Hi! I am Summer Fey Foovay, also known as The Demented Pixie. I like to think of myself as a 21st century renaissance woman. That is, someone who is not restricted by our current societies concept, that you may only be competent in one area. Maaaaaaaybe two. I have a diversity of interests, talents, and abilities (as I believe we all do) and that is reflected in the ever growing variety and content of my home on the web. I am an artist, a writer, and a webdesigner. ...

Line Art on the Internet

I became involved with making free line art available on the Internet in 2005. My clipart and web graphics site, Demented Pixie’s Graphics, had generated some requests for line art that could be colored, or that would be suitable for various uses in print and design. As I am the actual scribbler who does all the artwork available there, I encourage requests. There are so many beautiful sights in the world – how would I ever decide by myself what to draw? I need you to tell me what you want!

Request your own free dog clip art

I offer free clipart for most uses (including small business websites - and other uses with permission) at Demented Pixie Graphics. My problem is that I love to draw everything, and I can never decide what to add next. So I'm going to let the community here at Squidoo do it! Not just this one time, but as an ongoing project. Below is a list of dog breeds, some that I suggested, but please do feel free to add your own suggestions and vote for the breed you'd most like to see me add to my free dog clip art website next. Whenever I am at a loss at what to add next - about once a week give or take! - I'll drop by and see which dog breed you've chosen for me to draw. I'll start a new poll, and put up a link to the page of clipart YOU chose! All of the graphics are my own original artwork – so please be patient. Feel free to request any sort of clip art that you need. I will also license for your exclusive use. The Main Demented-Pixie Graphics site Dog Clipart by Demented Pixie Graphics

So did I. Even after I became vegetarian, I wouldn't touch the stuff. I mean, really, could it look any yukkier? And that's before you get it out of the box and hold it in your hand *shudder* But I will try anything once, and I love new recipes. It took awhile, but I finally tried a few with tofu. To my surprise I found several recipes so good that my non-vegetarian friends beg me to make them and invite them over!
Epona, the horse goddess

Did you read the title? Then you have read the entire amount of information most websites and books offer on the subject! There are tantalizing mentions of Epona here and there, but very few sources offer a large body of information. With the resurgence of the old religions, there has been a corresponding surge of interest in some of our oldest, least known gods and goddesses. Sadly, due to the concentrated efforts of the earliest Christian missionaries, most records of these deities have been destroyed. From the small bits of evidence scraped together from sources as diverse as statuary, inscriptions, and linguistics, a picture of Epona is recreated.

8 People foods that are pet poisons

Almost anyone who has a pet, knows that people food is not pet food. You cannot
provide proper nutrition for your dog or cat by simply feeding them the same dinner the
rest of your family is eating. But did you know there are many people foods that we
might be tempted to give our pet as a "treat" that could be harmful to them?

I do not always agree with everything PETA does and campaigns for, although you have to admit, they do get their point across. However, this campaign - I am Not A Nugget - really touched a note with me. As many of you know, this year I raised 10 chickens myself for the first time. The idea was to have fresh eggs from chickens I knew were fed organically and who had a good life as chicken lives go. The more I have discovered over time about how chickens are treated in factory farms, be they for meat or eggs, the less I can be part of such treatment - and if you buy eggs or chicken meat you give this industry money and thus are a part of it. If they didn't make money at it, they'd quit. (hint hint hint)

Candle Magic

Probably since the first candle was lit by an early Egyptian (or Roman, depending on how picky you want to be about what makes a “candle”) candles have been a part of ritual and magic. The ancient peoples considered the flame a live entity and the light and warmth it shed energy which added to the energy of the people, or the spellcaster, to take their prayers to the rulers of the universe. Yes, I worded that bit rather carefully. For you see, candles are equally a part of Christian ritual, Pagan ritual, Buddist and Hindu meditation and many other belief systems. As a Pagan myself, I believe that the candle lends it’s own energy, the energy of the flame, the light energy, the heat energy, and increases the power of spellwork or ritual. The ritual or spell, the anointing of a candle with scented oils, the color of a candle, the chant that is spoken while I hold it in my hands and focus on my intentions all this and more direct the energy towards the purpose I have in mind. Because the candle continues to burn even when ritual or prayer is done, it serves as a reminder and a signal that I am still thinking of my purpose, even if I don’t spend all day repeating some chant or prayer! Candle magic can be very elaborate, or very simple. Candles can be the focus and main part of a spell, or a tool to reinforce other spell focuses.

Why do spells work?

I believe that spells work by focusing our subconscious mind. This is the same reason meditation works, affirmations work, positive thinking works, and prayer works. I truly believe we have unlimited power to change the world around us, to create and to destroy, to draw good events and people to us, or bad events and people. There is a spark of the power of life in everyone of us. Call it the soul, the God Force, the Goddess. Scientists cannot quantify it. Medical doctors cannot call it back once it has left this earthly body. It is what makes us what we are, it makes us alive. All “things”, people, rocks, storms, have a spark of this power, and this is why we can affect them and they affect us. We are all one. Some of us are in closer contact with that spark and wield it more effectively. We can all learn to use it. Because we are so powerful, it is our responsibility to take care with that power. Never cast a spell, no matter how good it may be, for or on another person unless they have asked you to do it for them, or if you have gotten their permission to do it for them. Before casting any sort of negative spell, such as binding or banishing, think about what you are doing very carefully. Why are you doing it? And how can you phrase it so that it is for the good of all. I had to do a banishment of a neighbor once. She was threatening me in a very real way with real harm. I conceived the belief that she was so negative because she was not happy where she was. In my spell work I focused on her leaving and going to a place where she was much happier. Through mutual friends I learned some months later that she left (and she did leave) because she had a new boyfriend, and he took her to live in a place in the country. She liked it much better, and was very happy there! And she was out of my space and no longer causing me problems! Always be careful what you ask for – for you may receive it. An acquaintance did a spell to lower her debts. Shortly after things happened that caused her to lose her home and her car and other things she was making payments on. She was out of debt, alright, but certainly not better off!

bird clipart

Back in 2000 when I first got introduced to the internet, I uploaded a few of my drawings of birds and made them available for free clipart. From that very humble beginning, I've expanded to over 1000 images of everything from angel animals to zoo animals available free at Demented-Pixie Clipart.

I only have one little problem. I can never decide what to draw next!

Last year I got involved at Squidoo. One of my first lenses asked What dog breed should I draw next?. It has been a great way to get in touch with people and find out what dogs they would like to see added to my dog clipart site. Now that I am updating and adding to the bird clipart site of course I wanted a lens to ask what kind of bird clipart people are looking for!

Living with a deaf cat

A genetic anomaly causes blue-eyed white cats to be born deaf. I have not been able to find out what percentage of them are deaf – but it is fairly common. Odd-eyed whites are often deaf on the same side as they are blue eyed! This anomaly is present in all the several breeds in which blue-eyed white cats occur, from Persian to Oriental to the lovely Turkish Van. You would not, of course, go out looking for a deaf cat to adopt, but you might find a lovely white kitten you want to take home, and discover that they are deaf. So – then what? You wonder how great a handicap it is. How difficult it might make it for you, or the cat. I usually jokingly reply to people, when they ask what it is like to have a deaf cat that she is just like all my other cats. I yell “no” and she ignores me, just like all the others do. You can read more about my Pearl at Pearlie the Psychic Kitty

The Legend of Beddgelert

The Legend King John of England made a gift to Llywelyn the Great, Prince of Gwynedd, of a magnificent hound. The Prince was a great hunter and this hound, named Gelert, soon became his favorite. One day as he set out to the hunt, the great Gelert failed to come to the houndsmans summons. He could not be found, and finally the Prince reluctantly set out without him. After a poor day’s hunting, the Prince returned. Gelert greeted him at the gate, covered in blood and gore. Following the trail of blood to the cradle where his infant son should rest, the Prince discovered an empty cradle and blood and bed clothes tossed all around. In a rage, believing Gelert had killed and eaten the child, he turned on the hound and ran him through with his sword. The hounds dying cry brought an answering cry from the disarrayed bedclothing. A frantic search revealed the heir, the infant in perfect health, beside the body of a wolf, rent to death by the fangs of Gelert. The faithful hound had killed the wolf to protect his master’s infant son. The Prince was striken with terrible remorse and buried Gelert with great honor.

Mustangs

Does anyone besides me remember the book, "Mustang" by Marguerite Henry? It was one of a number of wonderful horse books she wrote for young people – back when I was a young people. Ms. Henry also wrote "Brighty of the Grand Canyon", which was about a burro. Probably her best-known work is "Misty of Chincoteague". My personal favorite was "King of the Wind". All of them were very influential books for me. I wasn't one of those girls who went horse crazy as a teen (instead of boy crazy). Far as I can tell, I was born horse crazy and I still am. So, I remember far back enough to recall the controversy over people using airplanes to chase mustangs, gathering them up in truckloads to drag off and sell for dog food. When that was outlawed, the ranchers complained to the government that the Mustangs were eating up the range and drinking up the water they provided for their cattle. The Mustang adoption program was born – and from the very inception of it, I've dreamed of someday adopting a Mustang. As a child, I wasn't allowed to do so – I was not exactly in total control of what sort of horses I had – and had to be happy with whatever I had. And I was! Believe me. Grin. When I was older and worked with horses for a living – again, I worked with what I was paid to work with. (This is also why I've never indulged my life long love of gaited horses – I lived in Quarter Horse land) Now I find myself living in the beauty of Southern New Mexico. Wild horses run free within a day's drive of our ranch. I haven't been up to see them yet – but I will. Once some boring old practical needs are taken care of, I will be able to purchase a horse or two of our own to enjoy. Whatever I want. Mustangs or Fox Trotters – or both! So when I saw a newspaper article about a Mustang adoption event in Las Cruces, just 70 miles south, naturally we had to go. Our facilities are not quite up to the requirements for a Mustang adoption yet, nor do I have the requisite stock trailer – but I wanted to go SEEEEE…

Due to the fact that I have a website, I am Pagan, devoted to my own journey through Paganism, I occasionally get emails with various questions about Paganism. Not long ago I received an email from a young man who explained that he has become interested in Paganism as a religion for himself. He had done some reading on my website and felt drawn to my words. Thus he wrote and asked what my suggestions would be as he continues on his path. My first email said read, read, read, on the Internet and in books. Ask questions, too! I no longer have my message board because it was getting SPAMMED, but a very active, diverse, and helpful community of Pagans exists at The Cauldron, and I directed him there. I also told him to feel free to write again if he wished.

crazy old cat ladies

“Crazy Old Cat Ladies” have a long and mixed history. Women, particularly older women who have no “mate” and who have multiple cats are generally lumped together under the term. Like any group, there are the good and the bad among them, although I like to think all “crazy old cat ladies” share the common trait of a kind heart. In times past any old widow woman who fed the neighborhood strays until she had a house full of cats was generally burned at the stake as a witch. This was even more likely if she happened to have inherited property as the last surviving heir of a man – since this allowed the authorities to confiscate that property and get it back into the hands of a man - where it belonged to their way of thinking. We did stop burning people at the stake – mostly – a few hundred years ago. But we still tend to socially castigate the “crazy old lady down the street with all those cats”.

Colors and Magic

Almost every teacher of wisdom, every psychic, astrologer, or New Age philosopher, and a good many artists and fashion, and interior designers will tell you that colors have a profound effect on our moods and emotions. It is only natural that colors have the same effects on magic, rituals, and spellwork. What follows below is a table of color correspondences; the meaning of a color, the planet and elements it may be associated with, and so on. It is not meant to be either exhaustive or written in stone, but only a guideline, a place to start. Because the most important thing to listen to is your own heart, emotions, and feelings. If yellow makes you happy, then it is the natural color for happiness in your own rituals and spells. People and cultures differ in the associations they have with various colors, and you probably have some personal associations of your own as well. So go with what makes your heart feel right. The important thing when casting a spell is the spellcasters intent. You can learn more about paganism and spell work at I am Pagan. You can find Pagan ecards at Fre-ecards.com

Foxy, in Memoriam

This lens supports the ASPCA in their fight against animal cruelty. Want to help? Build a lens to support the ASPCA or visit the ASPCA home page for more information on how to pitch in. For some time about eight years ago, when I was very heavily involved in pet rescue, a friend and I were going to “dog auctions”. These are auctions held at puppy mills, I mean, "wholesale dog breeding kennels" - usually to get rid of excess breeding stock, breeds they are getting out of, un-saleable puppies (like monorchid males), and old brood bitches. Some of the kennels were horrible, and the dogs were in awful shape. At one auction, with some terribly injured and neglected dogs, we complained to the USDA inspector, who was on site. He laughed in our face, shrugged, shook his head, and turned away, saying, “I’ve seen worse.” Complaints sent to the AKC (these were, after all, registered dogs) were never acknowledged in any way. After what we saw at those auctions, it galls even worse when responsible breeders of my acquaintance were accused of being a puppy mill – breeders with champion show dogs who bred one litter a year – the puppies reserved before they were even born. Most of the people who yammer about puppy mills have no idea what they are talking about. Which is too bad, because puppy mills are horrible places and they do need to be put out of business. However, not every dog breeder is a puppy mill. People with three or four dogs who breed a litter or two a year, are not a puppy mill. People who own 300 or 400 dogs and don't even know their names but have big tags with numbers on their collars, who just sling a few pounds of the cheapest possible dog food into the kennels once a day and provide no other care, no affection, no attention other than the bare necessities, who breed a bitch on every single heat, whatever her age or condition - these are puppy mills. Which brings us to Foxy.

Love spells

I never recommend love spells. You are interfering with the free will of another person. This is never right. But also because the consequences of love spells are often dire and unpleasant. At the very least, even if it works, there will come a time when you are just as unhappy being with that person, as you think you are being without them. You know, even if they don’t, that you did not earn their love or receive it as a gift. Therefore you will always be insecure in that love. Or you will come to detest that person, and yourself, because deep down (even if they have come to truly love you) you think you tricked them into loving you – and they don’t really love you. Once again, you will be unhappy. And before you think I am being all holier than thou, let me just tell you that part of the reason I feel so strongly, is because I did a love spell once. And I got what I asked for, and deserved. It was not pretty, in the end. Rather than a love spell, consider a spell for yourself, to help you learn to love yourself. The truth is, until you truly love yourself, you will not allow anyone else to love you. Even if they do love you, you will end up pushing them away, one way or another, because you believe you are not loveable. Learn to love and accept yourself, and love will come to you For more about paganism Visit my site

Wagonhound Ranch - holistic ranching

Two of the most influential men in my childhood were ranchers. My love for horses led me to people who had a love for ranching, for the land, for the western lifestyle. I was very lucky that the older woman who became my mentor in my twenties was also tied to the land and animal husbandry. So where does this fit in with later decades when I became vegetarian, and an advocate for animal rights and wildlife? In my heart, there has been no change. There is some personal conflict, of course. But I have always believed that smart, wise, caring people can find ways to reconcile these differences into a whole (holistic) life. Today I read about such a person in the April Western Horseman, and the ranch they have created.

Artist, Magician, Philosopher, …Machinist, Mechanic?

Most of what I know of “Doc” Dick Brown is from one of his sons, who is a dear friend of mine, who has shared his memories, and the information he has provided me for the making of a website to sell Doc's sizeable inventory of vintage british motorcycle parts. What is abundantly clear, is that Doc was far more than just a mechanic. But I knew that already. I pulled my clanking, clattering, shuddering little Volkswagen into his shop one afternoon, for his tender ministrations.

Sierra County, New Mexico

In 2006 I went on the road and landed in Sierra County, New Mexico. Although I've been here an entire year I haven't begun to exhaust all the wonderful things to explore in this "enchanting" part of the Southwest. No matter what you enjoy, you are bound to find something here you will love. The landscape, the weather, the outdoor recreation, the art and artists, the events, the food - I could go on and on. And I do. So I have created this lens to be a central index for all the many lenses I am going to inflict upon Squidoo about my beloved Sierra County, New Mexico.

Molly Pitcher - Revolutionary War Heroine

"Molly Pitcher" was a nickname given by Revolutionary War soldiers to the women, often wives of the soldiers or camp followers, who brought water to hot and thirsty artillerymen during battle. The water was by some accounts for drinking, by others for swabbing the guns - and probably used for both.

However, the name "Molly Pitcher" is most commonly associated with Mary Ludwig Hays McCauly of Carlisle, PA - where she is well remembered by her contemporaries and family.

What is the best community/networking group on the Internet?

At this time, mid-2007, Myspace.com is the largest community networking site on the Internet. It is also continuously the #1 search term, followed closely by terms like Myspace layouts. If you are looking for friends, lovers, or people in your area, it might be the best overall site. Myspace is especially famous for being the home page for many bands and musicians, who share their music and videos for your own myspace page. However, it has also been "invaded" by many businesses, some of which will spam you unmercifully with fake messages about "what a great loan I just got" or "these pills really work". If you are looking for online exposure for your work, I don't think it is a very good venue. The good points would be it is free, it is easy to set up your page, and easy for people to add you as a "friend" and so keep up on your updates. My Myspace page does not show up if you Google my name. To me, there are Myspace people, and LiveJournal people. LiveJournal began as a community which you had to be invited to. It is now an open community. LiveJournal, like Myspace, is free, however a paid membership offers some perks. There are no business journals, and many very interesting communities. In general, I would say LiveJournal people tend to be a little older, and a little more likely to be professional, or creative people. It is not the place to get exposure for your work, although the friends you make there are very likely to visit your web links, auctions and so on. Googling for my name does not bring up my LiveJournal, but I want it that way. To me – it is the "private space" (as much as any space you have online will be private).

The Trickster

The trickster, or prankster, as a character, has had a special place in human society since humans gathered in small family groups in a cave for the first time.

Tricksters can be an individual, a spirit or magical creature, or even a God or Goddess.

Pranksters can be grouped into two very general categories; spirits, magical beings, Gods and Goddesses who play tricks on unsuspecting mortals, and mortals who use their wits and unconventional thinking rather than conformity and muscle to succeed.

Pause and Reconnect

This week has been really busy with first one thing and then another. My mind has been awhirl with some "high level job negotiations" and a large purchase we contracted to make that will require the sale of another asset and so on and so on. To complicate matters, I was called in to replace another person who unexpectedly quit when I had personal plans for other uses of my time. Meanwhile, somewhere in there, I had a birthday. It was a good day, but brought it's own serious of complications. All things considered, I had a shortage of time to relax at our ranch. Yesterday evening, I finally got to "sneak off" with a tall, cold glass of water and sit down outside. At first, my mind was still buzzing along with this and that and plans and ideas and-and-and- but as I sat there the jackrabbits began to come to water in our little reflection pool.

Pets as Christmas gifts

In general, pets as Christmas presents are a very bad idea. Both for the pet, and for the person receiving the pet. Adopting an animal into the family is very much like having a child. You would not just hand someone a baby for Christmas!

invasion of the giant snakes

Sounds like yet another awful B horror movie doesn't it? In this case - it really is an invasion - and it isn't the first one!

The beautiful Florida Everglades seems to be the beachhead of choice for the invasion of exotic species. They don't come in on spaceships, or mutate from radioactive waste though. Humans are the culprit here.

Humans have a tendency to buy a pet they think will be "really cool" without thoroughly examining the consequences. Like the eventual size and ferocity of the animal in question.

A Demented Pixie on books

My nickname and my domain name is Demented Pixie. Maybe because I am just a smallish woman - or maybe because I play pixies in rpg, or maybe because I'm crazy. Anyway - A Demented Pixie on books is the section of my website devoted to my book reviews. I love to read. At any given time I have three or four or more books going. Science fiction, mysteries, true crime, non-fiction, biographies, philosophy, mysticism, self-improvement, there really is no limit to what I'll pick up and read! If you love books, too, please drop by and visit the site sometime. I don't review nearly all the books I read - just the best. And occasionally the worst. And the most important. I've shared a few condensed reviews below, just to give you a taste. See you there!

2007 Hatch Chile Festival

Anywhere in this area of New Mexico, say “Hatch Chiles” and people know just what you are talking about. Restaurants brag that they use only Hatch chiles. You can buy all sorts of Hatch Chile sauces and salsas, and even the chile’s themselves at the local stores. Roasted Hatch Chile’s can be purchased at roadside stands. Hatch chiles are reputed to be the best, and the hottest chiles in the world. They certainly are delicious.
