Selective Mutism

Selective Mutism has a debilitating affect on all involved. The purpose of this page is to raise awareness around the area of Selective Mutism, especially to those who will come across children in the school environment who display some form of selective mutism.

I work within educational psychology and have over ten years experience of developing programmes to support children with their emotional wellbeing.

I hope my case study and thoughts will give you some practical ideas and boost your confidence in your approach. I've also included some information on what Selective Mutism is, and some interesting video clips which I hope will give you a better insight into this fascinating area.

My work with one child has prompted me to create this lens. He's one I'll never forget.

I hope to answer all of these questions and many more in this lens.

Social Stories

A Social Story is a very prescriptive way of identifying and addressing a problem behaviour and giving direction on how we'd like to change it.

Social Stories are usually written for children (or adults) on the Autistic Spectrum but are also beneficial for anyone with social communication difficulties.

Through this lens, I'm hoping that you'll gain understanding of why we use social stories, when to use a social story and how to write a social story.

I hope teachers, parents and educators, will find this lens a useful addition to their resource banks and will begin to develop their own Social Stories.

I work within Educational Psychology in the U.K., and work with children who have some form of Emotional and/or Behavioural difficulty. Some of the children need help with friendship or social skills, others have self esteem issues and my favourite area is anger management. I also help children to recognise and appropriately express their feelings and emotions and to be able to identify feelings in others. This is just the tip of the iceberg :)

I want to put together a collection of lenses giving ideas for supporting children experiencing some form of emotional difficulty.

I hope you find them useful.

Top 10 Disney Characters

Mickey Mouse? Winnie The Pooh? Maybe Cinderella? This is my personal Top 10 list of Disney Characters.

You'll notice that they're older characters. I grew up with most of these characters and then introduced my children to the rest of them.

A large number of Disney's characters are taken from old European stories and fairy tales written by such authors as The Brothers Grimm and Hans Christian Anderson.

I hope you'll enjoy looking through my list and maybe add your top Disney Characters to the list near the bottom of the lens.

Fish and chips... a must on any British menu. My first home was above a Fish and Chip shop. My Grandparents owned a small chain of 'chippies' from the 50's - 70's and I have happy memories of those days.

Through this lens, I'd like to share with you the alure of Fish and Chips and why they're still one of my favourite meals.

How did the Fish and chip industry begin?

What can you order there?

As someone travelling from distant shores to the U.K., what can you expect from our great national dish?

I hope to answer all of these questions and many more in this lens.

Fish and chips really are a national treasure!

Resources To Raise Self Esteem In Children

Using resources to raise self esteem in an educational setting can be a minefield. Where do you start? In this page you find a variety of some of the resources that I have used successfully and am happy to recommend.

I work within educational psychology and have over ten years experience of developing programmes to support children with their emotional wellbeing.

Self esteem is a vast area and the resources listed here will cover a whole range from self awareness, self achievement, security etc as well as being fun not only for the children but for you too!

I've suggested games, stories and other resources to use with children age 4 - 7, 7 - 11 and 11 . However, use the ages on boxes as a guideline only. Don't be afraid of using something aimed at 6 year olds, with a 10 year old if that child (or group of children) are emotionally less mature than you would expect for that age range. I haven't been able to find any links to Strength cards but I use these too in my work.

Emotional wellbeing resources are at times expensive so choosing the right resources is vital when spending your budget. I hope to save you some money! Don't be afraid to look in local charity shops, car boot sales, ebay, wherever and use games, books etc that may not be an educational resource but are just fun!

Resources To Use When Teaching Feelings And Emotions To Children

Using resources to teach feelings and emotions in an educational setting can be a minefield. What should you use? How do you know which ones to use? You will find a variety of activities and resources on this page. They are games, books and ideas for home made activities that I have used successfully in my work and I am happy to recommend.

I work within educational psychology and have over ten years experience of developing programmes to support children with their emotional wellbeing.

Feelings and emotions are the stepping stones to understanding the world around us. I would recommend starting off by assuming the child needs help learning about their feelings and emotions from very basic feelings. The hierarchy of these may be happy, sad, angry, scared, lonely, proud. More complex feelings to move onto include feelings such as guilt, surprise, intrigue.

I've suggested resources to use with children by target age . However, use the ages on boxes as a guideline only. Don't be afraid of using something aimed at 6 year olds, with a 10 year old if that child (or group of children) are emotionally less mature than you would expect for that age range.

Therapeutic resources to help teach feelings and emotions can at times be expensive so choosing the right resource is vital when spending your budget, if you're lucky enough to have one. I hope my suggestions save you some money! Resources don't have to come from educational catalogues or have a therapeutic endorsement. There are plenty of games and activities that you can use that don't cost more than a few pennies.

Have a look in the back of teacher's cupboards, staff rooms etc for long forgotten puppets or games. Local charity/thrift shops, car boot/garage sales, ebay, wherever and use games, books etc that may not be an educational resource but are just fun!

So we've all got something we hate about our appearance... apparently. For me, it's my hair.

Why oh why have I got this stuff growing out of my head? The majority of people have hair that swings and sways gently and oh, let's not forget, it grows DOWNWARDS. Mine? Well mine goes any which way it wants EXCEPT down!

Some people pay a fortune to have curly hair like mine. At least they have a choice!

Downton Abbey Books And Gifts

Downton Abbey is a TV period costume drama set in rural England. It is quickly becoming an iconic tv series with many, many followers. Of course, books, DVD's, calendars etc are now being produced to quench a building thirst for fans. These items make perfect gifts for anyone with an interest in the series and with Christmas coming they'll certainly be amongst the top sellers this year.

The stately home used for filming is Highclere House which is in the beautiful Berkshire countryside. In the series, it becomes the home to the Earl and Countess of Grantham.

The programme depicts the loves and lives of the aristocratic Crawley family and the servants that work for them. Scenes show how life was for the gentry of the time and the servants too. The current series features scenes from the First World War and is based in years 1916-1918.

The second series of Downton Abbey has just been aired on UK tv screens and attracted an audience of some 9.7 million viewers. The show has also just won six emmy awards!

Bacon And Mushroom Spaghetti Sauce

My recipe for Bacon and Mushroom Spaghetti Sauce was taught to me by a friend who was a chef in an Italian restaurant.

I use smoked back bacon, which has less fat than the bacon I've seen in America, but you can use whatever you prefer.

I also remove all the visible fat. This is for two main reasons. One is to keep the meal healthy and the second reason is that I hate eating fat!

For a Vegetarian option, just leave the bacon and any meat stock cubes out!

You can serve this with which ever type of pasta you prefer. It's also good on top of a jacket potato.

So for a tasty inexpensive meal, try this Bacon and Mushroom Spaghetti Sauce!

A Weekend City Break In New York

Do you fancy a City Break in New York? Have you wanted to go to New York but need to know about what to do when you are there? Apart from the major tourist attractions in Manhattan like the Statue Of Liberty, The Empire State Building, Central Park and Broadway you don't know what else there is to see? Want to know how to get around in Manhattan? Are you just looking for ideas?

IF SO THEN THIS LENS IS FOR YOU!
This is the story of a long weekend in Manhattan and is co-written by Debnet and Poddys. It's not only an in-depth description of what to do in New York, how to get around and places to see, it's the story of OUR WEEKEND, a truly fun weekend with it's ups and downs but truly the best break we have both had.

So please join us on our long weekend in New York, a fun trip to Manhattan. We both hope that you will share in our experiences and enjoy this adventure of a lifetime.

Both Debbie and I are really excited to be doing a lens together about our wonderful trip. Neither of us think that anyone has attempted to create a joint lens before, so we hope that this is a first from this respect. We also had such an amazing long weekend in New York that we wanted to share some of our experiences with others.

Debbie created much of the lens, while I have added my comments and thoughts after in many cases. You can identify the sections that Debbie wrote as they have a pale background, whereas the sections that I worked on have a blue background.

You might notice that we have both covered the same topic at times. While it's not intended to be repetitive, where we have done this we both wanted to add our own information to the lens.

Not only is this about our experiences, it's also about preparing for a trip to New York, booking Flights and Hotels, and about getting around while you are there.

Our trip was to Manhattan, so we have focused on this, although New York City does consist of a number of boroughs. Also, only having a few days to see as much as we could, we avoided the major museums, but have included links to other sights and attractions that we did not visit for completeness.

Finally, most of the photographs we used in this lens are our own, not stock photos borrowed from other sites. Neither of us are great photographers and we don't profess to be either, but we think that we did pretty good, and are really happy to share our personal moments with you.

Please note! All photographs remain the property of Debnet and Poddys and should not be downloaded or copied without prior permission

You may have personal experience of brain tumours yourself or maybe one of your family members is or has suffered. I hope I'll be able to share my thoughts and feelings with you so that a new understanding is gained by all.

I'll also have something to say about the type of tumour I had (notice the past term) and what I've learnt since my surgery.

Brooch bouquets are a modern twist on the traditional Bride's wedding bouquet. As a Mother of the Bride (albeit in waiting!) I was surprised when my daughter told me that she planned to have a Brooch Bouquet instead of a traditional bouquet. My first question was 'What on earth is a brooch bouquet?'. I didn't much like the sound of them at all so when we came home, I sat and researched exactly what a brooch bouquet is.

One day I'll have a picture of my daughter's brooch bouquet to share with you and I look forward to doing so!

A Dream Vacation

If you could invent a dream vacation or holiday all of your own, what would it be?

Will it be a single day like a National holiday or will it be a two week vacation?

Would it be a one off or an annual event?

Would your dream vacation be a celebration? Maybe your dream holiday would be a coming together?

Where would your dream holiday be? Who would be there? What would you eat? Would the weather be hot or cold?

Would your dream holiday be an excuse for a lazy day or a fast action fun filled day? Maybe it would be in recognition of a family or national tradition.

Here's some of my thoughts about a dream holiday.

I think you'll understand.
When I'll say that something
I want to hold your hand,
I want to hold your hand,
I want to hold your hand.

Oh please, say to me
You'll let me be your man
And please, say to me
You'll let me hold your hand.
Now let me hold your hand,
I want to hold your hand.

And when I touch you I feel happy inside.
It's such a feeling that my love
I can't hide, I can't hide, I can't hide.

Yeah, you've got that something,
I think you'll understand.
When I'll say that something
I want to hold your hand,
I want to hold your hand,
I want to hold your hand.

And when I touch you I feel happy inside.
It's such a feeling that my love
I can't hide, I can't hide, I can't hide.

Think of afternoon tea... what comes to mind? English ladies sat around a table sharing a pot of tea, maybe drinking from bone china cups and cocking their little fingers. That's what dreams are made of! Tea is a traditional drink served anytime of the day or night and is a must have for the vast majority of Brits... but not this one!

Traditionally, tea was brewed from loose leaves in a teapot and served in china cups and saucers. Nowadays it's more likely to be brewed directly in a mug using a teabag.

If you love the sound of Native American chants, I'm sure you'll love the way this has been combined with music. The sound of the Native American Flutes is almost hypnotic.

Enjoy! Make sure to watch the videos so that you can listen to the tracks & see some great images.

Cauliflower Cheese

This is a recipe for Cauliflower Cheese.

This is the first time I have attempted a dedicated recipe lens, so please bear with me, Ok?

I grew up with a Mother who told me what I liked and what I didn't like. So through my entire childhood I believed I didn't like cheese, mushrooms, curry, any foreign food actually and a whole variety of other things too.

So, thinking I didn't like them, I didn't even try them. Not until I married and my ex Mother-In-Law would hold a spoon of whatever to my mouth and say 'Taste it before you tell me you don't like it' so I did taste... and I did like.

Strange thing is, most of those foods are now my favourites! My Mother-In-Law taught me more about food and cooking than my own Mother did and this is one dish I can now do blindfolded and I always enjoy.

I also cook it whenever my Dad comes to dinner as he loves it but never gets it at home as my Mum refuses to make it.

I am not an organised cook. I grab things in order of needing them and then realise I probably haven't got half the ingredients so I improvise a lot.

I'll give you the precise quantities in the recipe but to be honest, I've now made this so many times I can gauge how much to put in the pan without the need to weigh or measure anything.

The recipe includes making a Roux sauce. Some people panic when they think of making sauces this way but trust me, it's simple.

The photographs aren't quite as sharp as I would've liked but trying to take pics and cook when you're alone is quite an art! Maybe I can gradually replace them if someone else joins me in the kitchen and can do the photographs for me.

I hope you enjoy making Cauliflower Cheese with me!

Marvin Gaye: What's Going On Lyrics

'What's Going On' was a hit for Marvin Gaye in 1971. It was written by Renaldo "Obie" Benson, Al Cleveland, and Marvin Gaye and the lyrics were representative of feeling at the time, especially around the effects of the Vietnam war.

It is the fastest selling Motown single to date, of it's time.

Marvin Gaye was formerly a member of The Four Tops and they sang lyrics about relationships. The lyrics in 'What's going on' were a real move away from this for Marvin Gaye.

'What's going on' also became an album title which featured songs with lyrics that reflected the feelings of a returning Vietnam War hero.

Grease: Summer Nights Lyrics

Summer lovin', had me a blast
Summer lovin', happened so fast
I met a girl crazy for me
I met a boy, cute as can be

Summer days driftin' away,
To uh-oh those summer nights
Tell me more, tell me more,
Did you get very far?
Tell me more, tell me more,
Like, does he have a car?

She swam by me, she got a cramp
He went by me, got my suit damp
I saved her life, she nearly drowned
He showed off, splashing around
Summer sun, something's begun,
But uh-oh those summer nights

Tell me more, tell me more,
Was it love at first sight?
Tell me more, tell me more,
Did she put up a fight?
Took her bowlin' in the Arcade
We went strollin', drank lemonade
We made out under the dock
we stayed up until ten o'clock

Summer fling don't mean a thing,
But uh-oh those summer nights
Tell me more, tell me more,
But you don't gotta brag
Tell me more, tell me more,
Cause he sounds like a drag

He got friendly, holdin' my hand
Well she got friendly, down in the sand
He was sweet, just turned eighteen
Well she was good, you know what I mean

Summer heat, boy and girl meet,
But uh-oh those summer nights
Tell me more, tell me more,
How much dough did he spend?
Tell me more, tell me more,
Could she get me a friend?

It turned colder, that's where it ends
So I told her we'd still be friends
Then we made our true love vow
Wonder what she's doin' now

Summer dreams ripped at the seams,
But oh, those summer nights

Southampton

Southampton is on the south coast of England in the county of Hampshire. You may know Southampton as the home to many great cruise ships including The Titanic, The QE2, The Queen Mary, The Oriana and many more besides.

Southampton is a City with a population of 217,000 according to wiki answers. Within our community we have a very diverse mix of cultures. From West Indians and Asians to more recently Eastern Europeans. Southampton is known as having the largest Polish community in the U.K.

We have a medieval quarter. Many of the original town walls are still standing, despite bombing in WW11. The photograph here is of the Bargate and this was the original point of entry to the old gated town.

Due to the mass destruction of the war, Southampton is a mish mash of building designs. The city centre is a mix of medieval, post war and more modern builds.

Southampton city centre is full of green areas. The city's parks are well maintained by the local council. We also have Southampton Common. An area of countryside in the heart of the city.

Southampton has it's very own mall called West Quay. Here you will find all the usual shops that you can find anywhere else in the Country.

But you will also find some unique, local shops too. Bedford Place, near the top of the High St is testiment to that. There's frequently a market in the centre of 'town' as it's called. 'town' is the main shopping area as we locals call it. Occasionally we have a visiting market from Germany, Italy or France.

There's a couple of Universities. We are home to Southampton Oceanography Centre where some amazing research takes place. Southampton's universities attract students from all over the world.

I have so much to tell about my home town, I will reguarly be adding more information to this lens for many months to come I'm sure!

Family Heirlooms

Alas, I don't have many family heirlooms. After researching my family tree, I found out why. Most of my ancestors were labourers, carpenters, servants and the occasional smuggler! Consequently not much of any value, either sentimental or monietary, has been passed down through the generations.

What I do have though is some wonderful family photographs, such as the one here. This is believed to be a family member who emigrated, or was sent, (depending on your point of view) to Canada as a teenager.

I also have a crocheted table cloth that my Grandmother made. There's a couple of beautiful baby shawls that were made by Great Aunts for my children, tucked away in the attic, waiting to be used by the next generation.

I thought it would be great to find out what family heirlooms you have, or maybe intend to leave for others.

You can let me know about your Family Heirlooms by adding to the guestbook.

The best Family Heirlooms will be given their own pride of place on THE FAMILY ALBUM as the list grows.

Maybe you have something rare and valuable. Maybe you have a recipe from your Great Grandma. Whatever it is, please share it so that we can all enjoy it together.

What's the nicest thing that's been passed onto you? What's the most bizarre item to have come your way? Whatever it is, this is the place to tell about it!

'Only Fools And Horses' Another Great Britcom

Only Fools & Horses, was originally written and created by John Sullivan. It is one of the BBC's funniest sitcoms ever. It is now iconic TV that is available on DVD and frequently replays on various Sky channels. A couple of spin off series have also emerged. These being 'The green, green grass' and more recently 'Rock and chips'.

The show is based in the London suburb of Peckham. Derek Trotter, known throughout the series as Delboy, together with his much younger brother Rodney, run 'Trotters Independant Traders'. Selling cheap and faulty goods for a profit, the pair can usually be found at the local markets, selling their wares from a tatty old suitcase..

If you're not familiar with the Trotter brothers, I hope you'll take the time to watch some of the video clips...but be warned, you'll end up laughing so much your sides will hurt!!

Zulu was directed by Cy Endfield, this 1964 film starring Michael Caine, has to be one of the greatest war movies ever to be made.

The storyline is based upon a real battle that took place in 1879 at Rorke's Drift, South Africa. The battle that ensued, was between the British army's 24th regiment of Foot and The Zulu warriors.

This is one of the war movies I remember from my childhood and for good reason. If you want a great war movie that is based upon a true story, then this is the film for you!

Be prepared to be on the edge of your seat!

The film was made by Diamond Films and distributed by Paramount Pictures. In the Untied States, it was distributed by Embassy Pictures.

The Worst Gifts I Ever Received

Is it just me? Does everyone get awful gifts from time to time?

I think my run of inappropriate, strange, bizarre, gifts started at quite a young age. My dear old Aunty Doll liked to give a 50p ($1) sellotaped to a small pot of Nivea...now don't get me wrong, I like Nivea, but at 10 years old you don't really know what to do with it. Then of course there was Aunty Pat... at 14 years old I got a colouring book with pictures of fairies...just what every self respecting 14 year old wants!!! Aunty Pat did have a reputation for funny presents. My cousins & I would compare gifts after each Christmas & birthday. Don't get me wrong, I appreciate that I was given a gift, especially as my elderly Aunts didn't have a lot of money, but I always felt slightly conned :)

Lots of strange things have been given to me over the years. I'm sure I'm not the only one to have a collection of ceramic ornaments...usually of some kind of animal with a smile on it's face. The charity shop just give me another knowing smile now when I take a bag in...they know what to expect. I have to admit, on one or two occasions I've even recycled gifts...does anyone else do that? Oh, I just thought, maybe I'm being given all the recycled gifts that others don't want!!!

Then there was the Christmas that my Mum had been making a big fuss about. My Mother rarely keeps the secret of what a gift is but she did somehow manage it on this occasion. Lots of comments on the run up to Christmas, such as 'wait til you see what you've got' 'it was very expensive you know, I hope you'll appreciate it' ...you can imagine how wound up with excitement I was by the time Christmas arrived. There sat a huge, heavy, box. What could it be? I ripped through the paper in record time to find...a set of saucepans. I had saucepans, 2 sets in fact. Now why did my Mother presume that I'd want another set in a minuscule kitchen where I had no room for the ones I had, let alone another set!!! But still, I should be grateful.

This was outdone the following year on my birthday. A tin of paint arrived. Not any old tin you understand. B & Q's finest for Kitchens & bathrooms, as she (yes, my Mum again) could see that the walls needed a touch up!!!

Another occasion springs to mind...the dreaded Secret Santa. At the time, I was working in a school & the Head teacher insisted we all sat around the staff room & each took our turn to open the anonymous gift & say why we thought it had been given to us. I carefully opened the wrapping, whilst 20 other pairs of eyes watched, & there in front of me was the most hideous ornament in the form of a pair of birds...but it gets better...it had a great big chip in it & dust on the top & had obviously seen better days!!! I must've really upset someone to have been given that little gem ;)

Did anyone else notice that these gifts are always wrapped beautifully? Why is that?

What's the worst gift you've been presented with? Was it a Birthday Gift? Christmas Present? Something for Valentines Day? A Wedding Present maybe? Feel free to add to the list below and let everyone know.

I hope to answer all of these questions & many more in this lens.

The Work Of Jim Cronin - Primate Conservationist

James "Jim" Michael Cronin MBE (15 November 1951-17 March 2007) was the founder in 1987 of Monkey World in Dorset, England, a sanctuary for abused and neglected primates.

He was widely acknowledged as an international expert in the rescue and rehabilitation of abused primates, and in the enforcement of international treaties aimed at protecting them from illegal trade and experimentation.

Monkey World in Dorset, UK, is a haven for rescued primates, primarily Chimpanzees. It is open to the public and is the result of dedicated hard work by Jim Cronin and his wife Alison.

*Please note, this is a charity lens. I have been unable to set this up with Squidoo, as yet, as Monkey World is not currently on their list of charities. Until I am able to create the charity link, I will donate all royalties and any commission from sales, to Monkey World myself

The Guns Of Navarone

The guns Of Navarone is a war movie I first saw at the make shift cinema in school. I was mesmerised by the leading man, Gregory Peck.

The film is actually based upon the book, The Guns Of Navarone by Alistair Maclean but the storyline changes in some places from the original novel.

The Guns Of Navarone tells the story of how an Allied Commando team in WW11 came to save a Greek island, and also stranded British troops, from the German army. This film is not only brilliantly directed but also wonderfully acted. It's full of adventure, action and of course, the odd sprinkling of romance.

It was first released in The United States in 1961 at a cost of some $6.000.000.

The main production company was Columbia Pictures Corporation.

Even In the summer, I feel the cold. it's not such a big deal because I can always head out into the sunshine to thaw a bit, soak up the warmth and vitamin D while reading a book. But inside, summer and winter, I've had to develop some adaptive techniques to keep from freezing to death.

Here are some ideas that might help you as well if you're the person always complaining about being cold. Develop your own toasty little world to stay warm no matter where you are in the house.

Nativity Play Planning For Schools

Nativity Play productions are a nightmare to plan or a dream. Which is it for you? Firstly, you'll need to decide on a traditional Nativity play, or maybe something different with a modern twist on an age old story.

So. You're a class teacher, music teacher, maybe a year leader and you've been given the unenviable task to plan this year's Christmas Nativity play production for the whole school. Lucky you!

I have worked in schools and helped plan many Nativity play productions so I know the pitfalls!

There are so many things to consider when planning for the event of the school calendar year. As a previous member of school staff, I've seen things go superbly well and disastrously wrong. Hopefully you'll pick up some useful tips and ideas here and things will go amazingly well for you! Good Luck!

Netley, aka Netley Abbey, is a place I like to visit.

Netley is in the County of Hampshire, in England

It's a small village to the east of Southampton. It lies along the coast facing the river Itchen. It has seen many great ships go past it's shores. These include Titanic, The Queen Mary, The QE2 to name a few.

Alongside the grand cruise ships you will see the Isle Of Wight ferry, cargo ships, yachts, tugs, and the occasional speed boat go on their journeys along the Itchen to and from the waters of the Solent.

Netley is a sleepy little place with a wealth of history. Ancient ruins, wonderful walks and delightful views all go to make Netley a gem on the south coast.

It's one of those songs that gets me up and dancing whenever I hear it. Of course, a high pitched voice helps when singing this one!

Saturday Night Fever starring John Travolta, is one of my favourite films ever. This iconic track just sums up the era of the 70's perfectly.

The New Forest

The New Forest is an area of natural beauty and I was lucky enough to grow up within a stone's throw of it. I remember many a happy day spent driving through the New Forest, finding a nice spot for a picnic or walking for miles through the countryside.

The New Forest is now a National Park. It was originally created by William The Conqueror in 1079 as a place for him to hunt deer. If my memory serves me right, the original forest had been destroyed by fire. Hence the name 'The NEW Forest'.

The New Forest runs between Southampton and Bournemouth in the south of England, with many villages in between. It's a vast area of outstanding natural beauty and is packed full of history.

The New Forest ponies roam free and can will stop the traffic as they wander into the middle of the road. Sometimes they will just stand and watch or maybe even approach your vehicle. Take care around them if you're having a picnic as they will bite and kick!

I can't think of anywhere nicer to take a venture out in the Spring time.

Je suis désolée
Lo siento
Ik ben droevig
Sono spiacente
Perdóname

I've heard it all before
I've heard it all before
I've heard it all before
I've heard it all before
[repeat]

I don't wanna hear, I don't wanna know
Please don't say you're sorry
I've heard it all before
And I can take care of myself
I don't wanna hear, I don't wanna know
Please don't say 'Forgive me'
I've seen it all before
And I can't take it anymore

You're not half the man you think you are
Save your words because you've gone too far
I've listened to your lies and all your stories (Listened to your stories)
You're not half the man you'd like to be

I don't wanna hear, I don't wanna know
Please don't say you're sorry
I've heard it all before
And I can take care of myself
I don't wanna hear, I don't wanna know
Please don't say 'Forgive me'
I've seen it all before
And I can't take it anymore

Don't explain yourself 'cause talk is cheap
There's more important things than hearing you speak
You stayed because I made it so convenient (made it so convenient)
Don't explain yourself, you'll never see

Hairspray: You Can't Stop The Beat Lyrics

TRACY
You can't stop an avalanche
As it races down the hill
You can try to stop the seasons, girl
But ya know you never will
And you can try to stop my dancin' feet
But I just cannot stand still

'Cause the world keeps spinning
'Round and 'round
And my heart's keeping time
To the speed of sound
I was lost til I heard the drums
Then I found my way

TRACY & LINK
'Cause you can't stop the beat

Ever since this old world began
A woman found out if she shook it
She could shake up a man
And so I'm gonna shake and shimmy it
The best that I can today

'Cause you can't stop
The motion of the ocean
Or the sun in the sky
You can wonder if you wanna
But I never ask why

And if you try to hold me down
I'm gonna spit in your eye and say
That you can't stop the beat!

(Penny appears onstage transformed into a hot teenage tigress.)

TRACY
What do ya' have to say, Penny?

PENNY
I am now a checkerboard chick!
You can't stop a river
As it rushes to the sea
You can try and stop the hands of time
But ya know it just can't be
And if they try to stop us, Seaweed,
I'll call the NAACP
'Cause the world keeps spinning
'Round and 'round.

SEAWEED
'Round and 'round

PENNY
And my heart's keeping time
To the speed of sound

SEAWEED
Speed of sound

PENNY
I was lost till I heard the drums
Then I found my way

PENNY & SEAWEED
'Cause you can't stop the beat

PENNY & SEAWEED, TRACY & LINK
Ever since we first saw the light
A man and woman liked to shake it
On a Saturday night
And so I'm gonna shake and shimmy it
With all my might today

'Cause you can't stop
The motion of the ocean
Or the rain from above
They can try to stop the paradise
We're dreaming of
But they cannot stop the rhythm
Of two hearts in love to stay
'Cause you can't stop the beat!

EDNA
Tracy, I have a little something
I'd like to add, if you don't mind.

You can't stop my happiness
'Cause I like the way I am
And you just can't stop my knife and fork
When I see a Christmas ham
So if you don't like the way I look
Well, I just don't give a damn!

EDNA & ENSEMBLE
'Cause the world keeps spinning
'Round and 'round
And my heart's keeping time
To the speed of sound
I was lost til I heard the drums
Then I found my way

EDNA & WILBUR & COMPANY
'Cause you can't stop the beat

Ever since this old world began
A woman found out if she shook it
She could shake up a man
And so I'm gonna shake and shimmy it
The best that I can today

'Cause you can't stop
The motion of the ocean
Or the sun in the sky
You can wonder if you wanna
But I never ask why
And if you try to hold me down
I'm gonna spit in your eye and say
That you can't stop the beat!

EDNA
Wilbur, be a dear and get me my
oxygen... NOW!

MOTORMOUTH (to Velma)
Step aside, Miss Buttercup... it's
time to wrap this mutha' up!
Oh, oh, oh,
You can't stop today

ENSEMBLE
...No!

MOTORMOUTH
As it comes speeding down the track

ENSEMBLE
Oîí îîí îîí, child, yes

MOTORMOUTH
Child, yesterday is hist'ry

ENSEMBLE
Be gone!

MOTORMOUTH
And it's never coming back

ENSEMBLE
Look ahead

MOTORMOUTH & ENSEMBLE
'Cause tomorrow is a brand new day

MOTORMOUTH
And it don't know white from black

ENSEMBLE
Yeah!

MOTORMOUTH & ENSEMBLE
'Cause the world keeps spinning
'Round and 'round
And my heart's keeping time
To the speed of sound
I was lost til I heard the drums
Then I found my way
'Cause you can't stop the beat

ALL
Ever since we first saw the light
A man and woman liked to shake it
On a Saturday night
And so I'm gonna shake and shimmy it
With all my might today

'Cause you can't stop
The motion of the ocean
Or the rain from above
They can try to stop this paradise
We're dreaming of
But you cannot stop the rhythm
Of two hearts in love to stay
You can't stop the beat!

Aah, aah, aah
Aah, aah, aah
Aah, aah, aah

Come on, you von tussles
Go on, shake your fanny muscles

VELMA & AMBER
We can't!

ALL
Yes, you can!

VELMA & AMBER
No, we can't!

ALL
Yes, you can!

VEIMA & AMBER
Yes, we can...!!!

ALL
You can't stop the beat

VELMA & AMBER
Ever since we first saw the sun
It seems von tussle girls are always
Tryin' to please someone
But now we're gonna shake and shimmy it
And have some fun
Today!

ALL
'Cause you can't stop
The motion of the ocean
Or the rain from above
They can try to stop the paradise
We're dreaming of
But you cannot stop the rhythm
Of two hearts in love to stay
'Cause you can't stop the beat!
You can't stop the beat!!

All you gotta do is reapeat after me.

Or simple as Do re mi
Sing a simple melody

ThinkFun's Rush Hour - Puzzle Fun for the Family

Oh no! The little red car (or maybe ice cream van) is stuck in a rush hour traffic jam. Think you can get him out?

I use this game all the time in my work Think Fun's Rush Hour - the junior version, that is - and it's quite a challenge. Set up the board according to pattern given on one of the 40 cards, then move the pieces one by one (obeying the traffic laws!) until the red car is able to escape the rush hour traffic jam.

Think it's just a game? It won a national award from Mensa and is even used occasionally in a variety of educational classes. There are four levels of puzzles - intermediate, advanced, expert and grand master. The easier puzzles take around 20 moves to solve while grand master can take as many as 50!

I use Rush Hour in my work with children particularly when teaching Anger management, conflict resolution, problem solving, cognitive reframing etc. The children all love this game and learn so much from it as well as having fun. I've used with children from age around 6 years right through to 14 years or so. I've also played it with my step daughters who absolutely loved it.

I've even taken it on holiday and sat and played while sunning myself on a Greek beach!

Michael Jackson: Thriller Lyrics

It's Close To Midnight And Something Evil's Lurking In The Dark
Under The Moonlight You See A Sight That Almost Stops Your Heart
You Try To Scream But Terror Takes The Sound Before You Make It
You Start To Freeze As Horror Looks You Right Between The Eyes,
You're Paralyzed

[Chorus]
'Cause This Is Thriller, Thriller Night
And No One's Gonna Save You From The Beast About
Strike
You Know It's Thriller, Thriller Night
You're Fighting For Your Life Inside A Killer, Thriller
Tonight

You Hear The Door Slam And Realize There's Nowhere Left To Run
You Feel The Cold Hand And Wonder If You'll Ever See The Sun
You Close Your Eyes And Hope That This Is Just
Imagination
But All The While You Hear The Creature Creepin' Up
Behind
You're Out Of Time

[Chorus]
'Cause This Is Thriller, Thriller Night
There Ain't No Second Chance Against The Thing With
Forty Eyes
You Know It's Thriller, Thriller Night
You're Fighting For Your Life Inside Of Killer, Thriller Tonight

[Bridge]
Night Creatures Call
And The Dead Start To Walk In Their Masquerade
There's No Escapin' The Jaws Of The Alien This Time
(They're Open Wide)
This Is The End Of Your Life

They're Out To Get You, There's Demons Closing In On Every Side
They Will Possess You Unless You Change The Number On Your Dial
Now Is The Time For You And I To Cuddle Close Together
All Thru The Night I'll Save You From The Terror On The Screen,
I'll Make You See

[Chorus]
That This Is Thriller, Thriller Night
'Cause I Can Thrill You More Than Any Ghost Would Dare To Try
Girl, This Is Thriller, Thriller Night
So Let Me Hold You Tight And Share A Killer, Diller, Chiller
Thriller Here Tonight

[Rap Performed By Vincent Price]
Darkness Falls Across The Land
The Midnite Hour Is Close At Hand
Creatures Crawl In Search Of Blood
To Terrorize Y'awl's Neighbourhood
And Whosoever Shall Be Found
Without The Soul For Getting Down
Must Stand And Face The Hounds Of Hell
And Rot Inside A Corpse's Shell
The Foulest Stench Is In The Air
The Funk Of Forty Thousand Years
And Grizzy Ghouls From Every Tomb
Are Closing In To Seal Your Doom
And Though You Fight To Stay Alive
Your Body Starts To Shiver
For No Mere Mortal Can Resist
The Evil Of The Thriller

Time goes by so slowly
Time goes by so slowly
Time goes by so slowly
Time goes by so slowly
Time goes by so slowly
Time goes by so slowly

Every little thing that you say or do
I'm hung up
I'm hung up on you
Waiting for your call
Baby night and day
I'm fed up
I'm tired of waiting on you

Time goes by so slowly for those who wait
No time to hesitate
Those who run seem to have all the fun
I'm caught up
I don't know what to do

Time goes by so slowly
Time goes by so slowly
Time goes by so slowly
I don't know what to do

Every little thing that you say or do
I'm hung up
I'm hung up on you
Waiting for your call
Baby night and day
I'm fed up
I'm tired of waiting on you

Every little thing that you say or do
I'm hung up
I'm hung up on you

Waiting for your call
Baby night and day
I'm fed up
I'm tired of waiting on you

Ring ring ring goes the telephone
The lights are on but there's no-one home
Tick tick tock it's a quarter to two
And I'm done
I'm hanging up on you

I can't keep on waiting for you
I know that you're still hesitating
Don't cry for me
'cause I'll find my way
you'll wake up one day
but it'll be too late

Every little thing that you say or do
I'm hung up
I'm hung up on you
Waiting for your call
Baby night and day
I'm fed up
I'm tired of waiting on you

Every little thing that you say or do
I'm hung up
I'm hung up on you
Waiting for your call
Baby night and day
I'm fed up
I'm tired of waiting on you

Careless Whisper is a song performed by the band Wham! in 1984. It was written by George Michael who is also part of the duo that are known as Wham! along with Andrew Ridgeley. In the 1980's, no party was held without the smooth vibes of Wham! emanating from the speakers.

The rack has been covered many. many times over the years by artists too many to mention but the original can never be bettered in my opinion.

The song evokes all kinds of romantic encounters in your mind as well as images of padded shoulders and big hair do's!

Monday Monday, by the Mamas and Papa''s is a song that brings back so many happy memories. I was still fairly young when this was a hit but hearing takes me right back to sunny days in the playground at school and listening to hits on the radio.

I frequently sing the words lyrics to songs so having them written here will hopefully help you too! I imagine that anyone learning the song will benefit from this too.

Enjoy!

Gloria Gaynor: I Will Survive Lyrics

First I was afraid
I was petrified
Kept thinking I could never live
without you by my side
But I spent so many nights
thinking how you did me wrong
I grew strong
I learned how to carry on
and so you're back
from outer space
I just walked in to find you here
with that sad look upon your face
I should have changed my stupid lock
I should have made you leave your key
If I had known for just one second
you'd be back to bother me

Go on now go walk out the door
just turn around now
'cause you're not welcome anymore
weren't you the one who tried to hurt me with goodbye
you think I'd crumble
you think I'd lay down and die
Oh no, not I
I will survive
as long as i know how to love
I know I will stay alive
I've got all my life to live
I've got all my love to give
and I'll survive
I will survive

It took all the strength I had
not to fall apart
kept trying hard to mend
the pieces of my broken heart
and I spent oh so many nights
just feeling sorry for myself
I used to cry
Now I hold my head up high
and you see me
somebody new
I'm not that chained up little person
still in love with you
and so you felt like dropping in
and just expect me to be free
now I'm saving all my loving
for someone who's loving me

(Turnaround)
Every now and then
I get a little bit lonely
and you're never coming around
(Turnaround)
Every now and then
I get a little bit tired
of listening to the sound of my tears
(Turnaround)
Every now and then
I get a little bit nervous
that the best of all the years have gone by
(Turnaround)
Every now and then
I get a little bit terrified
and then I see the look in your eyes
(Turnaround bright eyes)
Every now and then I fall apart
(Turnaround bright eyes)
Every now and then I fall apart
(Turnaround)
Every now and then I get a little
bit restless and i dream of something wild
(Turnaround)
Every now and then I get a little bit
helpless and I'm lying like a child in your arms
(Turnaround)
Every now and then I get a little bit angry
and I know I have to get out and cry
(turnaround)
I get a little bit terrified
but then I see the look in your eyes
(Turn around bright eyes)
Every now and then I fall apart
(Turn around bright eyes)
Every now and then I fall apart

And I need you now tonight
And I need you more than ever
And if you'll only hold me tight
We'll be holding on forever
And we'll only be making it right
Cause we'll never be wrong together
We can take it to the end of the line
Your love is like a shadow on me all of the time
I don't know what to do and I'm always in the dark
We're living in a powder keg and giving off sparks
I really need you tonight
Forever's gonna start tonight
Forever's gonna start tonight

Once upon a time I was falling in love
But now I'm only falling apart
There's nothing I can do
A total eclipse of the heart
Once upon a time there was light in my life
But now there's only love in the dark
Nothing I can say
A total eclipse of the heart
(repeat 2x)

Turnaround bright eyes
Turnaround bright eyes
Turnaround, every now and then I know
you'll never be the boy you always you wanted to be
Turnaround, every now and then I know
you'll always be the only boy who wanted me the way that I am
Turnaround, every now and then I know
there's no one in the universe as magical and wonderous as you
Turnaround, every now and then I know
there's nothing any better and there's nothing I just wouldn't do
Turnaround bright eyes, Every now and
then I fall apart
Turnaround bright eyes, Every now and
then I fall apart

And I need you now tonight
And I need you more than ever
And if you'll only hold me tight
We'll be holding on forever
And we'll only be making it right
Cause we'll never be wrong together

The Royal Wedding Dress chosen by Kate Middleton, was the most discussed and speculated dress for the wedding of the year. The bride chose a very sophisticated and traditional dress in ivory.

The dress was designed by Sarah Burton, of Alexander McQueen. Sarah Burton is a British designer chosen especially for this event and will be admired, copied and remembered by thousands for years to come.

The dress was a very closely guarded secret and only became fully visible as the bride stepped out of the vintage Rolls Royce Phantom V!, onto the steps of Westminster Abbey. The Queen - to - be carried a simple bouquet comprising of lily of the valley.

Catherine's marriage ceremony to Prince William, son of the Late Princess Diana, Princess of Wales and the Prince Of Wales, Charles who is the current heir to the throne of England, took place on Friday 29th April 2011.

The image of Kate's dress and the full story can be found at The Daily Mirror

Grease: You're the One That I Want Lyrics

I got chills, they're multiplyin', and I'm losin' control
Cause the power you're supplyin', it's electrifyin'

You better shape up, cause I need a man,
and my heart is set on you
You better shape up, you better understand,
to my heart I must be true
Nothing left, nothing left for me to do

Chorus:
You're the one that I want
(you are the one I want), ooh ooh ooh, honey
The one that I want (you are the one I want),
ooh ooh ooh, honey
The one that I want (you are the one I want),
ooh ooh ooh, honey
The one I need (the one I need),
oh yes indeed (yes indeed)

If you're filled with affection,
You're too shy to convey
Meditate my direction, feel your way

I better shape up,
cause you need a man
I need a man,
Who can keep me satisfied
I better shape up, if I'm gonna prove
You better prove, that my fate is justified
Are you sure?
Yes I'm sure down deep inside

[chorus repeats out]

Elton John: Rocketman Lyrics

She packed my bags last night pre-flight
Zero hour nine a.m.
And I'm gonna be high as a kite by then
I miss the earth so much I miss my wife
It's lonely out in space
On such a timeless flight

And I think it's gonna be a long long time
Till touch down brings me round again to find
I'm not the man they think I am at home
Oh no no no I'm a rocket man
Rocket man burning out his fuse up here alone

Mars ain't the kind of place to raise your kids
In fact it's cold as hell
And there's no one there to raise them if you did
And all this science I don't understand
It's just my job five days a week
A rocket man, a rocket man

And I think it's gonna be a long long time...

When Debbie Met Tony

So just how did I come to meet and fall in love with someone living across the other side of the Atlantic Ocean?

This is the story of how Debnet met Poddys Or should that be, When Debbie met Tony.

What led us to be those two people who met and fell in love?

Would things have been the same if we met years earlier?

How on earth have we maintained this relationship for two years while living 4500 miles apart?

I often ask myself the same questions.

Jackson 5: I Want You Back Lyrics

Uh-huh huh huh huh
Let me tell ya now
Uh-huh

VERSE 1:
When I had you to myself
I didn't want you around
Those pretty faces always made you stand out in a crowd
But someone picked you from the bunch
one glance was all it took
Now it's much too late for me to take a second look

CHORUS:
Oh baby give me one more chance
(show you that I love you)
Won't you please let me
(back in your heart)
Oh darlin' I was blind to let you go
(let you go baby)
But now since I see you in his arms
(I want you back)
Yes I do now
(I want you back)
Ooh ooh baby
(I want you back)
Ya ya ya ya
(I want you back)
Na na na na

VERSE 2:
Tryin' to live without your love
Is one long sleepless night
Let me show you girl
That I know wrong from right
Every street you walk on
I leave tearstains on the ground
Following the girl
I didn't even want around
Let me tell you now

CHORUS:
Oh baby all I need is one more chance
(show you that I love you)
Won't you please let me
(back to your heart)
Oh darlin' I was blind to let you go
(let you go baby)
But now since I see you in his arms

Uh-huh
A buh buh buh buh (2 times)
All I want
A buh buh buh buh
All I need
A buh buh buh buh
All I want
A buh buh buh buh
All I need

(Jermaine):
Oh just one more chance
to show you that I love you
baby! (6 times)

(I want you back)
(Jackie):
Forget what happened then
(I want you back)
(Jermaine):
Let me live again

Oh baby I was blind to let you go
But now since I see you in his arms
(I want you back)
(Jackie):
Spare me of this cause
(Jermaine):
Gimme back what I lost

Oh baby I need one more chance ha
I tell ya that I love you

Blondie: Heart of Glass Lyrics

Once I had a love and it was a gas
Soon turned out had a heart of glass
Seemed like the real thing, only to find
Mucho mistrust, love's gone behind
Once I had a love and it was divine
Soon found out I was losing my mind
It seemed like the real thing but I was so blind
Mucho mistrust, love's gone behind

In between
What I find is pleasing and I'm feeling fine
Love is so confusing there's no peace of mind
If I fear I'm losing you it's just no good
You teasing like you do

Once I had a love and it was a gas
Soon turned out had a heart of glass
Seemed like the real thing, only to find
Mucho mistrust, love's gone behind

Once I had a love and it was divine
Soon found out I was losing my mind
It seemed like the real thing but I was so blind
Mucho mistrust, love's gone behind

Lost inside
Adorable illusion and I cannot hide
I'm the one you're using, please don't push me aside
We coulda made it cruising, yeah

Yeah, riding high on love's true bluish light

Once I had a love and it was a gas
Soon turned out to be a pain in the ass
Seemed like the real thing only to find
Mucho mistrust, love's gone behind

Halloween Forgotten

The meaning of Halloween is now a million miles away from it's original roots. It's described now as an annual holiday. Why? Halloween was originally known, and in some parts of the world still is, All Hallow's Eve, Hallow E'en, Halloween, Day of the Dead and Samhain. It was a date on the calendar when The Celts believed that during this time, there was an opportunity for the spirit world to once again be in touch and interact with the living. This was cause for celebration and much joy amongst families at the time. In Ireland , the walls to burial grounds were lit with torches to help the spirits of the dead find their way along the paths back to the living.

Being a child in 60's England meant Halloween was marked by dressing up as a witch, maybe hearing some ghost stories or folktales. Occasionally someone had a party to mark the event and apple bobbing would be the highlight of the party. It was a very innocent time and certainly was not commercialised in anyway that I remember.

I grew up hearing stories about The witches of Pendlebury and also the witches of Salem. That's something I enjoy learning about. How witches were once part of everyday life. Of course, Halloween is all about Witches, Ghosts and Goulies to me! But do the younger generation know of the witches that once were part of everyday life? Do they know about the real Halloween and why it began so many centuries ago?
