunes: The Story Behind the Song

SquidTunes is a concept I've been knocking about for several months.

In a nutshell: the original concept that predates SquidTunes had a working title of Story Behind the Song and was envisioned to be a combination of Urban Dictionary (where a user could submit a song meaning, and visitors could comment and rank it) and Epinions (similar concept, but more product and review oriented).

User picks a song and suggests a meaning for the lyrics. Guests may agree with page author or disagree, and leave comments. Visitors would also be able to quickly and easily preview other songs from the artist, buy concert tickets or memorabilia, view photos and Wiki on the artist/group, etc.

I happen to think that SquidTunes could be the next wildly successful co-brand for Squidoo. I'm fairly young in Squid years, but I have the motivation to learn (and earn) and would like to be involved in SquidTunes as Community Leader or something to that effect.

Animals do not have the same rights as humans. With rights come responsibilities. A creature cannot be responsible without the higher thinking required for ethics and empathy. Disney is not reality. A mother deer will fight her own fawn over a scrap of food in the winter; they are wired for survival. Many animals eat their own young. Instincts over compassion. The animal rights agenda is a movement purely based on self-loathing and greed.

In certain circumstances, I believe capital punishment should be an option. Specifically, crimes that were witnessed and confessed to, if the person is found guilty beyond the shadow of a doubt, and the crime is violent and fatal, such as rape and murder. Confessed pedophiles should have the option to choose the death penalty for themselves -- how many have to admit they KNOW they will offend again when released, before we stop releasing them?

A pastor, in church!

"Married couples must have sex for 30 days. Single members have to abstain from sex for 30 days."

Now that's getting people talking!

Relevant Church is a hot topic today in the news for this controversial challenge. This Tampa church has a blog, a Myspace, Facebook and is on YouTube as well.

I stumbled upon a web site where you can register free, reply to other users, and arrange trades.

Trade WHAT, you may ask?

Well, they gladly trade $10, $20 or more in cash (sent to your PayPal account) if you click on a coded referral link and complete an "offer."

These offers are nothing fancy. They range from free trials and one-time purchases, to $50 products or club memberships. Things you might buy online anyway, really.

You choose your offer, complete it, and get paid.

The trade is reported and each person leaves feedback for the other trader, much like after an eBay transaction.

Sound interesting?

As a family, we have learned the ASL fingerspelling alphabet and a few basic hand signs as a way to communicate quietly and send each other nonverbal cues or jokes.

As far as learning a second language goes as a hobby or personal enrichment, ASL is fun and fairly easy to learn compared to French, Spanish or Japanese. We enjoy learning and using new signs.

All of these letters are signed with the right hand.

The most recent studies I am aware of showed that among Americans:

* approximately 10% are pro-hunting

* slightly less than 10% are anti-hunting

That leaves 80% of Americans without a strong opinion on the matter, but that demographic is not very likely to search for and find this lens. Sorry, I don't have global stats.

Chances are you are here as one of the roughly 20% of Americans (or someone from another country with an opinion of the topic) who has an interest in this issue.

Which makes you exactly the kind of person I'm hoping to hear from.
