On October 12th I got a new knee - I'm proudly and loudly calling it my bionic knee! Using the Visionaire Patient Matched Instrumentation (layman's term - customized alignment tools) my orthopedic surgeon, from OHSU Hospital in Oregon, worked with his skilled hands and a brilliant surgical team to replace my bum knee with a brand spanking new, high tech knee. Seriously these are the best homemade bread and butter pickles you will ever pick out of a jar and put on a sandwich or gobble down by the spoonful! My garden each year is planted with these bread and butter pickles in mind. I had grand ideas of tomatoes, different kinds of squash, plus more, then I read an article...oh lordy please don't make me remember, although I think it was Sunset, Mother Earth News or some similar magazine article that spoke of planting what you really want to harvest and will actually use. My bread and butter pickles came to the forefront and confirmed my decision to plant cucumbers, sweet onions, green peppers, and garlic. I rely on finding the rest of the ingredients for my bread and butter pickles at my local farmer's market or green grocer. Psst! My jars are usually garage sale finds...even the dusty, been in boxes for years can be scrubbed clean with a bit of soaking and elbow grease. Note: Run your finger around the rim to make sure there are no defects...otherwise your jars will not seal properly with water bath or pressure cooker processing. The first time I tried Alaskan King Crab Legs the flavorful seafood experience was quite incredible. When crab is cooked correctly it is delicate, sweet and never chewy. Top Ten Bento Gadgets and Tools

Ever since reading more over at The Kawaii Bento Club - the ideas created over there are spectacular - I've thought about making bento here at home too. As I browsed different pages about bento that included recipes, videos and tons of ideas it became clear to me that I'd need at least a few other gadgets and tools to pull this off. This is my top ten list of things that I would love to have and thought they'd be practical for your kitchen too. While I probably won't be making any of the "cute" food, our boys are grown so I'm not making school lunches anymore, the premise of bento is what intrigues me the most. It's a healthy way to eat and in the right portions eating this way can definitely help with weight control. I really like the larger Mr. Bento stainless steel container for my husband. It would keep his food hot while he is working out on the rails and would provide enough to keep him fueled until he made it home for dinner. The smaller bento box is perfect for me. The portioned containers would also give me the visual of a proper sized meal and if I ate small portions from the box throughout the day it would be enough to keep the edge off, help with that bad snack attack that hits when I 'forget to eat'. Making Caramel Apples is something we especially enjoy during the Fall harvest...caramel apples are a delish Halloween treat too. Oh, gee whiz some of the messes we've created! That never stops us from gobbling up the caramel apples one by one until they are all gone! Certainly a great reason to get to making more! As with most projects making caramel apples has always been a family thing. We love gathering in the kitchen, spending our time together creating these ooh so yummy, sticky, gooey treats. My family was always into music! From as early as I can remember we performed in our living room, in neighborhood gatherings, and on occasion we acted out our talents in Navy Family Talent Shows...our performance of My Favorite Things got a standing ovation. From day one, due in part to a very special instructor Pat, I knew I'd made the right decision. It felt so right, I excelled, and found myself helping other's in the class that were struggling with all kinds of life issues. In hindsight, I truly believe that my eagerness and maturity played a huge part in my success. Our goats are Nubian, or as we call 'em here at home bunny goats because of their big floppy ears. If you are thinking about owning any breed of goat, I highly recommend that you be prepared for the ups and downs of ownership. Because goats are ruminants (they have four stomachs and digest their food in a unique way) it is of particular importance to understand as much as you can about a goat's diet. My Grandma Katie's Cardamom Bread

As a tradition for many a Christmas my Grandma Katie would make us a homemade-with-love loaf of Cardamom bread. It was hot out of the oven to our door on Christmas morning. These are the Best Pots and Pans to replace all of your non-stick cookware because instead of non-stick materials (which have been found to be unhealthy) this set uses a 'Stainless Steel' technology. We have overlooked how easy stainless steel is to clean and how long lasting it is. Also, it has a way of distributing heat much better than counterparts. In other words... you can cook at lower temperature (the heat is well distributed) and lower heat means better cooking with less sticking. A very small amount ( a few drops) of water or olive (or cooking spray) will keep the surface coated so you will not have food sticking on to the pan. Also the clean up is always easy. If something sticks (from overheating or problematic foods such as cheese and eggs) then you can easily wash the pan (see washing videos on this page). I never go wrong making and baking cookies from my Aunt Jean's recipe files. Forever she will be known as the cookie queen to me...that is a great memory, don't you think? At the Scholastic Book Sale in our little grade school I happened upon this book. As I read it, standing right there in the middle of the aisle, tears welled up in my eyes. Love You Forever is one powerful little book about the special bond between mother and son. On this day I purchased our first copy, plus a few other's that I gave to family and friend's. On a side note: I have to admit the part in the book where the mom climbs the ladder to her adult son's room was a little weird. Both of my boy's would think I'd really gone off the deep end if I attempted this. :-)

Food, Inc - Take Control Over Your Food

A girls night out for a movie - Food, Inc and dinner changed my outlook on food forever! In fact when I got home that night sleep did not come easy. Instead of counting sheep I was mentally going through my kitchen pantry - not a horrible assessment, although I knew there were going to be a few things on the chopping block when I got up in the morning! And my husband did not even miss em'! :) The three most significant things that I took away from watching Food, Inc. are: ~ Cases of Diabetes II in children is escalating and over the next ten years or more one in three children will have the disease. Type II Diabetes is not a childhood disease, it's been an adult disease. Pretty scary, huh? ~ Cows are NOT supposed to eat corn...they are supposed to eat grass. Have you seen the labels in the store that proudly say: Corn Fed Beef? Well, they have sold us on the idea that's how it is supposed to be! ~ The horrible conditions that "our meat" live in is disgusting! The slaughtering practices are even worse. Not only are the animals abused, so are the worker's. Please watch Food, Inc and give me your take on the movie. If you have already seen the movie I'd love to hear your feedback! Toss me an egg baby, I'm hankerin' for a poach! From as early as I can remember my mom and grandma's served poached eggs as regular morning fare. Always gently laid atop a buttery English muffin half, the other buttery half laden with orange marmalade. As my palate has progressed I've tried poached eggs many different ways, even making up my good...and not so good concoctions. Today I am sharing recipes I have discovered online for pumpkin fondue so that you and I can try this at home. It's not an experiment either, because baking fondue in pumpkins has been done and with great success I might add. Ya know I've never considered myself a geek, I mean how the heck would I know the circumference of a parallelogram nor do I own anything even faintly 'Star Warrish', so just by title alone, Cooking for Geeks did not necessarily call to my inner foodie. Surprise, surprise...after browsing through the various chapters, trying a couple of recipes and in general, appreciating the writing throughout, I'm now proud to say, "I am a geek!" Buba Recommeded - Kyjen Puzzle Toys for Dogs

Oh woe is me...I'd sure like to zap our now big dog Buba back to a tiny puppy because he so loved cuddlin' in my lap, always insisted upon delivering his kisses all over my face. It's not to be...darn it! There sure is something especially unique about a puppy though...don't ya agree? His antics as a puppy have stayed though. We knew within a few days of having him join our family that he was quite unique and really quizzical.. We'd roll a ball back and forth, he'd watch, it wasn't until it curved off the path to roll under the couch or another piece of furniture that he'd lurch forward to start to play. He wanted to find the "lost toy". Our best ever purchase was the Kyjen Hide-A-Squirrel Puzzle Toy. Oh my, did Buba go nuts...lol, no pun intended :) Even after hundreds of hours of play that darn toy kept it's shape. There were a few tattered edges, a squirrel or two did not squeak anymore...all in all his fave puzzle toy far outlasted the price we paid. My discovery of more Kyjen Puzzle Toys for Dogs had me smilin', remembering when Buba would be romping around the house having fun with his dog toy. The squirrel puzzle fit his personality perfectly, hope you discover one for your doggie too!
