30th Birthday Gift Ideas

Several people I know have turned 30 recently so I've had to give 30th birthday gift ideas some thought. Some of my favorite 30th birthday gift ideas are Book of Ages 30, Billboard Top Hits from the year they were born, or a 30th birthday t-shirt. This page has mostly inexpensive 30th birthday gifts as it does not cost a fortune to buy a thoughtful 30th birthday gift. Let me know in the guestbook below what your ideas are for 30th birthday gifts!

Do Ghosts Exist?

There's no such thing as a ghost. Or is there? Ghosts exist in popular culture and in ghost stories, but are there really disembodied spirits in cemeteries and haunted houses? There are many groups today that hunt ghosts, searching for evidence of life after death. They may take pictures in hopes of catching an orb, and record EVPs (getting a recording of a ghost's voice).

Watch TV Shows Online for free

I am tired of searching bookmarks or search engines each time I want to find a TV Network's video page. I like being able to watch TV shows online because sometimes there are two shows that I like on at the same time, then I can just watch one on the web if they put the videos of that show up after it airs.

TV photo from Wikipedia Commons which says it is in the public domain.

Penelope, Cute Modern Fairy Tale Movie!

Christina Ricci stars as Penelope in this cute fairy tale movie about a girl from a rich family line who is cursed to have a pig's nose (and ears) until one of her own kind falls in love with her. I thought this was such a cute movie and felt bad for Penelope because her family never let her go outside. When they brought in potential suitors, they would all run away at the sight of her, except for one! Even though she did look cute!

Should you use LOL if you aren't really laughing out loud?

Wikipedia defines LOL as an abbreviation for "laughing out loud" or "laugh out loud."

I came across this site called nomorelol.com that points out so many of us use the term "LOL" when we are not really laughing out loud. Should we then use the term "LOI" when we are laughing on the inside?

While nomorelol.com is pretty funny, nobody is going to stop using LOL. If someone tells you a joke, it just sounds better to say LOL. LOI is almost an insult saying your joke wasn't funny enough for me to laugh out loud.

My point is:
Don't nitpick. Who cares about the definition of LOL. It can be used when something is funny, period. If something is really funny use ROFL. Who cares if you aren't laughing out loud or rolling on the floor laughing? People will understand that better than if you use LOI.

Programming Beginner

There are some programming languages like Ruby and Python that are not too hard for beginners to learn. Of course you could dive right in to C++, but once you know one programming language it is much easier to learn a new one. A good beginner's programming book helps to learn programming fundamentals and you'll find many beginning programming books here that don't assume you know another programming language first. I will also update this page with beginning programming links and videos that I find.

Beginning Programming with the Ruby Programming Language

Ruby, an open source programming language created by Yukihiro Matsumoto, was released in 1995. It has recently become more popular with many people using Ruby on Rails to build web applications. Ruby is a great first programming language as it is very simple and easy to learn (at least for me!). You don't even have to pay a dime to get started. You can download Chris Pine's Learn to Program tutorial which has expanded into a book you could buy later. The book is pretty cheap on Amazon for a programming book.

To keep up with all the Squidoo blogs, I use Google Reader to subscribe to the rss feeds and place all the feeds in a folder called Squidoo. When I click on the Squidoo folder, I can easily find the newest Squidoo blog posts. This is a fast way of keeping up with blogs about Squidoo without having to visit each site individually.

You can win prizes just for searching the internet. I believe the most famous place to search and win is Blingo, which has a nice clean interface and returns Google results. So if you normally use Google to search anyway, you could try making some of your searches with Blingo each day, or even change your homepage to Blingo (or use the Blingo Toolbar or Quick Search) in hopes of winning a prize ranging from movie tickets and iPods to $10 Million dollars. The way to win the $10 Million Superprize from Publisher's Clearing House is to signup with Blingo, upgrade your account with your address, then search using Blingo. Your first search each day will enter you in the $10 Million drawing. For prizes other than the $10 Million Superprize, your first 25 searches each day will count. This is probably good so we don't go too crazy searching! If you don't like the prize, you can get a Visa card with money on it instead.
This page isn't official, it's just a page by a fan of Blingo, and so I may not always have the most recent info. Check Blingo's website for the current info.

Journeyman is about a guy that time travels and fix things in the past. He gets thrown into the past, and has to figure out what to do once he's there. The usual plot has him focusing on helping one person in the past. He'll go back and forth between future and various times in the past to help the person.

Maybe I just didn't notice there were other brands of bottled iced tea back then, but now it seems like there is a new kind of bottled iced tea every week! Some flavors of bottled iced tea that I love are raspberry, peach, and sometimes green tea if it actually tastes like green tea. I also like half tea and half lemonade. Lately, I have been wanting raspberry iced tea the most. A few of my favorite brands are Honest Tea, Sweet Leaf Tea, and Snapple.
Eli Stone - a good TV Show on ABC

Season 1 of Eli Stone is over. This is a show I watched every week without fail. I keep looking for news to see whether it has been renewed for a second season or if it was canceled. I hope it will be back in the fall because it was a fun show to watch.

Eli Stone is a TV show on ABC Thursdays at 9/8c. It's about a guy who is a modern day prophet, kind of. He was an "evil lawyer" who had everything until he heard the music. That music he first heard was George Michael's "Faith."

A higher power is giving Eli Visions, many filled with music, in order to help Eli help people. Sometimes Eli will do crazy things when he is having a vision, like dance around, and then everyone will think he's crazy afterward.

A question people have asked in the show is if Eli is really getting his visions from a higher power, or if the only cause is the brain aneurysm. It seems obvious to me that there is some kind of higher power helping Eli in the show because it gives Eli some pretty good hints including one that helped Eli predict an earthquake in San Francisco.

Romeo and Juliet is one of the first Shakespeare plays many people start out with. I also think it is one of the best!

On this page, you'll find helpful Romeo and Juliet links & resources to understand it. Since the copyright has expired you can read it for free on the web. You can also find a lot of help in understanding the play online. There are some good Romeo and Juliet books that are worth it as well!

Windows XP vs Windows Vista Which is the better OS: Windows XP or Windows Vista?

When I got a new PC, it had Vista on it. I want to downgrade to XP because too many things don't work right on Vista. It is slow and sometimes crashes.

I wish Microsoft would just pretend Vista never existed and go back to XP. What do you think?

Should Cookie Monster eat food besides cookies?

Should Cookie Monster eat food besides cookies?

Cookie Monster is a cookie monster, which means he eats cookies. If you introduce other food into his diet, he's not the cookie monster anymore.

There were rumors that the Cookie Monster's name was being changed to 'Veggie Monster' but snopes has set the record straight that he will remain the Cookie Monster.

BUT, Cookie Monster doesn't eat just cookies anymore. Sesame Street wants to send positive health messages to kids and eating cookies isn't exactly healthy.

Now, a Cookie is a Sometime Food. So, is he the Sometime Cookie Monster? Why is it that we could handle the Cookie Monster eating cookies before but now we can't?

My husband and I went on a kick of collecting and watching some 80s fantasy movies! Our favorite is The Princess Bride which we had both seen many times.

There were a couple I hadn't watched like Legend and Dragonslayer. He'd already seen them, but watched them again with me. I was impressed that the movies looked really good for being from the 80s!

Some of the non-Star Trek movies he's been in are: X-Men Movies: Professor Charles Xavier A Christmas Carol (1999): Scrooge Safe House: Mace Sowell Patrick Stewart also does voice acting in cartoons--including the 2007 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie.

Marina Sirtis is famous for playing Counselor Troi on Star Trek: TNG. I always liked her character because she is part Betazoid and can read minds and was always giving advice to Captain Picard. Counselor Troi was involved in a few romances on the Enterprise including First Officer William T. Riker and Worf the Klingon. In addition to Star Trek: TNG, she was also on a few episodes of Star Trek: Voyager and the Enterprise finale. Other than Star Trek, she was a voice in the cartoon Gargoyles, made an appearance in Stargate: SG1, and has an IMDB list with several other roles I am not familiar with.

Howl's Moving Castle is my favorite anime movie which happens to be by Hayao Miyazaki. Miyazaki has made many anime movies such as Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away. It is based on an interesting book of the same name by Diana Wynne Jones. It is hard to describe the story, but basically Howl is a sorceror with a moving castle who has problems and tries to avoid conflict. Sophie is a young woman who ends up getting cursed with the body of an old woman and then ends up in his moving castle with Howl thinking of her as an old woman... it sounds weird, but I really loved this movie.
Chief Joseph

Chief Joseph of the Nez Perce tribe in the Wallowa Valley had the Native American name of Thunder Rolling Down the Mountain but was called Joseph after his father. He was born in 1840 and lived at a difficult time for his tribe--his father Joseph the Elder had told him to defend his grave and not to sell their 7.7 million acres of land in three Pacific Northwest states that had been negotiated with the US Government. Chief Joseph would not sell the land, but it was taken from them as they were told they must move to a smaller reservation in Idaho. Chief Joseph had agreed to relocate to the smaller reservation because he did not want to go to war over land, but a few Nez Perce men killed white settlers over it. Joseph ended up leading his people in a great retreat toward Canada that impressed General Howard. In the end, Chief Joseph had to give up on the retreat. His words from the surrender are still remembered today: "Tell General Howard I know his heart. What he told me before, I have it in my heart. I am tired of fighting. Our chiefs are killed; Looking Glass is dead, Too-hul-hul-sote is dead. The old men are all dead. It is the young men who say yes or no. He who led on the young men is dead. It is cold, and we have no blankets; the little children are freezing to death. My people, some of them, have run away to the hills, and have no blankets, no food. No one knows where they are—perhaps freezing to death. I want to have time to look for my children, and see how many of them I can find. Maybe I shall find them among the dead. Hear me, my chiefs! I am tired; my heart is sick and sad. From where the sun now stands, I will fight no more forever."

SHAMPOO vs. CONDITIONER In the movie Billy Madison, Adam Sandler (as Billy Madison holding shampoo and conditioner bottles) debates whether shampoo or conditioner is better. It seems to me that shampoo is better because you need clean hair before you put the conditioner on. Plus, when I wash my hair sometimes I don't use or need conditioner, but I always need the shampoo.

"Shampoo is better. I go on first and clean the hair" -Billy Madison (holding a shampoo bottle)

Conditioner is better. I leave the hair silky and smoothe." -Billy Madison (holding the conditioner bottle)

I like what David Cook does with his song choices. He made 'Hello' and other songs sound better than the original to me. He's going to make the best album of any Idol ever!

David Archuleta is okay but he gets more boring to me over time. He doesn't sound bad, but I don't think I'd buy his album. Maybe he's just not my taste.

What do you think? Is David Archuleta or David Cook better?

There are other Mac games besides those that are great too, and as someone switching from PC to Mac, it is exciting to discover these games. I'll share what I find here with you. Leave a comment about games you like for the Mac.

I used to think Shakespeare was stupid, but my Grandma had recommended getting "Shakespeare's Bawdy" and other Shakespeare Books to really understand what Shakespeare was saying. I have since become a Shakespeare fan now that I know what is going on in his plays.I am compiling the good Shakespeare Links I find here, and plan to make other Squidoo lenses about individual Shakespeare plays. I have started a Romeo and Juliet Squidoo lens so far.

Leisure Suit Larry - Best PC Adventure Games Ever

Leisure Suit Larry games are fun adventure games from the 80's and 90's aimed toward adults (and you can typically play the games on a cleaner setting if you do not want all the "bad stuff.") Larry Laffer is the main character that you control and he usually has a few love interests, though they don't always work out.

Jon Bon Jovi's song "Blaze of Glory" was written for the 1990 western movie Young Guns II about Billy the Kid and some of his outlaw buddies. I really don't remember that much about the movie but could never forget the song. "Blaze of Glory" was a #1 hit and can be found on Jon's first solo album Blaze Of Glory: Songs Written And Performed By Jon Bon Jovi, Inspired By The Film Young Guns II. I first heard the song (and saw the video) on MTV and thought, wow, this is the best song ever! If you were around then you've probably heard the song and don't even need me to tell you how good it is. The album is very listenable as a whole and I also love the songs Miracle and Bang a Drum. I still listen to "Blaze of Glory" quite a bit because it's one of my most favorite songs.

Brent Spiner

Brent Spiner plays Data on Star Trek: The Next Generation. He's my favorite character on the show because he's an android, and there's a lot of subtle humor involved in his not having emotions, yet wants to fit in with humans. To that effect, he has a cat named Spot. I get excited whenever I see that he is going to be in something else other than Star trek..

I read he does not plan to play Data again. So it's sad that Star Trek XI will be Data-free.

LOST vs HEROES

LOST vs HEROES Which one is the better show?

I will have to say Lost because it keeps me totally captivated and wanting to watch more. They really get into the characters and also have one of the best ongoing stories I've ever seen on television.

Heroes is also a favorite show of mine, maybe because I really love the character Hiro Nakamura. I didn't enjoy some of the new characters and storylines they introduced in season 2. Maya and Alejandro are some of my least favorite characters to be on TV ever. I also don't like Claire's boyfriend what's-his-name. I hope that in season 3 they will pretend those characters never existed.

Anyway, I am a fan of both shows but I think Lost is the better one because it is consistently good.

IE VS FIREFOX

IE VS FIREFOX
Internet Explorer and Firefox are the 2 most popular web browsers. Which one is better?

I like Firefox because it is open source, seems more secure especially if you use the no script add-on, and has so many other cool add-ons like Scrapbook.

Internet Explorer is the most popular web browser but it is losing ground to Firefox. IE comes with Windows now so it does have an advantage of being used if it is already on the Operating System, but people are realizing there is a better browser out there and taking the time to download and install Firefox.

When I was little, I loved unicorns (and dragons, but that's another lens). I hope you'll enjoy looking at these unicorn posters! I have also included on this lens some Unicorn books and movies. My 3 favorite movies with Unicorns in them are Legend, The Last Unicorn, and The Fantastic Adventures of Unico. The good news is that Legend and The Last Unicorn are rather cheap to buy on DVD. The bad news is that the Unico movie isn't even on DVD, the VHS was $32.50+ on Amazon from third party sellers when I looked. Ouch. I bought The Last Unicorn for $9.99 when it was on sale at Target, and found Legend at one of the big chain bookstores but I don't remember how much I paid for it.

American Idol vs. Dancing With the Stars Out of American Idol and Dancing With the Stars, which is the better show?

I say American Idol. I tried watching Dancing With the Stars a few times and it was too boring for me. The judges didn't seem to have as much personality as the American Idol judges, especially Simon. Maybe I just like singing better than dancing!

What do you think?

Having a Job vs. Working for Yourself

Having a Job vs. Working for Yourself Would you rather have a job with a company or work for yourself? This is not an easy question because there are advantages and disadvantages to both.

If you have a regular job, you have a boss and company making the rules and telling you what to do, but it might not actually be as much work (depending on the job) as working for yourself. If you work full time, hopefully you have some nice health benefits. However, you could get fired or downsized, and then where would you go?

If you work for yourself, you may be your own boss but you might work longer hours and work harder than if you had a regular job, and the money may or may not be steady. You might have to work up to the point where you can work for yourself while holding a regular job.

Anyway those are just a couple things I was thinking about. I'm interested in what you have to say, so let me know below!

Dr. Horrible is my new favorite musical! It stars Neil Patrick Harris (Doogie Howser) as Dr. Horrible, your average evil scientist/super villain blogger who wants to be part of the Evil League of Evil. Nathan Fillion stars as his nemesis, Captain Hammer. It's filled with lots of humor and songs as Dr. Horrible tries to get into the Evil League of Evil and the narcissist Captain Hammer gets in his way and even woos Dr. Horrible's crush, Penny.

The best part is that Joss Whedon is the creator so you know it's good! He put it together during the writer's strike and then put it on the internet for free for a few days, but fans also bought it on iTunes as it shot up to the #1 show on iTunes.

Guitar Vader is a Japanese Indie rock band that I was introduced to on YesJapan while watching a show about Japanese topics. They have a unique sound and it really starts to grow on you after a few listens. I have since downloaded (legally) many of their mp3s and listen to them quite a bit. You can check out their YouTube videos below for an introduction to their music. The two newest Guitar Vader albums are available in the US--Dawn and Happy East. The easiest and least expensive way to get the albums is by mp3 purchase and download from a site related to YesJapan but focuses on Indie Japanese music--Japanfiles.com. Amazon has the imported Happy East cd, and their song "Satisfy" is on the cd Fresh Cuts From Japan - Volume 1, which has other Japanese Indie bands featured on Japanfiles.

There is concern about pollution in Springfield, and partly thanks to Homer it becomes the most polluted city in the world. The entire city becomes covered in a dome to control the pollution. Homer and his family are hated by the town after they find out he dumped something in the lake, and the townspeople then want to kill The Simpsons. Will the Simpsons escape the wrath of the town, and can they save the town?

New Kids on The Block vs. Hanson Which boy band of the past was better: New Kids on the Block or Hanson?

I am partial to NKOTB because they came out when I was the age that listened to boy bands. I remember having their tape and listening to it everyday.

I don't remember any band being as popular in my middle school as NKOTB! My friend had so many NKOTB posters on her wall that you couldn't even see any wall. Then one day all of a sudden, it was no longer 'cool' to like NKOTB. Who decided that!?!

Sometime after NKOTB, Hanson became popular and I kept hearing that song Mmmbop but I was too old to go crazy over Hanson. You'll have to tell me your Hanson stories if you were big fans.

Below is a friendly debate over which was the best boy band, NKOTB or Hanson. It is really just for fun to remember these boy bands and reminisce. So choose your side and tell a story or profess your love to your favorite to your favorite boy band.

In the guestbook you can talk about other boy bands you like, such as Backstreet Boys or whatever.

Is Hello Kitty For Men a Good Idea?

Silly Marketers, Hello Kitty is for Girls!

Hello Kitty is cute and a girl thing, but now they are making Hello Kitty products for men.

I sure won't stop a guy from wearing a Hello Kitty shirt but it will be pretty weird because when I was growing up Hello Kitty was a girl thing. Guys saw Hello Kitty and they walked the other way. I don't know if Hello Kitty for men has come to the US yet.

THE TAO OF PUG

The Tao of Pug is an awesome picture book! Well, it has a lot of wise words, too. The star of the story is Wilson The Pug and Pug-tzu comes along and teaches him a few things about life.

You can learn a lot from a pug! This is one of my favorite books even though it's heavy on pictures because it is also heavy on Taoist, I mean pugist wisdom. Plus, who doesn't love a cute pug?

Is the Juno the best movie of the year?

Is the movie Juno the best movie of the year? I watched the DVD and thought it was okay but not that great. The DVD box quotes Roger Ebert saying Juno is "The Best Movie of the Year"

As far as Oscars go, Juno was up for Best Picture but didn't win. However, it did win an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay of 2007.

I don't care about the Oscars--I want to know what you think about Juno!

In this lens I will share what I've found in my endeavor to learn Japanese through self-study. I am not a Japanese expert, but know a thing or two that might help out someone starting to learn Japanese. It is a fun language to learn whether you're a fan of Japanese culture, jpop / music, or even anime and jdorama.

Free MP3s

Hi, I've created this page to keep track of online sites or bands that have free mp3s available. I'm only interested in legal mp3s, and as far as I know these are all legitimate sites with the most famous ones being iTunes and Amazon. Also, some of the files might not be mp3 format, like many of the free songs from iTunes. However, it's close enough for me.

Disclaimer: You should double check that it's legal for YOU to download these mp3s. These are all links to other sites I do not control so I am not responsible for anything you download.

Life or Something Like It is a good movie

Angelina Jolie stars as Lanie Kerrigan, a TV reporter in Seattle who is engaged to a Mariners baseball player, and is in the running for her dream job on AM USA. In other words, her life is going perfectly. Her boss sticks her with Pete, a camera man she can't stand, to report out in the field. She interviews a homeless guy called "Prophet Jack" who yells predictions to those who pass by. He made predictions about the score of a football game and that it will unexpectedly hail tomorrow. He surprised Lanie by a prediction that she will die next Thursday. She doesn't believe him until his other predictions come true. Then she starts to believe that she is going to die and tries to change the course of her life and find meaning.

Japanese Kimono costumes are great for those who are into Japan and Japanese culture. Halloween is a fun time to wear a kimono. If you are at the age that still trick-or-treats, perhaps you want to stand out from all the girls dressing up as Hannah Montana for Halloween? And if you don't trick-or-treat anymore, a Kimono makes for good costume as you hand out candy or go to a Halloween party.
